The Coach: Creating Partnerships for a Competitive Edge Review

The Coach: Creating Partnerships for a Competitive Edge

Short - easy to read and filled with concrete "how-to" information on a collaborative process for facilitating change in someone's performance. The author's 8-step model is based on 20 years research into the "best practices" of successful business performance managers. Very common sense and practical.

The Coach is the first reasearch based book written on the topic of Coaching.
This book is about the coaching process and the skills, behaviors, courage, and values leaders need in order to evoke employee committment and motivation. This is a "how-to" book with a lot of specifics on what to say and how to handle different coaching situations. The authors provide a unique close-up account of a true-to-like manager who discovers the obstacles and challenges of helping an employee ove a difficult time. This leader ultimately discovers the keys to coaching success and averts a careet-threatening disaster.
Many books on leadership focus on general theories, while others treat the topic of coaching in a shallow and oversimplified view. From thirty years of research and observations, Steven J. Stowell, Ph.D. has collected data that provides a rich and deep understanding of this topic.

Positive Coaching: Building Character and Self-Esteem Through Youth Sports Review

Positive Coaching: Building Character and Self-Esteem Through Youth Sports

I coach volleyball in grade school and junior high school, and I usually get the "B teams" (the leftovers who are not as talented as the girls on the "A" team.) Therefore, if there ever was a crying need for a book on how to coach these types of athletes, this book more than served its purpose for me. Actually, this book had a positive effect on me since it saved my coaching career.
Don't get me wrong, though, this book will turn around any coach's career whether he has an A or a B team. I coached a group of 13 and 14 year old softball players the year that I purchased this book. At the beginning of the season, the only team these girls could beat was themselves; in fact, that was primarily the reason they were losing was the fact that they were beating themselves! Well, after one mediocre game, I sat the girls down on the bench and instead of reading them the riot act, I took to heart a suggestion by the author. I emphasized all the positive aspects of the game they played just to show these girls that they were capable of doing some positive things. I did this after each game from then on, win or lose. Wouldn't you know it, these same rag tag girls lost the last the last game of the season: the city championship game by one run (to a team that annihilated them by 12 runs in the first game of that season.) This was an example of positive coaching, and I've used everything in this book to my advantage to become a successful POSITIVE coach. Thanks Mr. Thompson for turning my career around!

From Coach to Awakener Review

From Coach to Awakener
Average Reviews:

This book serves two audiences: 1. Coaches with a basic knowledge of NLP who would like to take their coaching practice to a whole new level and 2. Students of NLP who are looking for a fresh and organized presentation of NLP techniques.
Not all NLP techniques are covered, nor is this book to be considered an overview or introduction to NLP.
Dilts notes that, in the past, coaching has been focused mainly on improving behavior performance through careful observation and feedback. More recently personal, executive and life coaching has evolved to provide support on a number of different levels: environment, behavior, capabilities, beliefs and values, identity and spirituality. Each level has a different focus and requires a different approach and set of tools.
Using the neurological levels, Dilts explains how your coaching style must adapt to each level: environment (caretaker or guide), behaviors (coach), capabilities (teacher), beliefs and values (mentor), identity (sponsor) and spirituality (awakener).
Each level is clearly explained together with a suggested set of tools and techniques. Many of the techniques are familiar to NLP practitioners, and there are a few new ones as well. For the student of NLP this approach helps answer an often heard question - how do I know which technique to use?
My only disappointment is that occasionally, Dilts presents a story to illustrate his point. However without a reference to its origin, you are not sure if this is fact or urban legend.
If you are serious about your coaching practice or a student of NLP, then this is a "must add" to your bookshelf.

Coaching is the process of helping people and teams to perform at the peak of their abillities. It involves drawing out people's strengths, helping them to bypass personal barriers and limits in order to achieve their personal bests, and facilitating them to function more effectively as members of a team.Historically, coaching has been focused toward achieving improvement with respect to a specific behavioral performance. This involves promoting the development of that person's behavioral competence through careful observation and feedback. In recent years, the notion of coaching has taken on a more generalized and expanded meaning. Personal coaching, executive coaching and life coaching provide support on a number of different levels: behaviors, capabilities, beliefs, values, identity and even spirtual. These new and more comprehensive forms of coaching-executive coaching and life coaching-can be referred to as capital-C- Coaching. Large C Coaching involves helping people effectively achieve out comes on a range of levels. We guide people to learn about new environments, for instance; coach them to improve specific behavioral competencies; teach them new cognitive capabilities; mentor empowering eliefs and values; sponsor growth at the identity level; and awaken people's awareness of the larger system or field. This book defines the types of contexts and situations which require the capital C Coach to focus on one of these roles - caretaker, guide, coach, teacher, mentor, sponsor, awakener - and provides a specific toolbox for each role. ULTIMATE CRUSH: Waseda University Rugby, Leadership and Building the Strongest Winning Team in Japan Review

