It would be difficult to be alive and even partially aware in the USA or any developed country right now and not experience how electronics and rapidly changing technology are shaping our lives. I'm one who was around when there was only radio and no TV, then black and white TV, and finally color TV, the snail-paced Commodore computers, personal Atari video games you could plug into that TV set, and then IBM computers with even 10 MB hard drives--a miracle! It has been a whirlwind of change, sometimes nearly shocking. Now with the explosion of handheld devices and the social media (Facebook, Twitter, You Tube) where's it all headed? Good question, and one that will affect us all.
This book could easily qualify as a doctoral thesis, but it is written far better than a lot of them, I'll wager. It is beautifully written, down to earth, reader-friendly for sure. Yet it is also impressively scholarly. If you would like to read about where we have been, where we are, and where we will be going with TV, handheld devices, etc.--at least the basic directions--here's your book. Filled with well-documented research and statistics, including websites to visit for more information, and the publisher's website where you can extend your reading even further, thorough chapter-by-chapter notes and a detailed index at the end, this book also includes useful lists of contents at the head of each chapter.
You get a history of electronic media overviews of radio, TV, cable, satellite, microwave, and internet. Also there is a behind-the-scenes look at broadcast media, including how advertising works. Ever wonder how ratings work? See pages 159 and following. And there is much more. The last two chapters look at the media from the viewer/user's perspective and provides guidelines for the user.
Finally there is a thoughtful look at the future and how this multitude of devices could very well be affects us soon.
This is an impressive and very well done work that is interesting, enjoyable and informative to read.
Highly recommended

This book is worth reading, mostly because there simply aren't many books about Brazilian football, & you have to know about Brazil if you really want to know about football.
Anyway, as a book about sociology of football, it is not bad. At least, there was quite a large amount of research and it showed. It just feels a bit awkward, because, despite the many years the author spent in Brazil, she wasn't born in a country which likes football. So, sometimes what she wrote sounds a bit funny.

Lever's interest in Brazilian soccer and her friendshipwith Pel led to this thoughtful, well-written account ofBrazilians' madness for spectator sports. Drawing on interviews withsoccer club directors, coaches, players, officials, sportswriters, fanclub leaders, and 200 fans, Lever gives readers a fascinating study ofpeople, culture, and politics. She reaches beyond soccer in Brazil toanalyze both the appeal and the cultural achievement of spectatorsports in all modern societies. Sports, she finds, provide an arenafor dramatizing conflicting loyalties while emphasizing the sharedinterests that make us all alike.

I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting, fun, and full of anecdotes about NASCAR. His "Big Picture" includes the 18 months he spent with my favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt. Part of the book is what we see on TV, but the better part is how NASCAR and broadcasting work behind the scenes, and what it does to family and friend relationships. A really great read. I didn't want to put it down.

Way of the Earth Review

Way of the Earth

This is an unbelievably well written (and researched) investigation into the sources and manifestations of the spirit on our earth. The similarities between cultures on different continents proves, to me at least, that there is some form of communication and thought that is tracendent, above us, or beyond our normal thinking. The book chronicles the search for truth and the meaning of life by more tribes and cultures than you probably knew existed. Particularly interesting to me were the aboriginal people of Australia, and how they were so similar to those of North and South America

Frommer's London with Kids (Frommer's With Kids) Review

Frommer's London with Kids (Frommer's With Kids)

What I like most about this guide compared to other guides, is that you can tell this is a REAL mother visiting these places with REAL children. And most importantly, she tells you about the places to avoid, as well as the best places to visit.
when you're a mom, with two little boys, it is sometimes just as important to actually know the places NOT to go - as well as the places to go.
I laughed out loud when I read her review of Hamleys. We must have been visiting there the same day! I too saw the scary santa. who looked like he would've rather been any where else than where he was. I wouldn't let my boys near him. didn't even want them to see him he looked that miserable. Shame on Hamleys to allow that.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, we went for lunch and then to the bathrooms. Where to begin? The food was deep fried and disgusting, the whole place smelled of old frying oil. It was unedible AND very expensive.
Having to change a diaper is another story. The handicapped toilet with the changing tables was dirty and the floor was wet with wet tissue all over and partially flooded. There was a line to get in as well. I had to change my baby on the floor outside the bathrooms. Everything was filthy.
I will never go back there again.
Ms Carrier was right on the money with her description of her experiences there.
So, whenever I am in London with my boys, I always read her guide - because I know she is a real mom like me. I'll go where she says is a good place to go, but I'll also avoid the places she says to avoid.
When you find another mom who's judgement you trust, it's like gold! That's how I feel about this guide.
Good advice from another mom who's been there. It's great!
Can't wait till our trip to Brittany.
Thank you Rhonda!

