Sports-talk Radio in America: Its Context And Culture
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Edited by John Mark Dempsey, Ph.D., Sports-Talk Radio in America: Its Context and Culture is an anthology of essays by learned authors and field professionals about major, medium, and small-market stations across America with an all-sports format. Each is presented with an eye toward the individual programming strategies and charismatic personalities that made them successful. Written in mostly plain terms (and some sports-specific terminology), Sports-Talk Radio in America is as accessible to the casual sports-talk radio fan as it is to a prospective sports-talk radio station owner or professional. From WFAN and the inception of all-sports radio to WHB Kansas City "World's Happiest Broadcasters", Sports-Talk Radio in America is part history, part tribute, part testimony, and entirely enjoyable. Recommended for anyone with an interest in the field.

An inside look at the hosts, hot spots, and history of sports-talk radioSports-Talk Radio in America looks at major-, medium-, and small-market stations across the United States that feature an all-sports format, with a focus on the unique personalities and programming strategies that make each station successful. Broadcasters, journalists, and academics provide insight on how and why this media phenomenon has become an important influence of American culture, examining the “guy talk” broadcasting approach, the traditional sports-emphasis approach, “HSOs” (hot sports opinions), localism in broadcasting, how sports talk radio builds “communities” of listeners, and how reckless, on-air comments can actually build ratings. For better of worse, millions of (mostly) male listeners indulge their obsession with sports to the exclusion of virtually everything else available on the radio dial-music, news, and political talk. This unique book examines how this “niche of the niche” has formed a bond between its hosts and their rabid, passionate, and loyal audiences, spinning the dial from the largest, best-known stations in big-league markets to smaller stations in Collegetown, USA, including Philadelphia's WIP, “The Ticket,” KTCK in Dallas, WEEI in Boston, “The Team,” WQTM in Orlando, KJR in Seattle, KOZN “The Zone” Omaha, Nebraska, WGR and WNSA in Buffalo, Kansas City's WHB, and “The Fan,” WFAN in New York, the first all-sports radio station and the blueprint for the format. Sports-Talk Radio in America puts you in the studio with Mike and the Mad Dog, Angelo Cataldi, Howard Eskin, “The Musers” (“Junior” Miller and George Dunham), Norm Hitges, John Dennis and Gerry Callahan, Dan Sileo, Howard Simon, and Art Wander. Sports-Talk Radio in America examines:
how stations create an environment in which listeners become part of a social group (social-identity and self-categorization theories)
personality-driven programming
the station's commitment to local teams and their fans
how exploring controversial topics beyond sports broadens station's appeal and attracts upscale, affluent audience
how an abundance of live, play-by-play broadcasting, creating plenty of available content
college sports in a town without a major professional sports team
how local sports is framed by hosts and callers
the conflicted relationship between sports-talk radio and the print media
and much more!
Sports-Talk Radio in America is a must-read for academics and professionals working in radio-television and popular culture.

I first discovered this author when I was checking out the new ebook publisher loose-id.com and read the excerpt for her latest ICE MAN (which I wound up buying and which was terrific BTW) and it got me digging up other stories she's written. I found A GRAND PASSION in paperback here at Amazon and snapped it up. I really enjoyed this story!
Casey Hatter is a widow of two years who has moved to Italy (Turin) to study art and to start her life anew. She cherishes her husband's memory and meeting a man is the last thing on her mind, but when her former boss, editor of a women's magazine, asks a favour she is hard-pressed to refuse. The favour is to interview an Italian soccer star for a profile on international athletes. Though she knows nothing about soccer and has never even seen a game, she agrees. But when she meets Alessandro Sottini unexpected sparks fly (he's got gorgeous raven curls and mesmerizing amber eyes) and she finds herself agreeing to have dinner with him. Little does she know what's in store for her as she has no idea how famous and popular he is in Turin!
Alessandro is immediately attracted to the blond-haired brown-eyed out-of-a-Botticelli-painting Casey. In complete contrast to the various actresses and models his publicist usually sets him up with she's genuine and sweet and just plain nice. A woman he wants to get to know and spend time with. But it's easier said than done when Alessandro can barely go out in public without being mobbed by his fans and the papparazzi. While he loves his fame and the lifestyle it affords him it's also lonely, isolating and at times superficial. All of which makes Casey even more desirable and he is determined to have her in his life. But Casey is not comfortable with life in a fishbowl or with the reaction of his fans to their relationship and when her former in-laws visit, even more complications arise. But you'll root for this terrific couple to overcome all of there obstacles and have the happily ever after they deserve!
My only issue with the story was with Alessandro's passive attitude toward the actions of his fans and the press, but I guess there really is only so much one can do in that situation. Anyway, I loved it and recommend it highly!