ULTIMATE CRUSH: Waseda University Rugby, Leadership and Building the Strongest Winning Team in Japan
Average Reviews:

I was delighted when Kiyomiya-san (then 39 years old) agreed to my producing this translation of his bestselling Japanese book published in February 2006. Make no mistake, he is a brilliant rugby coach. Already in only his first season as a Top League coach (2006-7) he took Suntory Sungoliath up to second place in the league from mid-table in the previous year. In his second season Suntory Sungoliath won the Top League final, beating close rivals Sanyo Wild Knights 14-10. (Sanyo got revenge in the All-Japan championship.)
Kiyomiya is a superb man-manager and thinker about the game, and he also handles the media very well. (He admits that he uses the media to influence his own players and the opposing team and coach. In this way he is like Eddie Jones, who has been advising Suntory for several years, and has never been averse to a bit of mental sparring with his opposite number before big games! Ask Sir Clive...;-)
Mr. Kiyomiya is a true professional, intelligently combining the most advanced scientific methods with non-scientific motivational techniques. He is meticulous in his analysis of games, and rigorous in his assessment of players. He always has the enjoyment of the fans at the forefront of what he tries to do, and the "Kiyomiya effect" has galvanised the Top League and made it so much more exciting. Crucially, he considers himself a fan as well as a coach, and he is determined to regain for rugby the popularity and status it once had in Japan.

101 Positive Athletic Traditions: Building Positive Team Legacies

There are a lot of good ideas in this book. The only drawback is, most of the ideas are geared toward high school or college programs, so many of them are not useful for most coaches.
For example all 3 ideas for "welcoming new team members" involve freshman-senior interaction. While this could be adapted to veteran-new player interaction, in these and many other examples, there are aspects that do not "translate" over.
Still, I really like the book, and the ideas that are for universal are very good!

Now in an updated second edition, Physical Dimensions Of Aging by the team of Waneen W. Spirduso, Karen L. Francis, and Priscilla G. MacRae is a textbook resource and reference especially for students and professionals in need of the latest research concerning the physical process of aging and the practical ramifications for anyone working with the elderly, particularly in the field of health care. Chapters discuss changes physical structure, capacity, and endurance; motor coordination and motor control; psychosocial relationships; what distinguishes "physically elite" older adults; and much more. Charts, graphs, and the results of the most recent studies fill this serious-minded text, which avoids an excess of overly technical medical jargon despite its focus upon professionals and field trainees. Highly recommended.

It provides students and professionals with what they need to know about physical aging in order to conduct clinical research and to work with clients and patients. In doing so, it retains its landmark status as the definitive reference on aging.

Moreover, Physical Dimensions of Aging, Second Edition, focuses less on explaining the measurement techniques and research design and more on the outcome of the studies and their practical implications for everyday living. This approach will enable professionals and students to do the following:

-Understand the physical aging process and its effects on other dimensions of life.

-Apply the latest research in working with adults and the elderly.

-Become more effective in their professions. The structure of this new edition is more conducive to learning and features the following:

-Chapter objectives

-Key terms

-Sidebars of capsule research studies

-Testimonials, vignettes, and other tidbits that tie the research information to the real world

-Review questions to assist students in synthesizing and remembering the information

-Short lists of recommended reading for those who want to pursue the topic in more detail

-A glossary at the end of the bookThis second edition is organized into five parts. Part I provides an introduction to aging, to the field of gerontology, and to the research process for studying individual differences. Part II describes the physical changes in structure, capacity, and endurance. Part III overviews the factors related to motor coordination, motor control, and skill learning for older adults. Part IV addresses physical–psychosocial relationships, including health, exercise, and cognitive function as well as health-related expectations of quality of life for older adults. Part V highlights physical performance and achievement especially to showcase the results from consistent effort and hard work of physically elite older adults as inspiration for others.