Authenticity: What Consumers Really Want Review

Authenticity: What Consumers Really Want

This is the latest in a series of several books (notably The Experience Economy: Work is Theater and Every Business a Stage and Markets of One: Creating Customer-Unique Value through Mass Customization) in which James H. Gilmore and B. Joseph Pine focus on what Peter Drucker once identified as one of the greatest challenges any business faces: How to get and then keep profitable customers? Their thesis in this latest volume is that marketers need to address the problem of managing "the perceptions of real or fake held by the consumer's of [an] enterprise's output - because people increasingly make purchase decisions based on how real or fake they perceive offerings. These perceptions flow directly from how well any particular offering conforms to a customer's self-image."
In this volume, Gilmore and Pine examine "the authenticity of economic offerings, not the authenticity of individuals in personal relationships, something people also greatly desire but the subject of many other tomes." They cite two exemplars in particular - Disney and Starbucks - because no company "has more affected our collective view of what is real and what is not" than has Disney. As for Starbucks, no other company "more explicitly manages its perception of authenticity, making direct appeals to authenticity in every way" Gilmore and Pine define this new discipline.
Here are some of the specific issues they address with rigor and eloquence:
1. The appeal of "real"
2. The drivers of the new consumer sensibility
3. Three axioms of authenticity
4. Five genres of authenticity
5. Two "time-honored standards" of authenticity
6. Ten elements of authenticity
7. How to be what you say you are
8. How to continue to be "true to self"
9. The nature, extent, and interaction of five key "real/fake polarities"
10. How to sustain the authenticity of what is offered
Decision-makers in any organization (regardless of its size or nature) are provided a comprehensive, cohesive, and cost-effective program by which to address and resolve these and other issues. Of course, even if Gilmore and Pine were in residence, actively involved in the design and implementation of such a program, assistance, it cannot succeed unless the given offering is and remains inherently authentic, That is, it fully meets (if not exceeds) the given consumer's perceptions of the benefits claimed for it.

Deion Sanders and the Sports Universe Review

Deion Sanders and the Sports Universe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I haven't bought this book yet, so I don't know if the author has connected himself through six degrees to Sanders, but I can connect him -- through me!
Deion Sanders played football for the greatest NFL team in history (Nye would argue this point; he would say Green Bay Packers), the Washington Redskins, in 2000-01, before temporarily retiring, and after five seasons with Satan, er, I mean, the Dallass Cowboys.
Sonny Jurgensen, Hall of Fame former quarterback for the Skins as well as the Philadelphia Eagles, played for the Redskins 1972-73 squad that went to Super Bowl VII, and lost to the Miami Dolphins, in their record-setting undefeated season. Jurgensen was in the broadcast booth as the voice of the Washington Redskins while Sanders played for them.
Billy Kilmer, however, was Jurgensen's backup QB in Super Bowl VII.
On that team, served defensive back Brig Owens, whose prowess on the field in running interceptions for touchdowns helped the Redskins win the NFC Championship game by defeating Satan, 26-3 at RFK Stadium. Like Sanders, Owens got himself in good with the Lord by renouncing his allegiance to the Dallass Cowboys, of which he was a former member for one season, before spending the rest of his career with the Burgundy and Gold. In Super Bowl VII, Owens had a key interception off Dolphins' QB Bob Griese, which prevented the game from being a total blowout loss for the Redkins (they lost, 14-7).
In 1973, at a book signing at Woodward & Lothrop department store at the Capitol Plaza shopping center in PG County, Maryland, I met Brig Owens, shook his hand, while my mom paid for Owens's book, "Over the Hill to the Super Bowl" (Co-written with Chuck Cascio). I waited in line two hours to meet him. I was eight years old at the time.
Almost thirty years later, I served with the author of this book, SSG Joe Nye, as a member of the Delaware Army National Guard in the 444th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, between 2002-2004.
Voila, there it is!
This book should be made into a movie, "Six Degrees of Deion Sanders," starring Will Smith as the versatile athlete. (Kevin Bacon, of course, must be given a cameo).

Was one athlete so prominent that his career can be linked to every major sports icon of the 20th Century, from Jim Thorpe to Tiger Woods? Can one athlete's career possibly span Babe Ruth and LeBron James? In Deion Sanders and the Sports Universe, Joe Nye takes a fun, informative look at how "Primetime" can be connected, through teammates, to a variety of sports legends using the six degrees of separation format.

A two-sport star that played for eight different professional teams, Sanders was the quintessential modern athlete whose career connected him directly to the likes of future Hall of Famers such as Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith and Barry Bonds and indirectly to players dating as far back as Ty Cobb, Sammy Baugh and Wilt Chamberlain.

For example, Sanders played on the 1989 New York Yankees with Don Mattingly, who had earlier played with Phil Niekro on the 1985 Yankees. In 1969, Niekro played on the Atlanta Braves with the great Hank Aaron.

