This book's got everything a die-hard Metallica fan could ask for. I just finished reading it and I couldn't put it down. Normally, I don't read anything, but this being the best book about the best band in the world, I never stopped until the end. Complete history, all the songs played over the years, whatever you wanna know about the band, you'll find it here. If you've never read this book, you're not a full-fledged Metallica fan. Great job, Sem!

Armies of the Raj: From the Great Indian Mutiny to Independence, 1858-1947 Review

Armies of the Raj: From the Great Indian Mutiny to Independence, 1858-1947

I greatly enjoyed this book. Not because it was one just filled with dry military maps and campaigns, but because it got down to the core issue itself. Life in the Raj's army, and what the men, both Indian and British, had to go through, up until the Raj was disbanded. Though pro-British in views, it was still a fascinating book.

Ronald Segal's book "The Black Diaspora" is an excellent historical and cultural account of African descendents living outside of Africa. This book is so smoothly written that it is impossible not to enjoy and learn a great deal from its pages. The format and flow are so well put together that Segal's many topics of discussion are beautifully linked with easy transitions. I loved this book and learned a huge amount about the black diaspora despite having read many, many other books on this same topic.

Lonely Planet Los Angeles and Southern California (Regional Guide)

We spent a week in the LA area visiting a long term resident and used this book every day! We wanted to visit both tourist sites and places off the beaten track, and were able to do both. Our family had a diverse list of places to go and things to do - see a star or two, visit hollywood, visit some ethnic areas (such as Little Saigon for an article for chaobannewsletter.com), visit an aquarium, eat family friendly food, hit the beaches, go to an amusement park, etc. It helped us with everything.
My only quibble is that we could have used even more family oriented advice and recommendations.
I looked at five or six guidebooks before picking this one - both because I have used their guides before and because it seemed to do the best job with details and off the beaten track exploration. This definately was the right choice. We used it every single day - to plan, to get to each place and also to eat.

Average Reviews:

This was a beautifully written book. It described the journey that Maria took after the horrific accident that took her young son's life 6 years ago until now. She shared the lowest moments and how she rose from the pain. It was raw and heart wrenching to read, but yet beautifully done at the same time. You really could feel her pain. She also made you realize that you truly can move on with your life and keep your loved one with you. That is how I would want to move forward as well. She will help so many with this heartfelt book. I highly recommend it and have sent it on to my family to read.

Digital Signage Broadcasting: Broadcasting, Content Management, and Distribution Techniques (Focal Press Media Technology Professional Series) Review

Digital Signage Broadcasting: Broadcasting, Content Management, and Distribution Techniques (Focal Press Media Technology Professional Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Every ad agency or marketing director should have a copy of this book on their shelves. Marketing and graphics design students would also benefit. Digital Signs are becoming pervasive, from airport displays to retail stores to information kiosks, and they provide an excellent new revenue opportunity. This book provides a complete over-view of the current technology and applications for this rapidly evolving new medium, providing examples and applications. The book is logical and thorough. Reading like a series of classes, Mr. Lundstrom not only provides a discussion of the progression of digital signs from simple systems to complex, he makes difficult technical concepts easy for the non-technical person to understand. He frames key design questions and provides the parameters to use for evaluation of the solution right for a particular application: What type of screen to choose? What makes digital signs different from television? What kind of media server will work best? How does one feed multiple locations? At what point does the internet help? At what number of locations should one turn to a satellite broadcast solution? What is an edge server? How can one "stream" video? How can one mix "live" content with pre-recorded materials? What is a playlist and how does scheduling work? What is content management? The majority of the book is devoted to the evolution of a Digital Signage system, network designs and the current state of the art in distribution. Business people will find the Ninth and Tenth chapters most helpful for they focus on the gathering of content, billing concerns and operating considerations. For executives, Chapter Eleven lists a number of the applications currently used in the US and Europe, and discusses the idea of creating an environment to drive the consumer to use in inter-active and static viewing screens. The book does not provide a list of software suppliers, equipment manufacturers and system integrators, although a few are mentioned as examples. The author includes a thorough glossary and addendum outlining some of the more technical aspects of transmission calculations. It is clear he has worked with many of these different types of networks and has established a web site for continuing education and communications. It is full of information, most of which will not become dated so this book can remain a reference for many years.

