My Secret Fishing Life Review

My Secret Fishing Life

Mr. Lyons, whose books (both edited and written) fill a significant portion of my fly fishing library, has written a very personal book.
The title is accurate at many levels. I doubt that many of us
would share so much about our personal lives - or that we would be able to do so with such candor and joy.
Mr. Lyons description of the travels (and travails) of a special copy of Sparse Grey Hackle's Fishless Days, Angling Nights is worth the price of the book.
Fishing in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty between morning appointments is an incredible story (especially to this former New Yorker ... the Hudson off of NYC was dead in the 60's & 70's).
I never seem to find any time to fish. With this little book, I have a guide of how to find (or take) a little time here and there for fly fishing. Thank you, Mr. Lyons, for your guide to blending avocations with vocations.
Mr. Lyons sold his publishing company recently. May he and his family enjoy many years of post-publishing / editing repose and adventure. We may be lucky enough to have a second volume: perhaps a guide for the next twenty years?

Fishing for Buffalo: A Guide to the Pursuit and Cuisine of Carp, Suckers, Eelpout, Gar, and Other Rough Fish Review

Fishing for Buffalo: A Guide to the Pursuit and Cuisine of Carp, Suckers, Eelpout, Gar, and Other Rough Fish

My son bought me this book for my birthday and I have completely enjoyed it! It is a very good read, entertaining and very informative.
As the authors point out, we are missing some very good fishing because of our bias and misconceptions. As they point out...the Freshwater Drum (Sheephead)is a sought after "game fish" in the southern states...and a "rough fish" in the north. Same fish! AND....the Freshwater Drum is related to the saltwater drum and the Redfish that fisherman spend BIG $$$ catching!
Full of interest facts and history (who knew native Americans used the ear bones from the freshwater drum as currency? And how similar that bone is in the fish...as it is in humans!).
If you like to fish for the "big tug" ....or even for food fish....you should read this book.
Tips on bait fishing, lures and fly fishing!

Even Brook Trout Get The Blues Review

Even Brook Trout Get The Blues

Gierach has a wit and a love for nature like no one I have ever read. Every story he tells is not only an incredible experience, but most of the time a lesson well learned. As I read along, I found myself wanting to be standing streamside with John,A.K.,and the rest of the boys. Although Gierach seems to have strong opinions, he doesn't come off as "I'm right cause I wrote the book." He is more of, "Here's what I think, you decide for yourself." Thanks John, keep em coming.

Dances With Trout Review

Dances With Trout
Average Reviews:

You don't have to be a fly fisherman to enjoy Gierach, though it does help. When he waxes ecstatic over bamboo rods, or explains how the Green Drake mayfly (Ephemerella grandis) is differentiated from its cousins, E. doddsi and E. flavilinea, perhaps only a fisherman can understand exactly why this is so important.
But reading Gierach isn't something you do to learn about the technique or the science of fishing, or how to select a rod, or how to cast. He's more about the philosophy of fishing, about why we are willing to stand in the middle of a cold stream wearing silly clothes and waving a stick over our heads. He's the ultimate Trout Bum, to quote an earlier book, a man for whom there really is no other life, and who has made a modest living for years just celebrating this life. And of course he does this in a wonderfully witty way; no jokes, just a lot of observations that will still make you smile the umpteenth time you read them.
"Dances with Trout" is not just about trout fishing, or about fishing, for that matter. The "Scotland" chapter doesn't have much to say about how to fish for salmon; "Fool Hen" is about grouse hunting, and "In the Woods" is about still hunting for deer.
What ties all these stories together is Gierach's feeling of comradery with his hunting and fishing pals, and even more so, a real connection with the outdoors. In a time when for many, "outdoor sports" means something like racing through the woods in a snowmobile, tearing up the peace and quiet of a lake in a jetski or "four wheeling", Gierach writes about the simple pleasures of being outdoors and absorbing the world around you.

I was rather surprised at how quickly my order was filled and sent. I had expected it to take 2 or 3 weeks longer but I received the book much earlier. It's nice to be surprised like that.

Live Bait Fishing: Including Doughbait & Scent (The Freshwater Angler) Review

Live Bait Fishing: Including Doughbait and Scent (The Freshwater Angler)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife bought me this book for Christmas, and it helps to reaffirm what I have believed for years: Live bait will always, ALWAYS, outfish artificial lures. If you have a jig that isn't drawing attention, hook a minnow, mealworm, or nightcrawler on it, and the results will probably change quickly. This book goes into a lot of the water temperatures and conditions to take into consideration when using live bait, but I have come to believe, at least in the southern US, there is no time when live bait isn't effective. This book will convince you of the same thing. It's an easy read with lots of pictures, and the print is plenty big enough. Excellent book for beginners, veterans, or live bait doubters.

Every kid who ever started fishing probably tried to catch a panfish with a worm. That setup has been the tried-and-true method for generations. There are other kinds of live bait that work just as well; maybe even better in some conditions and for certain fish. In addition to the chapter on Worms & Leeches, this book covers Baitfish, Insects, Salamanders & Frogs, Crustaceans and Other Natural Baits (such as salmon eggs and clams). Complete information on how to catch and keep these baits is followed by sections on how to actually use each live bait type. New on the freshwater-fishing scene in recent years is the use of dough baits and scents. Which one to choose, plus how and when to use each is fully explained. Equipment is discussed in detail: hooks, bobbers, sinkers, rods, and reels. The authors suggest many tips for using different kinds of equipment in various fishing locations and situations. The final chapter matches common freshwater fish species with the best kind of live bait to use, depending on where the fish are and what time of year it is.

Storm WildEye Live Sunfish 02 Fishing Lures Review

Storm WildEye Live Sunfish 02 Fishing Lures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This lure looks so lifelike and the hooks are set up in such a way as to lose very few fish, why would I not purchase this item. I received it fairly quickly and upon arrival noticed a few things.
1) It is made of plastic, which I knew prior to purchase, but I didn't realize how light it would be. This made casting... interesting.
2) The packaging looks like it was done by a 5 year old. Some of the tails were actually stamped into the packaging.
3) The tails on just about all of the lures were deformed in some way. I bought two (3) packs and two of the six lures looked as pictured.
I was so excited to try the two "good" ones once on the water. It was the first thing I reached for in my tackle box.
It was when I retrieved my first semi-cast that something felt a little off. There was no resistance as I reeled the lure in, also it was returning sideways much like a real bluegill when hooked. I dipped the line in the water directly in front of me to see what sort of action it had in the water and to my surprise, it had none! No tail movement what so ever. I tried with the other one too and got the same result.
I am by no means finished fiddling with this lure. I plan to insert a pin style weight and bend a few pieces to get it to swim straight. I use 8-10lb test and will drop down to maybe 4 or 6lb. As for the tail, I think I will try to heat and form it until I get some action out of it.
If you decide to buy this lure I hope you have better luck. This review is for the Storm Wildeye Live Sunfish, I have not tried other storm products and cannot comment on their performance.
I will do a followup review if my modifications are successful.

I used this out in a pond and i caught two monstrous rainbows. Although two of the lures got torn to shreds because its made of a soft material, it performed great. I only fished with this lure once and it was only for about half an hour. It was a great buy and i will buy more.