Over the course of Deion Sanders and the Sports Universe, Nye takes you through connections to more than 400 superstars in a variety of categories, and ponders the ultimate question: Is Deion Sanders really the center of the sports universe?

Years ago, I read the first L.A. Bizarro. LOL - admittedly, I was too young and too afraid to visit some of the places listed in the book, so I read it with a sort of voyeuristic wistfulness.
Now, Older (not that much!) and braver, I was thrilled to find the new, updated L.A. Bizarro.
This isn't your Grandma's guidebook!
The authors of L.A. Bizarro bring L.A. natives and tourists alike a peephole view into the kitschy, deviant and bizarre L.A. The L.A. you only dream about.
The book is full of information on some of the weirdest and most interesting places in L.A. From stores where you can buy hardcore S&M Furniture, to dive bars, to haunted hotels and nude beaches, L.A. Bizarro brings them all to you.
A quick warning: some of the entries and photos are definitely not appropriate for kids. The book is strictly adults only, but it's a great deal of fun!

Lonely Planet Hawaii Review

Lonely Planet Hawaii
Average Reviews:

Lonely Planet has always been a trusted resource for traveling, and this HI version did not disappoint. I initially bought the guide hoping that it would give me enough information about the islands as a whole (to help decide which one to visit for my first trip to HI) and yet still contain enough details on each specific island to be an asset once the destination was decided. Once I reached Maui, the book was still thorough enough for that individual island to be a helpful resource on places to eat, visit, and snorkel. While this book fit my needs perfectly as both an overview of all the Hawaiian Islands and a guide to Maui itself, due to the format there isn't a huge amount of depth on some things, like hiking. For future trips I would be tempted to buy an accompanying island-specific guide (we borrowed one and the level of detail was greater).
This book was helpful not only in planning my trip, but an excellent guide once I got there (maps were great). I will definitely use it on my next visit to the islands - Kaui is next on the list!

Dr. Walfish's book is a testament to progressive parenting. Her ideas are thorough, thoughtful and clear. As a parent of 3 girls, ranging in age for 6-14, she is able to give me strategies and suggestions to deal with each of them. We cannot parent all of our children the same, and Dr. Walfish understands that like no other. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has kids or works with kids!

A healthy relationship based on mutual trust is every parent's wish. The bond between infant and parent is a natural phenomenon, but as children reach their preteens and form their own personalities, fireworks between the child and parent can ensue. Drawing on 20 years of clinical experience and new theories on attachment, family therapist and consultant to Parents magazine Dr. Fran Walfish argues that parents need to distinguish their own personality types in order to make more informed decisions about how they interact and raise their own children.

Once A Warrior Review

Once A Warrior
Average Reviews:

Former UH Wideout - Ian Sample - generated a storm of controversy in Hawaii one month prior to the start of their 2007 season with the release of this book. The brouhaha that occurred was triggered by Sample releasing portions of his book, that his publisher chose to delete, on his personal MySpace blog that chronicled some of the more negative aspects of the UH football such as alleged drug use, academic improprieties and groupie sex. Since then, school and team officials have proven that some of Sample's allegations are false (cheating on drug testing) while others (academic shenanigans) are currently under investigation.
In the end, it truly is a shame that Sample decided to spurn his publisher's advice and release these controversial, unsubstantiated chapters because all it did was alienate the large demographic originally interested in purchasing the book - the hardcore Hawaii football fan.
The ensuing controversy immediately forced thousands of potential readers to turn their back on a book and player once loved and respected in the 50th State. Which is really a damn shame...because ironically, the actual published book is a great inside look at June Jones' Warrior Football team and their turbulent, spirited 2006 season. While certain aspects are somewhat critical of June Jones and the program, the publishing editors ultimately released a book that is both a paen and swan song to one of the most colorful teams in the world of Collegiate Football. Fans that know the team and the rocky ride that was their 2006 season will enjoy bits such as a near brawl between Hawaii and Arizona State players at a 'friendly' banquet prior to the Hawaii Bowl as well as insights into life on the road, hobbies and past-times of the players (videogames, poker, etc), the love of the islands that transplanted players feel as well as great character studies of Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, Adam Leonard, etc.
Those of you willing to look past Sample's misguided attempt at generating publicity will surely enjoy this book - the way it was meant to be read.

Go behind the scenes in the huddle, in the locker room and on the road with former University of Hawaii receiver J. Ian Sample. What is it really like to be a UH football player? Sample answers this question with honesty and humor. Each chapter focuses on a single game from the Warriors' record-breaking 2006 season, sharing intimate details both on and off the field. Anecdotes in Once A Warrior run the gamut from summer camp pillow fights to dancing the haka to intimidate opponents. It's a player's eye-view of a special season in University of Hawaii football history—the joy of winning big, the sting of losing the close ones—and a heartfelt look at what it means to be a Warrior.

