My Secret Fishing Life Review

My Secret Fishing Life

Mr. Lyons, whose books (both edited and written) fill a significant portion of my fly fishing library, has written a very personal book.
The title is accurate at many levels. I doubt that many of us
would share so much about our personal lives - or that we would be able to do so with such candor and joy.
Mr. Lyons description of the travels (and travails) of a special copy of Sparse Grey Hackle's Fishless Days, Angling Nights is worth the price of the book.
Fishing in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty between morning appointments is an incredible story (especially to this former New Yorker ... the Hudson off of NYC was dead in the 60's & 70's).
I never seem to find any time to fish. With this little book, I have a guide of how to find (or take) a little time here and there for fly fishing. Thank you, Mr. Lyons, for your guide to blending avocations with vocations.
Mr. Lyons sold his publishing company recently. May he and his family enjoy many years of post-publishing / editing repose and adventure. We may be lucky enough to have a second volume: perhaps a guide for the next twenty years?

My son bought me this book for my birthday and I have completely enjoyed it! It is a very good read, entertaining and very informative.
As the authors point out, we are missing some very good fishing because of our bias and misconceptions. As they point out...the Freshwater Drum (Sheephead)is a sought after "game fish" in the southern states...and a "rough fish" in the north. Same fish! AND....the Freshwater Drum is related to the saltwater drum and the Redfish that fisherman spend BIG $$$ catching!
Full of interest facts and history (who knew native Americans used the ear bones from the freshwater drum as currency? And how similar that bone is in the fish...as it is in humans!).
If you like to fish for the "big tug" ....or even for food fish....you should read this book.
Tips on bait fishing, lures and fly fishing!

Gierach has a wit and a love for nature like no one I have ever read. Every story he tells is not only an incredible experience, but most of the time a lesson well learned. As I read along, I found myself wanting to be standing streamside with John,A.K.,and the rest of the boys. Although Gierach seems to have strong opinions, he doesn't come off as "I'm right cause I wrote the book." He is more of, "Here's what I think, you decide for yourself." Thanks John, keep em coming.

A Matter of Life and Death: Hunting in Contemporary Vermont Review

A Matter of Life and Death: Hunting in Contemporary Vermont

This was an enjoyable anthropological look into modern deer hunting culture in Vermont. Having grown up inside this culture I found Marc Boglioli's insight as an 'outsider' well rounded and welcome, humanizing a traditional way of life that many people who don't hunt simply don't understand.

American hunters occupy a remarkably complex place in this country s cultural and political landscape. On the one hand, they are cast as perpetrators of an anachronistic and unnecessary assault on innocent wildlife. On the other hand, they are lauded as exemplars of no-nonsense American rugged individualism. Yet despite the passion that surrounds the subject, we rarely hear the unfiltered voices of actual hunters in discussions of hunting. In A Matter of Life and Death, anthropologist Marc Boglioli puts a human face on a group widely regarded as morally suspect, one that currently stands in the crossfire of America s so-called culture wars. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Addison County, Vermont, which took him from hunting camps and sporting goods stores to local bars and kitchen tables, Boglioli focuses on how contemporary hunters, women as well as men, understand their relationship to their prey. He shows how hunters attitudes toward animals flow directly from the rural lifeways they have continued to maintain in the face of encroaching urban sensibilities. The result is a rare glimpse into a culture that experiences wild animals in a way that is at once violent, consumptive, and respectful, and that regards hunting as an enduring link to a vanishing past. It is a book that will challenge readers hunters, non-hunters, and anti-hunters alike to reconsider what constitutes a morally appropriate relationship with the non-human residents of this planet.

I was rather surprised at how quickly my order was filled and sent. I had expected it to take 2 or 3 weeks longer but I received the book much earlier. It's nice to be surprised like that.

