Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Nutrition provides readers with a preparatory look at the exciting field of sport and exercise nutrition, including its foundational concepts and the diverse career options available. With this one-stop resource, students thinking of entering the field, athletes, and those working with athletes will gain a basic understanding of how nutrition affects sport performance and exercise training. They will also see how this knowledge is put to work in today's sport environment.

The text provides an overview of the field without getting into the more complicated, scientific details. It blends current and evidence-based information and the application of that information to athletes in various sports. The goal of the book is not only to cover the basics of sport and fitness nutrition but to inspire readers to continue their exploration of the topic.

Chapters 1 and 2 define the field of sport and exercise nutrition, the kinds of jobs available, and the education necessary for those jobs. Chapters 3 to 8 cover the essential nutrients of sport and exercise nutrition (carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and balance of water, electrolytes, and fluid) as well as energy balance and imbalance. The remaining chapters cover body weight and body composition, unhealthy eating practices, and the future of sport and exercise nutrition. Because sport nutrition is a young scientific field, the information can sometimes appear to be confusing, contradictory, incomplete, and even unknown. With this text, readers will get the most up-to-date answers to common questions on weight loss, supplements, sport drinks, and other popular issues.

Each chapter of the text summarizes the latest scientific literature and then translates that information into practices that can be used by athletes, coaches, trainers, physicians, and other professionals. Throughout the book are many features that enhance the learning experience and show readers how sport nutrition is used in today's world:

• Numerous boxes highlight interesting topics, myths, and popular beliefs.

• Success Stories showcase individuals who have been successful in the field, how they got to where they are, and how they spend a typical day.

• Sidebars draw attention to interesting trivia and debatable topics.

• An appendix explores how other professions might use sport and exercise nutrition in their work.

Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Nutrition is the second book in Human Kinetics' Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Science series. The series helps students and professionals understand the basic topics, goals, and applications of the many subdisciplines in kinesiology. This and other books in the series provide a solid grounding that readers can use as a jumping-off point for further study.

Very practical and written in an easy-to-read style. We've done local cruising, but I wasn't sure what I should be concerned about for our upcoming cruise to the Caribbean in '01 or '02. I now know what classes I personally need to attend, that my time at the gym is a good investment in my safety, I don't need to know how to tie every blasted knot known to mankind, windvanes are worth looking at, what goodies to put on my Christmas and birthday list(!),what to bring for sail repair, medicine, etc. Since I'm usually in charge of food for short cruises, Anna Gleckler's notes on preserving cheese, bread, juice and eggs without refrigeration AND making jerky and corning beef were, well, things my mother didn't teach me and I probably wouldn't have thought to ever ask her! I just feel more at ease and I anticipate that in the next year or so that I will be better prepared if I act on the advice in this book. I plan to re-read it every six months or so to make sure I'm working on those things (health, reading, education) to make our trip the best it can be.

Live to Ride: The Rumbling, Roaring World of Speed, Escape, and Adventure on Two Wheels
Average Reviews:

A good read for every motorcycle enthusiast, BUT the author is a bit of a brand snob. He disses early Honda Gold Wings as not having "soul", and dismisses the Honda Magna as being "ugly", while constantly fawning over overpriced and ugly Ducatis. If "soul" means having to tighten bolts down after every ride, rebuilding it every winter, or fabricating your own parts, I want nothing to do with that kind of "soul". Yet another Ducati snob I fear. The Honda Magna was one of the fastest bikes of it's time[...]
And the Gold Wings have been marvels of engineering since day 1, I own an 83 naked Gold Wing with so many miles I've lost count as the odometer doesn't work anymore and that will still pull away from most Harleys(excepting the VRod) at the flick of the throttle. Still a good read however!

Live Bait Fishing: Including Doughbait & Scent (The Freshwater Angler) Review

Live Bait Fishing: Including Doughbait and Scent (The Freshwater Angler)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife bought me this book for Christmas, and it helps to reaffirm what I have believed for years: Live bait will always, ALWAYS, outfish artificial lures. If you have a jig that isn't drawing attention, hook a minnow, mealworm, or nightcrawler on it, and the results will probably change quickly. This book goes into a lot of the water temperatures and conditions to take into consideration when using live bait, but I have come to believe, at least in the southern US, there is no time when live bait isn't effective. This book will convince you of the same thing. It's an easy read with lots of pictures, and the print is plenty big enough. Excellent book for beginners, veterans, or live bait doubters.

