Fitness Weight Training - 2nd Edition (Fitness Spectrum Series) Review

Fitness Weight Training - 2nd Edition (Fitness Spectrum Series)

I was looking for a book that would lead me step by step through a program for toning and weight loss. This book has it all. Instructions, starting points for weight on each exercise, suggestions of warm up and cool down, etc. There are three main programs outlined in the book, one for toning, one for strength training and one for body building. There is also a detailed section on how to set up your own weight training program.
I bought this book because I wanted a program to follow without paying for a personal trainer. It works! I was an absolute beginner and have been at it now for about 30 weeks - the results are great.

Now in an updated second edition, Physical Dimensions Of Aging by the team of Waneen W. Spirduso, Karen L. Francis, and Priscilla G. MacRae is a textbook resource and reference especially for students and professionals in need of the latest research concerning the physical process of aging and the practical ramifications for anyone working with the elderly, particularly in the field of health care. Chapters discuss changes physical structure, capacity, and endurance; motor coordination and motor control; psychosocial relationships; what distinguishes "physically elite" older adults; and much more. Charts, graphs, and the results of the most recent studies fill this serious-minded text, which avoids an excess of overly technical medical jargon despite its focus upon professionals and field trainees. Highly recommended.

The physical aging process progresses every day—and so does our understanding of it. Physical Dimensions of Aging, Second Edition, will keep students and professionals up to date on the outcomes of the latest research studies and their implications for the elderly in the real world. Physical aging affects us cognitively, psychologically, socially, and spiritually. The book discusses how people age physically and how this aging affects other dimensions of life.

The second edition of Physical Dimensions of Aging has been updated to integrate research findings on physical aging from more than 100 different journals in myriad fields, creating interdisciplinary coverage on the topic. It provides students and professionals with what they need to know about physical aging in order to conduct clinical research and to work with clients and patients. In doing so, it retains its landmark status as the definitive reference on aging.

Moreover, Physical Dimensions of Aging, Second Edition, focuses less on explaining the measurement techniques and research design and more on the outcome of the studies and their practical implications for everyday living. This approach will enable professionals and students to do the following:

-Understand the physical aging process and its effects on other dimensions of life.

-Apply the latest research in working with adults and the elderly.

-Become more effective in their professions. The structure of this new edition is more conducive to learning and features the following:

-Chapter objectives

-Key terms

-Sidebars of capsule research studies

-Testimonials, vignettes, and other tidbits that tie the research information to the real world

-Review questions to assist students in synthesizing and remembering the information

-Short lists of recommended reading for those who want to pursue the topic in more detail

-A glossary at the end of the bookThis second edition is organized into five parts. Part I provides an introduction to aging, to the field of gerontology, and to the research process for studying individual differences. Part II describes the physical changes in structure, capacity, and endurance. Part III overviews the factors related to motor coordination, motor control, and skill learning for older adults. Part IV addresses physical–psychosocial relationships, including health, exercise, and cognitive function as well as health-related expectations of quality of life for older adults. Part V highlights physical performance and achievement especially to showcase the results from consistent effort and hard work of physically elite older adults as inspiration for others.

At a time when many people are telling older adults what they can't do, professionals should be telling them what they can do. Physical Dimensions of Aging, Second Edition, will equip professionals to do so.

Gorilla Suit: My Adventures In Bodybuilding Review

Gorilla Suit: My Adventures In Bodybuilding

"Gorilla Suit" is the name Bob Paris gives his set of fabulous muscles.
I really, REALLY enjoyed this book! We get the run down from Bob starting off as an awkward teenager finding the weights room in his high school gym, unused and dusty when he goes looking for a fan for a teacher. He lifts a few weights, likes the way he feels then starts training. From there we read about his trip to LA, to the 'big gyms' like World Gym and Gold's, where Arnie et al are working out. It is really is a rags to riches story, as when he first goes to LA he is sleeping in the back of his car.
Bob Paris takes on the titles of Mr LA, Mr California right up to his dream title, Mr Universe, the same spot Arnold Schwartzenegger occupied.
Most interesting in this book is Bob's struggle with Joe Weider -apparently the man, his companies and IFBB (international Federation of Body Building) were all inter-related and competitions quite political. Bodybuilders survived on endorsement contracts from supplement companies, and at the time Weider's companies had a monopoly on the industry and bodybuilders. Amazingly too, most bodybuilders took copious amounts of drugs and steroids, until I read this book I naively had no idea.
And Bob's story is personal too, his struggle with the discipline of maintaining his 'gorilla suit', relationships and being true to himself in an industry that isn't -is fascinating.
Definitely a keeper.

Mastering Cycling (The Masters Athlete Series) Review

I finally had the chance to read John Howard's latest book and thought it had helpful tips for both the novice and seasoned rider... I'm a long time cyclist and sometime racer on local SoCal teams and found the book to have some interesting insights; not only on the bike but a complete section on what to do off the bike for better performance and less injury. John outlines a complete program that includes both strength and flexibly exercised to complement training out on the road... John certainly has done it all and even today will be found in the front group of the legendary `Swami's ride" that's more like an abrading comet... Stacked with top riders and a sprinkling of pros, to see John in his 60's hang, he is doing something right...

Strength Training for Women Review

Let me start off by saying that this book is available for free online, which is where I have read it, and I intend to buy it so that I have a reference copy. (I almost appreciate it being available free enough to buy it just because I support that).
I have recently joined a health club, and really wanted to try weight training. I had been feeling very intimidated, and this book has pretty much fixed that. I'm the type of person who likes to have a lot of information and think things through thoroughly, especially when I am a little nervous about them. All the background information about the different types of training and exercises really helped me to feel comfortable, though I can see how it might not seem relevant to those who have already been training for a while, or who are not the information junkies that I am.
The sample training plans and the descriptions and images of each exercise were probably the most helpful part of this book. I was able to read it, practice some of the movements I wasn't sure about at home without weight, and then hit the gym. I'm completely a beginner, and the level of information in this book was just what I was looking for to get me started since I can't really afford to hire a trainer.