Fishing: A Guide to Fresh and Salt-Water Fishing

I have owned several editions and copies of this book, going way back to the first edition when I was 9. I used it to become one of the best fisherwomen in our family.
That first edition book got lost in my travels, so I got the new edition for my older daughter to use it for a ready reference for fishing tips when on trips. She is 25 now and is a good fisherwoman like her mother. That book eventually got lost too, so I got another new edition for my youngest daughter of 12 and also for myself so I can learn how to fish on the Southeast Coast of the United States.I am 50 now and still take the book with me whenever I go fishing in the Pacific Northwest as a ready reference on fishing rig set ups.

The Compleat Angler (Oxford World's Classics) Review

The Compleat Angler (Oxford World's Classics)

There is a reason why this work is still in publication. Across the centuries Izaak Walton communicates his enthusiasm for the sport of fishing. I met Mr. Walton in a Later Renaissance lit class, but I wanted to renew the acquaintance in a less formal setting. For a time travel vacation with a spot of fishing The Compleat Angler is perfect.
Don't read it in a hurry. A page here and a page there. It was written for advice and for enjoyment.

The greatest classic of angling literature and a unique celebration of the English countryside, Izaak Walton's IThe Compleat AnglerR was originally published in 1653 and first appeared with Charles Cotton's continuation in 1676.No book, apart from the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer, has been more often reprinted. This illustrated edition, with an Introduction by the novelist John Buchan, has been expanded and revised by John Buxton.About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. I felt like I was right there, underwater with Luke Dodge. Goldblatt is a great story teller and he really brings to life, the amazing spearfishing, scuba diving and travel adventures of his protagonist, Luke. This book is more well rounded (plot driven)than your average dive/spearfishing book . It is a true coming of age story, complete with adventure, challenges, love interests and triumph over difficult odds. I would reccomened this book to anybody who wants break from the norm and take a mental vacation.

Live Bait Fishing: Including Doughbait & Scent (The Freshwater Angler) Review

Live Bait Fishing: Including Doughbait and Scent (The Freshwater Angler)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife bought me this book for Christmas, and it helps to reaffirm what I have believed for years: Live bait will always, ALWAYS, outfish artificial lures. If you have a jig that isn't drawing attention, hook a minnow, mealworm, or nightcrawler on it, and the results will probably change quickly. This book goes into a lot of the water temperatures and conditions to take into consideration when using live bait, but I have come to believe, at least in the southern US, there is no time when live bait isn't effective. This book will convince you of the same thing. It's an easy read with lots of pictures, and the print is plenty big enough. Excellent book for beginners, veterans, or live bait doubters.

Every kid who ever started fishing probably tried to catch a panfish with a worm. That setup has been the tried-and-true method for generations. There are other kinds of live bait that work just as well; maybe even better in some conditions and for certain fish. In addition to the chapter on Worms & Leeches, this book covers Baitfish, Insects, Salamanders & Frogs, Crustaceans and Other Natural Baits (such as salmon eggs and clams). Complete information on how to catch and keep these baits is followed by sections on how to actually use each live bait type. New on the freshwater-fishing scene in recent years is the use of dough baits and scents. Which one to choose, plus how and when to use each is fully explained. Equipment is discussed in detail: hooks, bobbers, sinkers, rods, and reels. The authors suggest many tips for using different kinds of equipment in various fishing locations and situations. The final chapter matches common freshwater fish species with the best kind of live bait to use, depending on where the fish are and what time of year it is.

You basically have to have this one in a bucket to transport or a lot of water spills out. I could transport the cheaper one in the car or boat without much of a problem. This one spills it out of the added side vents. Not much fun cleaning up the water. I'm going to try and return this one and get the cheaper model like I had.

Plano Liqua Bait Storage Bottle Review

Plano Liqua Bait Storage Bottle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have several of theses and they are convenient, but Plano needs to make some improvements. The container will leak if you don't screw the lid on REAL tight. The gasget needs to be improved in some way. Then after you screw it on so tight, it's hard to get off.
Another improvement needed is with the tweezors that come with the kit. They are not effective. The bait slips out of the grip very easy. I took a Dremmel tool and made cross cuts in the jaws to rough them up and made the ridges a little sharper. It really helped. Otherwise, use your pliers. They work better.