Casey Hatter thought Turin would be a peaceful reprieve, time to heal from her loss. She'd study art, learn Italian, maybe even learn to cook. Meeting a man was the farthest thing from her mind. But when her tyrannical ex-boss Greta pressures her into interviewing the fabulously wealthy and charming Italian soccer sensation, Alessandro Sottini, sparks fly.Alessandro's nothing like her first love, a gentleman with tame ambitions. He's vibrant with unruly passions, quixotically philosophical, desperately sexy. . .in a word, Italian. No woman alive could say no to him. And the woman Alessandro wants is Casey. . .Review quotes for A Grand Passion by Samantha Winston". . .Readers who enjoy hot and passionate physical contact will enjoy A GRAND PASSION. A History of Cannon Mountain: Trails, Tales and Ski Legends (NH) Review

A History of Cannon Mountain: Trails, Tales and Ski Legends (NH)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this book today from Amazon, and proceeded to read it obsessively in one sitting interrupted only by dinner. What a great book! My hearty congratulations to Meghan McCarthy McPhaul (that's a lot of Mc's for one name) on a really superb, well-done book. A History of Cannon Mountain does a remarkable job of conveying the spirit, atmosphere, and joy of what Cannon Mountain is for those of us fortunate to have skied, hiked, or otherwise recreated there. As someone who has skied Cannon continuously since 1978, I have to say that it was a lot of fun to read the history that I knew, and the history that I didn't know.
And there is a lot of history worth knowing. Cannon has always been regarded as a special place, and to this day it still retains very special qualities that you won't find at other ski areas. Aside from the remarkable setting, with the imposing Mt. Lafayette range across the notch, there is a lot at Cannon that is unique. And the author successfully captures that and conveys it. She is a great writer, and she obviously knows (and loves) her subject.
I've read other books of this sort and most are nowhere near as good. If you are even a little bit interested in Cannon Mountain and its history--and even if you haven't skied there, its history is well worth knowing--then this is a book you will want to read. And the collection of pictures in the book is especially great too, they tell a significant part of the story. I really enjoyed this book, and I'm sure I will be reading it again.
This book comes out at a time when Cannon is being threatened by foolish, short-sighted state legislators in NH who want to sell off--oh excuse me, "lease" or "privatize"--the crown jewel of the NH State Park system. In order to save a few measly dollars, they want to leave it to the private sector to rape and pillage Cannon Mountain, which will destroy the essence of what makes this place so special. The question that needs to be asked is, what kind of legacy do we want to leave to our children and grandchildren? Do we want to leave them an intact and beautiful State Park that is lovingly cared for by long-term employees who to a person see themselves as stewards in a long line of citizens protecting our common heritage, or do we want to instead leave our children and grandchildren the beauty of condos as far as the eye can see, crass commercialism, and perhaps even a "charming" and "quaint" village built at the base of the ski area, where the elite can go purchase the latest ski fashions from Europe, get facials, and then after dinner the whole family can go to the IMAX theater to watch a film about bears and other wildlife that used to live in the park and on Cannon Mountain. Is this what we want?
The reason why we have government is to protect the common good. This book does a wonderful job of explaining what the common good is in this situation. I hope that NH finds the wisdom and courage to do what's right for all of us, rather than in the excuse of "budget cuts" giving to the few that which rightfully belongs to all of us.

Cannon Mountain's history is steeped in skiing legend and lore. Rising at the western edge of New Hampshire's magnificently beautiful Franconia Notch State Park, the granite-domed mountain has been the playground of skiers since the 1930s. Here, the country's first down-mountain ski trail was cleared in 1933, the first aerial tramway was built on the mountain and the first professional ski patrol was established. More than a dozen members of the U.S. Ski Hall of Fame--whose contributions to the sport include historic racing feats, the development of ski techniques and designing countless ski areas across the country and around the world--have called Cannon their home hill. Join author and longtime Cannon skier Meghan McCarthy McPhaul on the slopes of this historic mountain.

Crisis & Renewal: Meeting the Challenge of Organizational Change Review

Crisis and Renewal: Meeting the Challenge of Organizational Change
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When the Globe & Mail newspaper reviewed this book, it referred to Mr. Hurst as "a thinking manager's Tom Peters." Not bad, and based on the book not entirely unjustified.
What makes this book really fascinating to me is the way it weaves insights from human history, anthropology, science, and personal business experience into a coherent picture of organizational growth, decay, and renewal. A lot of us have had a feeling that the standard bell curves and life cycles weren't really all that helpful. David Hurst has proposed an alternative solidly grounded in practice and history, one which is much better-suited to helping real managers think systemically about their companies and make decisions on the ground.
Hopefully David can expand on some of his insights in a forthcoming book, and include some more business cases that show his ideas in action. Action-oriented, "give it to me in 10 bullet points" types will probably find this book a bit frustrating for that reason. But if you belong to the school of thought that says wanting everything in 10 bullet points is part of the problem, this is definitely a book worth your time.