Every kid who ever started fishing probably tried to catch a panfish with a worm. That setup has been the tried-and-true method for generations. There are other kinds of live bait that work just as well; maybe even better in some conditions and for certain fish. In addition to the chapter on Worms & Leeches, this book covers Baitfish, Insects, Salamanders & Frogs, Crustaceans and Other Natural Baits (such as salmon eggs and clams). Complete information on how to catch and keep these baits is followed by sections on how to actually use each live bait type. New on the freshwater-fishing scene in recent years is the use of dough baits and scents. Which one to choose, plus how and when to use each is fully explained. Equipment is discussed in detail: hooks, bobbers, sinkers, rods, and reels. The authors suggest many tips for using different kinds of equipment in various fishing locations and situations. The final chapter matches common freshwater fish species with the best kind of live bait to use, depending on where the fish are and what time of year it is.

I have been waiting for this book for awhile and might have had my hopes a little too high...and full disclosure I am a lifelong SC and Seahawks fan...this book is an easy read and was very motivating...I am constantly reading these types of books and I always keep a hi-lighter, notepad, and pen nearby and this book gave me all kinds of nuggets...my rating however was lowered from a four to a three star (i rarely will hand out a five) because of the simple fact that Pete doesn't coach the reader on how to map-out and plan their own philosophy...I love Pete...his energy, his mannerisms, and his coaching style and I have kept a lot of articles about him over the years because he always gives the reader/listener some great motivating ideas and tools and i love having those as a reference...this book offers the same however, I bought it to help me shape and actually create my own philosophy for business/coaching and the book left me a bit disappointed with no chapter on creating and formalizing my own philosophy...again, motivating book...some great ideas and quotes, however, it left me wanting just a bit more...on a side note...I hope Amazon pulls down all the reviews on here that are just posted to trash Pete Carroll...I buy quite often from Amazon and use these reviews to help me decide on my purchases...obviously those of you "reviewing" have issue with Pete so here is a suggestion - start a blog and share your opinions on there as much as you would like, but don't affect the rating integrity of Amazon...

The Game of Our Lives Review

The Game of Our Lives

Despite being written in the early 80s, The Game of Our Lives is still a fascinating, and relevant, book about a season in the NHL. As a young kid at the time, I followed Gretzky and the Oilers as much as one could growing up in central Pennsylvania. But this is a hockey book for all hockey fans; not just a story about the pre-championship Oilers, but an engaging insight into the history of the Canadian game. I highly recommend it.

In this best-selling timeless classic, Peter Gzowski recounts the 1980-81 season he spent travelling around the NHL circuit with the upstart Edmonton Oilers. These were the days when the team was on the edge of greatness and about to take it all and become the hockey dynasty of the '80s. It's amazing to look back at 1980-81 and consider that some of the game's greatest players came together on a young team and quickly blazed their way into the record books and the consciousness of a nation. This is also a book about hockey's magnificent history, about Morenz, Richard, Howe, Orr, Hull . the men whose rare and indefinable genius on the ice exemplified the speed, grit, and innovation of the game. The Game of Our Lives is unlike any book ever written in the annals of hockey. It weaves together the elements of the game, both past and present, and presents an intelligent and moving account of why hockey means so much to so many.

I am not usually a reader, but I had a hard time putting this book down. Swidey does an excellent job capturing what has been an incredible story in Boston over the past few years. It's about basketball but, it is also about so much more. He describes how the aftermath of school desgregation in Boston has left the public schools in crisis, and how having someone who cares can make such a huge diffrence.