The Encyclopedia of Superstitions Review

The Encyclopedia of Superstitions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Richard Webster's "The Encyclopedia of Superstitions" is a collection of superstitions, primarily from the Western world [not including regional superstitions] and are alphabetically listed, from A to Z. However, the author lists not just superstitions associated with particular objects, creatures or people, but also anything associated with the subject, e.g. divination, though not strictly a form of superstition, has associations with the subject and hence the author includes it and even mentions the different forms of divination.
A typical entry reads something like this - "Purse: It is important to place a coin in any purse that you intend to give away as a gift. This ensures that the person who receives the purse will have good luck and will never run out of money. See coin, money"
The list of superstitions is by no means exhaustive as the author himself in the preface mentions the large scope of superstitions of cultures across the globe. Perhaps at some point, there will a compendium of Eastern superstitions.
On the whole, this is an amusing and interesting read for fans of trivia, and may even be helpful for purposes of research. There aren't much illustrations, just random black and white drawings of objects of superstitions. Final verdict: a fun & informative read!

Nazi Literature in the Americas (New Directions Paperbook) Review

Nazi Literature in the Americas (New Directions Paperbook)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To preface: As we all know, Roberto Bolano passed away in 2003. Like many in America, New Directions let us in on the secret with "By Night In Chile" and "Distant Star" (which is actually an elaboration of the final story in "Nazi Literature in the Americas"). Next came "Last Evenings on Earth" and "Amulet" last year. "The Savage Detectives" came out via Farrar, Straus and Giroux last year as well and, his masterpiece, "2666" is on its way. If you haven't read any of these, it doesn't matter what order, just read any and all.
"Nazi Literature in the Americas" reads like a history (but not in a bad way). Bolano creates dozens of personalities, each with intricite details and interesting character traits that even a third-party (Bolano) can convey gently. Each character exists throughout North and South America in the twentieth-century, some not dying until 2040 (which Bolano uses to hint that these people still exist into the later twenty-first century).
As the title suggests, each character is tied, in Bolano fashion, to fascist literary movements in their respective time period and country. Edelmira Thompson de Mendiluce, the first chronicled in the novel, is a bourgeois Argentine who met Hitler in the 1930's and was sympathetic to the cause ever since. Max Mirebalais, is a poor Haitian who steals from other European poets and crafts "many masks," which he uses to create an ideology of hate. Argentino Schiaffino is a thug from Buenos Aires who loves soccer and violence and believes in the heirarchy of races and is on the run most of his life for murder.
One gets the point. The problem is, this doesn't half convey the textual density and complexity of the work. The way the characters interact within each others stories, how one influences the other, etc. The depth that Bolano went through to create this world is astonishing (as his epilogue with a glossary of names, places, publishers, books, and miniture biographies of minor characters in the stories).
The beauty, in the end, is that each is not a celebrate of Hitler or Aryan supremacy. Most are misguided and some are playing games even with themselves. The real world is ever present in Bolanos world and the presence of these characters moving, most of the time at odds with the real world, is fascinating. The trick is that each characters intolerance is shown in different ways - not directed at Hitler or other fascist leaders, but in the culture of fascism that still exists today - even as it did in 1996 when this novel was published.
I cannot recommend this more highly. I was anticipating it greatly and I was not let down. The only problem for avid readers of Bolano, is the final chapter, "The Infamous Ramirez Hoffman" is the shortened version of his previous novel "Distant Star," which he does allude to at the beginning of that work. But taken separately, the shortened version does leave much to be desired - which one fulfills with "Distant Star." It is also different because, while famous for his first person narration, "Ramirez Hoffman" is the only instance that Bolano appears in this novel, so take what one can from it.
If you love this, don't worry - New Directions has many more novels coming. This will surely tide fans down until FSG releases Bolano's 1,200+ page masterpiece "2666" sometime, hopefully, next year. Enjoy.

This is undoubtedly one of the most well-written and challenging books that I have ever read. In the light of both the terrible condition of the world around us and the amazing redemption that Jesus has provided, is there any real alternative to living all-out for God? "Revolution" catalogs men and women, past and present, who have gone all-out and produced fruit that will abide. We are invited to do the same and given a road map that we can follow. Let's go for it!
This book is a must-read for all believers - unless, of course, you want to live a mediocre life.

This book is not a call for the violent overthrow of the government, nor is it a call to take up arms, nor is it a call to political activism in and of itself. It is a call to something far more extreme, a call to live out the gospel with all its radical claims, a call for the people of God to impact this generation with the prophetic message of repentance, a call to spark the most sweeping counterculture movement in our nation's history, a call to take back the moral ground that has been stolen from under our feet, a call to follow Jesus by life or by death. In that sense, it is a call to start a revolution - now!