The Games Presidents Play: Sports and the Presidency Review

The Games Presidents Play: Sports and the Presidency
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In his latest work, "Games Presidents Play", author John Watterson has brought us an easy read and one filled with plenty of interesting anecdotes to satisfy even the most knowledgeable presidential historians. This book is clearly the perfect item for any reader with even a casual interest in the presidents and/or sporting activities in general.

While there is some basic material about each man's time as the country's president, the primary focus of the book is to tell us about the athletic or sporting activities that aided the presidents in finding much-needed relaxation away from the office, while also having some influence on American culture in general on occasion.
Watterson obviously begins with George Washington, and while the first president's physical strength and horsemanship are still held in great regard even today, what was interesting to this reader was Washington's fervent interest in the formal horse-racing and surrounding social functions that he often attended in Annapolis and Philadelphia.
Not every president comes in for a writeup by the author -- after all, it is difficult to imagine men like John Adams or James Madison participating in anything more strenuous than an occasional horseback ride out of sheer necessity.
The sporting activities of the presidents really began to gain national recognition with Theodore Roosevelt -- a man the author describes as one who "represents a melding of sports and politics that has now become commonplace." Watterson credits Roosevelt with originating what he calls "the twentieth-century sporting presidency."
From there on we get a good deal more material on the sporting activities of the varios 20th century presidents, including such men as Woodrow Wilson, Herbert Hoover, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Gerald Ford (who actually was a very capable football lineman at the University of Michigan in the early 1930s), Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton. The stories of Clinton bending the rules of golf to suit his fancy was no surprise to this reader, and Watterson mentions that Clinton's "critics suggested that his golfing character was a mirror image" of some of his other White House misbehavior that landed him in big trouble.
Again, "The Games Presidents Play" is an easy read -- well researched and well written -- by an author who has previously produced one of the best books ("College Football") written on the off-the-field history of college football. GPP would make a nice gift for any reader with even a casual interest in the American presidency.

This is undoubtedly one of the most well-written and challenging books that I have ever read. In the light of both the terrible condition of the world around us and the amazing redemption that Jesus has provided, is there any real alternative to living all-out for God? "Revolution" catalogs men and women, past and present, who have gone all-out and produced fruit that will abide. We are invited to do the same and given a road map that we can follow. Let's go for it!
This book is a must-read for all believers - unless, of course, you want to live a mediocre life.

This book is not a call for the violent overthrow of the government, nor is it a call to take up arms, nor is it a call to political activism in and of itself. It is a call to something far more extreme, a call to live out the gospel with all its radical claims, a call for the people of God to impact this generation with the prophetic message of repentance, a call to spark the most sweeping counterculture movement in our nation's history, a call to take back the moral ground that has been stolen from under our feet, a call to follow Jesus by life or by death. In that sense, it is a call to start a revolution - now!

Adventure-based training has become an effective medium for delivering experiential training programs within a variety of disciplines such as; school outdoor education, corporate teamwork development, youth at risk and psychological counseling. In addition, Meyer & Wenger (1998) and Meyer (2000) were instrumental in pioneering research in to the efficacy of adventure-based training with sporting teams. This investigation adds to the growing body of knowledge in this area by demonstrating the positive effects an adventure training intervention has on athletes ability to learn new team and psychological skills. In addition, results indicated that individual and team performance might have been enhanced because of skills learnt during the intervention. This study examined the impact of an adventure-based training intervention on the group cohesion and psychological skills development of elite netball players. Data was gathered using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Many researchers are of the belief that the two methodologies compliment one another and thereby strengthen the total research model (Henderson, 1993).A phenomenological approach to qualitative data collection was followed based on the work by Dale (1996). Knowing how the intervention impacted on the participants from their perspective, is a critical question often overlooked by researchers. Results clearly indicated how athleteschanged and developed during and after the intervention. Improved cohesion around task issues was especially evident, along with enhanced mental skills to handle the pressures of major competition. Lewin s change theory was examined to explain the learning process; modifications to this theory were suggested. Recommendations were outlined for improving sport psychology teaching practice, along with improved facilitation of adventure programming.

Living in America, where we lack any media coverage of national and international rugby, this book was a great personal story of a Welsh rugby superstar, as well as an interesting way to become familiar with the culture of international rugby. The story is amusing and well told, with great commentary on the sport and what it means to play it. I highly reccomend it to ruggers everywhere.

Rupert Moon's tale has more to it than tries and tackles. He came from a family who were passionate about the game of rugby union, and their involvement with the local club at Walsall and its players fired the imagination of a gangly, cumbersome kid. His is a story of belonging and of finding a place where rugby was the very lifeblood of the community. It is also the story of a player whose burgeoning celebrity status threatened to dwarf his many achievements on the fields of play. Away from the mud and glory, Rupert explores the side of rugby the fans seldom see. Alongside a trail of humorous anecdotes, he recalls the drinking sprees, tours, endless training, backstabbing, media exploitation, professionalism, club politics, coaches, comebacks, and enduring friendships. This is the story of a man who took his rugby seriously without ever taking himself so.