Branch Rickey (Penguin Lives) Review

Branch Rickey (Penguin Lives)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The wonderful "Penguin Lives" series has hit another home run with Breslin's insightful, entertaining and revealing treatment of the man who, as GM of the Brooklyn Dodgers in the late 1940's, had the courage and foresight to facilitate Jackie Robinson's extraordinary breaking of the sport's color bar.
These "Lives" books are not meant to be exhaustive biographies. Generally, there are no indices, source notes. Rather, the author provides a quite selective bibliography for readers wanting fuller treatment. The mission of the "Lives" books, rather, is to sketch the full life, and home in on significant, inspiring acts of the subject that truly made a positive difference in the world. The several I have read, including this one, have the sense of a masterful story-teller chatting knowingly with me across a kitchen table.
Enter Breslin, an icon himself, who for more than 55 years has moved us to tears and laughter and greater understanding. His selection to treat Rickey really is "beautiful." By story's end, Penguin's choice of Rickey as the inaugural sports figure in the series--ahead of Robinson, Ruth, Thorpe--also seems totally appropriate. As Breslin shows, without Rickey doggedly pursuing his vision of integration against many foes, a decade (or more) might have passed unchanged.
What led Rickey to dissent from all 15 other baseball owners (Breslin provides their ridiculously pious and hypocritical "Statement on Race") and dedicate himself and his team to integration? Breslin reveals Rickey as a dedicated Methodist, a proponent of fairness for all, with an eye for talent (he champions a lanky young freshman named George Sisler; years later, Rickey and super scout Clyde Sukeforth seize on Robinson, but only after subjecting him to a four-hour grilling, "Will you have the guts to turn away?"; the recounting of that meeting is riveting). As do a number of others in the Penguin series, Rickey radiates as a true visionary. Not only was breaking the color bar the right thing to do morally; it also was great business. Rickey's every act in that direction was purposeful, as Breslin shows us a man who never relied on luck. "Luck," Rickey said, "is the residue of design."
So before Robinson could take the field in a Dodgers uniform and triumph over so much hostility, Rickey carefully built a new infrastructure. He steadfastly courted politicians to pass first a fair employment law and then to mobilize their constituencies; he spoke to African-American groups; he courageously ignored the racist sports writers of the time; he reasoned with some of his own racist players. "Proximity" was part of his vision for success--by being proximate to a player of Robinson's immense talent and focus, the rightness of integration would manifest itself. He was in his late 60's by then, had a long and successful career in baseball, but was determined to make this happen. And in Robinson he had a great chance.
With his unique style, wry humor and grace, gift for incisive anecdotes and riffs, and flair for embellishing dialogue without taking undue liberties, Breslin succeeds in letting his remarkable subject's life achievement show and tell itself. In so doing, Breslin's gem takes a rightful place among Penguin's other lives who really mattered.

Sports Junkies Rejoice: The Birth of ESPN

"Sports Junkies Rejoice! The Birth of ESPN" is the definitive insider's account of the origin of the Worldwide Leader in Sports. As someone who was 17 years old when ESPN first went on the air on September 7, 1979, my sports life (and in many ways, my professional career) has been personally impacted by Bill Rasmussen's creation. His book reveals what the situation was with television in the late 1970s, his career up to that point in sports, the entrepreneurial leap of faith he made when his career with the New England Whalers was suddenly over, and how he, his son Scott, and a small band of believers got ESPN on the air for the very first time. If you are a sports fan, and you are old enough to remember a time before ESPN, this story will amaze you. Rasmussen's audacity, enthusiasm, and persistence carried the day, and it's not only an inspiration to sports fans but to small business owners and entrepreneurs of any stripe. If you are a sports fan but have no recollection of any time before ESPN, then prepare to be shocked at a world with no cable TV, no CNN, no MTV, only a few select sports broadcast on three major broadcast networks before Rasmussen and his small band of pioneers forged a new way of looking at sports on TV. The new paperback edition, published in the summer of 2010, contains some updates to Rasmussen's story and new comparisons of ESPN then and now. I've read it several times now, given it as a gift to others, and highly recommend it to anyone who loves sports, loves ESPN, and wants to know what really happened."

Do you know about the $9,000 credit card advance, the first advertiser on ESPN, or the cost of ESPN's first satellite transponder? Or why ESPN is based in Bristol, Connecticut? All that and more about the early days is covered by Bill Rasmussen in "Sports Junkies Rejoice! The Birth of ESPN."