At a time when many people are telling older adults what they can't do, professionals should be telling them what they can do. Physical Dimensions of Aging, Second Edition, will equip professionals to do so.

I have been racing in open water swims for over 40 years in hundreds of different competitions. I think I have read most of the books published on open water swimming in the US, the UK and Australia.
Steve Munatones' book is probably the best resource available for anyone who is interested in open water swimming. He includes useful focused information on the tactical, strategic and technical challenges of open water swimming which is extremely useful for anyone from a fledgling triathlete to a medium distance open water swimmer who wants to step up to the challenge of marathon swims. Open water swimming is very different from pool swimming and racing outside the predictable confines of a swimming pool has challenges that constantly surprise new participants. I haven't seen any other publication with the wealth of specifically useful information that Steve shares here to help shorten the learning curve for new swimmers and which contribute useful insights to more experienced swimmers.

I finally had the chance to read John Howard's latest book and thought it had helpful tips for both the novice and seasoned rider... I'm a long time cyclist and sometime racer on local SoCal teams and found the book to have some interesting insights; not only on the bike but a complete section on what to do off the bike for better performance and less injury. John outlines a complete program that includes both strength and flexibly exercised to complement training out on the road... John certainly has done it all and even today will be found in the front group of the legendary `Swami's ride" that's more like an abrading comet... Stacked with top riders and a sprinkling of pros, to see John in his 60's hang, he is doing something right...

Tom Graham and Rachel Graham Cody have done a masterful job of writing a book that will be enjoyed by anyone with either an interest in basketball or an interest in what transpired in the civil rights movement after World War II. If the reader like myself has an interest in both subjects then this book will be among the most interesting books written on the subjects. Written by highly educated and intelligent people the authors have approached the subject with diligence, energy, and passion. While nearly every sports fan knows of Jackie Robinson, few people know of Bill Garrett and his journey from a segregated grammar school in a small Indiana town to national acclaim as an All American at Indiana University. I loved this book.

The Dynamic Path: Access the Secrets of Champions to Achieve Greatness Through Mental Toughness, Inspired Leadership and Personal Transformation Review

The Dynamic Path: Access the Secrets of Champions to Achieve Greatness Through Mental Toughness, Inspired Leadership and Personal Transformation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found this book to be very, very helpful. Before explaining how so, I want to caution potential purchasers.
Much of this book is chock full of snippets about well known athletes. Although the successful from other fields get some coverage, the authors' love for athletics rings strong. I bought the book based on the cover touting it as a book on great leaders...and quickly became discouraged with the plethora of snippets on athletic success, most of them not even involving team sports (where is the leadership in non-team competition?).
As I read on, I also became troubled that the author's examples are very, very heavily male dominated, not surprising in view of his love for non-team competitive sports, but very surprising in view of the author being a super star recruiter in the business world where female power (and success) has become very, very evident.
The good news is that the book ends very strong. Chapter 8 on "Finding a Calling" is alone worth the purchase price. (Readers who want to learn more on this subject will enjoy Brad Swift's excellent book on living a "Life on Purpose.") Astute readers will likely correlate that the failure to find a calling explains the many second life failures that the author serves up (but does not explicitly connect the dots).
Personally I found this book to be very, very helpful, notwithstanding the aforementioned shortcomings. I am currently finishing extensive research on personal peak performance in preparation for the upcoming taping of my Peak Performance program. I found the author to be very thoughtful on the subject and to have done a good job researching some of the work that is out there on the subject. I got great value by testing my own hypothesis against his theories of personal peak performance. We are not totally in synch but the mere exercise of comparison has greatly enriched my own thinking. And for that, I am grateful to an author whose personal transformation appears to be a work in process (as it is for all of us). I am looking forward to this prolific author's upcoming writings as I fully expect that he will write an even better book as he continues to discover the incredible power of passionate purpose and its impact on champions, male and female, in all fields of endeavor.

The authors talk about the game and equipment in terms that someone with no prior knowledge can easily digest. They resist the over-usage of jargon and where they do use jargon, they explain what they are talking about in a way that doesn't leave the reader sitting there scratching his/her head.