Know Your Family, Know Yourself
I wished I would have had this book before my dad died. He died in 2008 (my mom is in a home in the last stages of Alzheimer's). It was while staying at my parents house clearing out all their belongings I found this unmarked audio cassette tape. It was my dad reading a poem about St. Nick. The tears rolled down my cheeks as I listened. It made me realize how much I missed the sound of his voice.
This book is great to know your family and friends, and to know yourself. In chapter 3, "Ask a Question, Gather a Story, you will find seventy-three pages of questions. Just reading the questions gives you insight not just about the person you would interview, but yourself. The categories of questions alone give insight for painting a picture of one's life. For example, just reading: "The Terrific Twenty questions on page 56-57 is a good way to know people better. There are around forty-three categories and seventy-three pages of questions. There are the usual categories like, Teen Years, Career and unusual categories: "Rites of Passage" category: "Who taught you to ride a bike." "The Wider World," asks, "What kinds of world events were discussed at home." It makes you think about what matters.
This book has everything you need for an oral history, writing a memoir, or just questions to know your family better.
You, or the person being interviewed, may not be famous to the wider world, but I bet you are the heart and world to people who love you, and vice versa. Capture that life, those special moments in a form that can be shared and remembered. Do an oral history of your own life. An oral history is a priceless gift.

We all know that we should ask now, before it's too late, before the stories are gone forever. But knowing and doing are two different things.Cynthia Hart, author of Cynthia Hart's Scrapbook Workshop, shows exactly how to collect, record, share, and preserve a family member's or a friend's oral history in this practical and inspirational guide. The Oral History Workshop breaks down what too often feels like an overwhelming project into a series of easily manageable steps: how to prepare for an interview; how to become a better listener; why there's always more beneath the surface and the questions to ask to get there; the pros and cons of video recording, including how your subjects should dress so the focus is on their words; four steps to keeping the interview on track; how to be attentive to your subject's energy levels; and the art of archiving or scrapbooking the interview into a finished keepsake. At the heart of the book are hundreds of questions designed to cover every aspect of your subject's history: Do you remember when and how you learned to read? Who in your life showed you the most kindness? What insights have you gained about your parents over the years? Would you describe yourself as an optimist or a pessimist? In what ways were you introduced to music? What is the first gift you remember giving? If you could hold on to one memory forever, what would it be? When the answers are pieced together, a mosaic appears-a living history.

British Language and Culture (Lonely Planet Language and Culture) (Language Reference)

As an ex-pat American living in London, I find this book essential when trying to decipher the large number of different words and phrases that the Brits use: I can honestly tell you that the Phrasebook saved me from the horrors of a zucchini dinner when I found out what 'courgettes' really are. I also finally understood the meanings of 'put paid' and 'punters' and enjoyed the section on British sport: while I still don't fully understand cricket and have absolutely no idea about rugby, I now know a bit more than nothing, which is helpful the next time you're in a pub and a Test Match is on.
The less helpful sections of the book were the bits on more obscure language usage like Cockney rhyming slang and Scots Gaelic: I've never heard any rhyming slang in London and when I was in the Highlands the only time I heard Gaelic was on the radio. However, I'm not complaining: it's a whole lot of fun to be able to know how to say 'caite am bheil an t-amar snamh' ('where's the swimming pool'), even if the Scots themselves don't understand, and now I know that nothing beats a good dinner of Lillian Gish (fish) with gay and frisky (whiskey).
Anyway, the Phrasebook also contains a section for each part of Britain plus sections on pronounciation, accomodation, entertainment and society (how to address the Queen when you meet her) and, most important of all, a mini American-British dictionary.
All in all, highly recommended.

An interesting conversation took place the other day. I mentioned to my grandfather, now in his early 80s, that I had just bought the new book entitled "All those Mornings...at the Post." And he responded with, "I grew up reading Shirley Povich."
My response: "So did I, and I am 25." And so did my father. That's the amazing thing about Povich - he linked generations. He wrote about stars from Walter Johnson to Michael Jordan and everyone in between.
As a freelance sports writer, and former sports editor of my college newspaper, the Towerlight in Towson, Md., Povich was my biggest inspiration growing up and I would be willing to bet that most other sportswriters or aspiring sportswriters feel the same way.
I tried to put in perspective to my wife how influential he was. I said he is the Humphrey Bogart of sports writing. He is the epitome of what newspapermen should be and he was just as good in 1994 as he was in 1924.
The amazing thing is he never retired and wrote his final column the day before he died in 1998. This book brings his most important columns to life and for people of my generation we get to live events such as the Senators' only World Series title in 1924 for the first time.
This book is a treasure and is highly recommended to anyone who has ever read a sports column. Chances are the person who wrote the column did so because Shirley L. Povich inspired him.