Rules of the Game: The Best Sports Writing from Harper's Magazine (American Retrospective Series)
Average Reviews:

If you are a sports fan with literary inclinations, this book will satisfy your yearnings to read about sports and to be edified by good writing. The essays cover everything from baseball, to boxing, to tennis and the Olympics. Coming from Harper's, the expectation were high and all but one of the essays did not disappoint. Authors included are Pete Axthelm, George Plimpton, Tom Wolfe and Wilfrid Sheed, names from the world of writing with whom I was familiar. I was happily introduced to other writers whose works, based on my dipping into their writing in this volume, I am now eager to more thoroughly dive into - Rich Cohen, John Chamberlain and Guy Lawson, for example. The essays are all rich in their portrayals of times and people, like the treatments of Muhammad Ali and his charismatic personality, or the descriptions and insights about places like Flin Flon, Manitoba, where hockey is not just a way of life, but life itself, or the ineptitude of the Chicago Cubs and the attachment of their fans to that ineptitude, or Jim Bouton's struggle to save a minor league ballpark from the misguided and politically driven efforts to build a new stadium in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This book leaves the reader with that inimitable feeling one gets when completing a good book - that you have entered worlds previously inaccessible and unimaginable and have become intimately entangled in them; that you have become privy to insights and observations that absolutely and correctly categorize and capture a phenomenon; that you are somehow a littler richer, a little more knowledgable and perhaps even a little wiser than before you turned the first page. Read it and enjoy.

Body Mind Mastery: Training For Sport and Life Review

Body Mind Mastery: Training For Sport and Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book has 166 pages of content and can be divided into three main parts. The first part is fairly abstract, Millman calls it "Understanding the Larger Game". The first chapter is about natural laws that Millman sees as being helpful to understand; the next has to do with bringing awareness to our activities as a way to see what we are doing wrong, what we are doing right, and then learning from our mistakes; last chapter of part 1 is about preparation, about slow and steady progress. Personally, having read alot of self help and mind body I didn't really find this first part very helpful. The second part and the first chapter of the third part are, to me, the meat and bones of the book, where the concrete content is. He has chapters on Mental, Emotional, and Physical talent and how to cultivate all three. He talks about the self concept, fear of failure, about breathing, and then about strength, suppleness, stamina, and sensitivity. Then there is a chapter with specific advice for working on skills, like hitting a golf ball or diving or gymnastics. The third part of the book criticizes the focus on results and urges more focus on focus, concentration and personal growth and the last chapter is about new sports, less competitive, that Millman sees developing in the future. Again, this part is more abstract and it is very normative, criticizing competition, though he does recognize that it can bring out the best in people, and then naming some new sports he sees as good developments. He also suggests requiring athletes in asymettrical sports such as golf, tennis, bowling and baseball to "use both arms equally" (pg 143). I found that a little annoying and I also didn't really see it as having a place in this book. Overall, there are a bunch of good points in here, it is clear that Millman understands how to pursue excellence and growth, but I felt the book was a bit unfocused and there was nothing really new for someone who has done some reading in this area. Understanding Sports Massage - 2nd Edition Review

Understanding Sports Massage - 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a well written, well organized, attractively designed and comprehensive book on using massage to improve athletic performance. Although it is written for use by sports massage specialists, it is also useful for athletes and coaches. As an amateur athlete and martial arts instructor, it helped me understand when and how to use massage before and after athletic events, and what benefits to realistically expect; when it is not advised; and how to do simple self-massage or partner massage. Fascinating snippets about the history of massage in sports liven it up.
The new, second edition is better organized than the original. It uses photographs instead of drawings to better illustrate massage techniques, includes many new charts and figures, and updated research on the benefits of sports massage. Learning outcomes and study questions for each chapter have been added. Lists of figures, tables, and history briefs make it easier to quickly find information, and the entire book has a more attractive design.

Updated and invigorated, Understanding Sports Massage, Second Edition, provides readers with an understanding of the fundamental theory and practical basis for using sports massage to keep athletes in top shape, recover from injuries, and improve performance. Like the successful first edition, Understanding Sports Massage is ideal for sport professionals and students in sports massage training programs. The book illustrates and explains massage techniques in detail and describes the procedures involved in conducting effective sports massage sessions, including determining goals, organizing the session, and choosing and applying techniques.

