Digital Signage Broadcasting: Broadcasting, Content Management, and Distribution Techniques (Focal Press Media Technology Professional Series) Review

Digital Signage Broadcasting: Broadcasting, Content Management, and Distribution Techniques (Focal Press Media Technology Professional Series)

Every ad agency or marketing director should have a copy of this book on their shelves. Marketing and graphics design students would also benefit. Digital Signs are becoming pervasive, from airport displays to retail stores to information kiosks, and they provide an excellent new revenue opportunity. This book provides a complete over-view of the current technology and applications for this rapidly evolving new medium, providing examples and applications. The book is logical and thorough. Reading like a series of classes, Mr. Lundstrom not only provides a discussion of the progression of digital signs from simple systems to complex, he makes difficult technical concepts easy for the non-technical person to understand. He frames key design questions and provides the parameters to use for evaluation of the solution right for a particular application: What type of screen to choose? What makes digital signs different from television? What kind of media server will work best? How does one feed multiple locations? At what point does the internet help? At what number of locations should one turn to a satellite broadcast solution? What is an edge server? How can one "stream" video? How can one mix "live" content with pre-recorded materials? What is a playlist and how does scheduling work? What is content management? The majority of the book is devoted to the evolution of a Digital Signage system, network designs and the current state of the art in distribution. Business people will find the Ninth and Tenth chapters most helpful for they focus on the gathering of content, billing concerns and operating considerations. For executives, Chapter Eleven lists a number of the applications currently used in the US and Europe, and discusses the idea of creating an environment to drive the consumer to use in inter-active and static viewing screens. The book does not provide a list of software suppliers, equipment manufacturers and system integrators, although a few are mentioned as examples. The author includes a thorough glossary and addendum outlining some of the more technical aspects of transmission calculations. It is clear he has worked with many of these different types of networks and has established a web site for continuing education and communications. It is full of information, most of which will not become dated so this book can remain a reference for many years.

Mastering MultiCamera Techniques: From Preproduction to Editing and Deliverables Review

Mastering MultiCamera Techniques: From Preproduction to Editing and Deliverables

This book, MASTERING MULTICAMERA TECHNIQUES, is a thoroughly comprehensive look at cinematography and the digital editing process. This is NOT one of those cheesy how-to-lighting books that seems to be given away with every camera ever made. No! This is cameramen and camerawomen taking you within inches of performers, like Paul McCartney and Elton John, in a live concert setting. This is backstage where gaffers and technicians set up their equipment and do sound check while engineers in the editing room monitor multiple camera angles over David Letterman's studio soundstage. This is part text-book, part insider's information, part university course for interested persons who'd like to work behind the scenes in film, theatre, television or perhaps to have the practical information on creating her/his own production company.
This really is a phenomenal book.
It is essentially a marriage between two departments: the audio/visual and the digital editing departments. Everything that you need, think you need and things you probably wouldn't have thought about are discussed here.
Preproduction. The author, Mitch Jacobson, discusses topics ranging from organizing personnel, the kinds of recording equipment, archiving to post-production facilities and costs.
Production. Types of multi-camera productions, setting up in various venues, studios and stadiums. The logistics of setting up equipment. "On Shoot Day," he discusses the floor plans from what tools to use to power the equipment, the location of the crew, to the art of "camera matching." Beautiful photographs show how various camera angles are fed and synched to the editing room where we see how the production of the David Letterman show is carried out.
* Timecode and Synch Methods
* Computers and Editing Codecs
* Nonlinear Editing Software programs--Apple, Avid, Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas and Grass Valley's Edius. (Edius...didn't see that coming!)
* Preparing the Project For Editing.
* Grouping and Synching Angles.
* Cutting Techniques and Styles
* Cutting Music and editing with multiple performances
* Sitcoms and Comedy
* The Main Event
* Deliverables/ Conforming the Master Tape/ Reloading/ Color Correction
* Audio in Post-Production
* Lighting
* Case Studies, including the Paul McCartney event.
Most of the 17 Focal Press titles I own are either above average or excellent. A few are so well done that they necessitate purchase because you will find someone, whether yourself or someone who wants to get into the industry and you know that such a publication would be invaluable. So you buy it to support the author for a job well done and you, perhaps, pay-it-forward as a gift to a deserving individual or institution. If you feel this way, then along with Directing the Documentary, Fifth Edition, How to Make Animated Films: Tony White's Complete Masterclass on the Traditional Principals of Animation and The Complete Film Production Handbook, Fourth Edition ...
MASTERING MULTICAMERA TECHNIQUES should be at the top of your list.
Beyond 5 stars.

A well written book and great introduction into digital/audio broadcast incl. Video Conference and compression techniques (incl. H.264). Level: beginner / intermediate. The writing styled is clear and non-technical readers should understand it quickly.
But what's being technical? Some would argue that understanding the different levels of H.264 is technical (not covered in detail). Or understanding 'calculating network bandwidth' (covered on 2 pages). It's certainly not a book for techies in the field. I would consider a hard-core technical book like 'Peer-to-Peer Video Streaming'.
The only topic that to me was not properly covered is P2P. It was expecting more on this especially since P2P is mentioned on the subtitle. But that's a small detail of an otherwise great book.