In addition to serving sport professionals, the new edition of Understanding Sports Massage will be useful to coaches, athletes, and teachers. They will be introduced to massage techniques that they can learn and apply in nonmedical situations such as in warm-ups, preparing for and recovering from competition, reducing the potential for injuries, and aiding in injury rehabilitation.

Understanding Sports Massage, Second Edition, also features many updates and improvements from the first edition:-Nearly 100 photographs demonstrate proper technique.

-New two-color presentation highlights specific elements of the photos and text for a clearer understanding of the techniques presented.

-Updated and expanded material throughout the book includes new sections on medications and massage, specialized massage techniques, and joint movements and stretching; an updated trouble spots form; more examples of remedial and rehabilitation applications; and a description of the increasing use of sports massage in integrative sports medicine settings. This text helps readers put theory into practice, first explaining the scientific underpinnings of sports massage and then describing in detail how to apply those concepts in a massage session.

This "how-to" approach extends to its planning and programming sections, in which the authors lay out the finer points of giving sports massage and then guide readers in implementing sports massage programs in various settings. The program-development portion of this book provides practitioners with detailed advice from the authors, who are well respected for their expertise and program-development skills. They address how to implement sports massage programs in various settings and how sports massage specialists cooperate with other sport and health professionals to provide the best possible care for athletes.

The result is a comprehensive and richly detailed guide to providing the best sports massage in a variety of settings and to developing a top-notch sports massage program in a school or university, a health club or organization, or a clinic or private practice.

Campy: The Two Lives of Roy Campanella Review

Campy: The Two Lives of Roy Campanella
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Author Neil Lanctot has thoroughly researched this new book on former Brooklyn Dodgers' catcher Roy Campanella. Wherever possible the author interviewed former players such as Carl Erskine, Rocky Bridges, Bobby Bragan, Gene Hermanski, Monte Irvin, Andy Pafko, and several others. Teammates such as Clem Labine, Preacher Roe, and Johnny Podres died before he was able to conduct an interview. Other Dodger stalwarts passed on much prior to this time. Writers such as Roger Kahn, Stan Isaacs, and Rachel Robinson (widow of Jackie) were also interviewed. One well-known teammate chose not to be interviewed because he had been misquoted too often in the past while the son of another former Dodger said his father now charges $5,000 an hour to be interviewed.
Roy began his professional career with the Washington Elite Giants in 1937 and then continued on with the team when they moved to Baltimore the following year. Campy was blessed to have a wonderful mentor in Biz Mackey who provided him with the encouragement he needed. Later on Roy credited catcher Mike Sandlock, who later went on to play for the Philadelphia Phillies, for teaching him the finer points of catching. Sandlock had a nondescript major league career, but he left his mark on Campanella.
After spending time at both Nashua, New Hampshire, and Montreal in the Dodgers' minor league system Author Lanctot provides considerable detail regarding Campanella's career with the Dodgers. Campy won the National League's MVP award in the alternate years of 1951, 1953, and 1955. After suffering through a tough season in 1954 due to a hand injury he came back with a strong year again in 1955 while many thought Duke Snider should have won the award instead. Campy rejoiced in winning the 1955 MVP award knowing that his hand had healed and he felt more good years were to follow. We can't help but wonder if Campanella's presence in the lineup of the third game of the 1951 playoff game with the New York Giants would have had a different outcome had Roy been able to be in the lineup. As it was he was out with a leg injury, and replaced by Rube Walker.
The author enlightens us regarding the frosty relationship between Roy and Jackie Robinson which soured during a barnstorming tour due to unequal distribution of pay for each member. Robinson also wanted Campanella to take a more active part in fighting for equal rights for Negro players in hotels and restaurants which the ball club patronized while Campy expressed a thankful attitude for what he had rather than what he was denied. Their relationship was patched up in later years with Campanella taking a more active part in championing civil rights.
Campanella's career came to a sudden and violent end in January of 1958 when his rented car skidded on ice and slammed into a telephone pole and left him paralyzed. I remember the headline in The Sporting News which read "Swerve on A Curve: Player and Car Crashed." If Roy had been driving his own car with snow tires perhaps things may have turned out differently. It was quite an adjustment for this athletic catcher to now depend on others to attend to his basic needs. Author Lanctot states that Roy spent a long day working at his Harlem liquor store, followed by a visit to his mistress prior to going home. Being overly tired or having fallen asleep at the wheel the remainder of Roy's life changed in an instant. Roy's marriage to his second wife Ruth had already deteriorated with both individuals to blame. The book and movie version of "It's Good to be Alive" focus on Ruth's negative behavior, but Roy had his faults as well. The author explains in quite some detail the difficulties Roy experienced in his post-baseball life bound to his wheelchair.
You will find details regarding Roy's life not found in other publications regarding the storied Boys of Summer. Author Lanctot did his homework on this book, and it would be a worthy addition to any baseball fan's library.

Bear's Boys: Thirty-Six Men Whose Lives Were Changed by Coach Paul Bryant Review

Bear's Boys: Thirty-Six Men Whose Lives Were Changed by Coach Paul Bryant

As an Alabama graduate (c76) and having grown up an avid fan, I was excited to see that this book was in print. However, there is a sameness to all the articles that reinforce want a great person Coach Bryant was, how everyone was afraid of him, how their lives were impacted, and how bad they felt when he died. Hey, Maybe it would have been nice to actually get a little more indepth with the story line.
The weak writing was surpassed by the incredible lack of proofing of the photographs that were included. In many instances, the particular player being described in a photo was actually cut out of the picture. I think Eli Gold owed us more than this weak rehash of a great subject.
End result...many, including this reviewer, will purchase the book for the subject matter...too bad it lacked in quantity and quality photography. Apologies to Coach Bryant!!!!! Roll Tide

Bear's Boys is a collection of inspiring stories featuring 36 men whose lives were altered by their encounter with the legendary coach while they were players and coaches at Alabama. The stories of star players such as Joe Namath, Ken Stabler, Marty Lyons, Bob Baumhower, Ozzie Newsome, and Gene Stallings show how the Coach forever changed them as young men and ball players on the field and later in life after football.

When Bob Baumhower was released from the Dolphins in 1986, he immediately did what Coach Bryant would have done: he made a plan. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he snapped into practical mode. First, he sold his boat and his big house. Then, he systematically began exploring business opportunities and setting goals for the next several decades of his life. When he started his first restaurant, he knew he had yet another chance to apply the principles he learned on the football field in real life. "Coach Bryant said there's a lot of blood, sweat and guts between dreams and success," Baumhower said. "That's true in the restaurant business. . . . Today, every success I have, every win that I have, in my opinion, came from the fact that Coach Bryant cared enough to talk to me and turn the light on for me

While some Latin American superstars have overcome discrimination tostrike gold in baseball's big leagues, thousands more Latin American players nevermake it to "The Show." Stealing Lives focuses on the plight of one Venezuelanteenager and documents abuses that take place against Latin children and young menas baseball becomes a global business. The authors reveal that in their efforts tosecure cheap labor, Major League teams often violate the basic human rights ofchildren. As a young boy growing up in Venezuela, Alexis Quirozdreamed of playing in the Major Leagues. Alexis's dreams were like those ofthousands of other boys in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, and Major Leagueteams encouraged such dreams by recruiting Latin children as young as 10 and 11years old. Determined to become a big league player, Alexis finished high schoolearly and dedicated himself to landing a contract with a Major League team. Alexissigned with the Chicago Cubs in 1995 at age 17 and then began a harrowing ordeal ofexploitation, mistreatment, and disrespect at the hands of the Chicago Cubs, including playing for the Cubs' Dominican Summer League team in appalling livingconditions. Alexis's baseball career came to an abrupt end by an injury for whichthe Cubs provided no adequate medical treatment. The story continues, however, withAlexis's pursuit of justice in the United States to ensure that other Venezuelan andDominican boys do not encounter similar experiences. What happenedto Alexis is not an isolated case-Major League teams routinely deny Latin childrenand young men the basic protections that their U.S. counterparts take for granted. This exploitation violates international legal standards on labor standards and thehuman rights of children. Stealing Lives concludes by analyzing various reforms toredress the inequities big league baseball creates in its globalization.
