Living an Uncommon Life: Essential Lessons from 21 Extraordinary People Review

Living an Uncommon Life: Essential Lessons from 21 Extraordinary People

I didn't know what to expect from the book or the author.
I saw the subtitle about lessons from 21 extraordinary people and feared it might be some exercise in genuflecting to celebrity. That is a most subversive notion in this day and age of conformity where aspiring to wealth seems the highest goal.
John St. Augustine's name didn't mean much to me either. I'm an east coast guy and though he was a succesful radio talk show host that was mostly in the middle of the country - plus, I'm not much of a talk show guy. I find the radio stuff so jarring and controversial that it leaves me uncomfortable. Would that his show had been on everywhere.
Then I cracked the spine. What a book. It is bold - it respects its readers and doesn't try and sell them on three ways to achieve success or 2.5 ways to live a get thin and achieve a lasting tan - because it challenges readers not to go to the comfortable wings (left or right) but to dig down deeply in their own lives. The book challenges our humanity and confronts us with the reality of our mortality and does with passion and enthusiasm and gusto because John St.Augustine looks at life and shouts, "YES!" It can be a bit intimidating because it is so radical.
At various points I found myself reading and thinking to myself that I could live the kind of rich, full life he writes about here -punctuated with stories of famous (and anonymous) people he has known - and wanting to live that kind of life but realizing that to do so I had to follow his most serious lesson...that living takes work and determination but that it is so worth that work.
I could go on and on in writing but frankly I am more interested in now going back through some of the chapters - like the one in which he talks about learning the power of living in the moment through the late Chicago Bears star Walter Payton - to learn what I have already forgotten.
I've never written an Amazon review before and perhaps I haven't done the best job - my enthusiasm may be getting in the way of my writing - but don't hold that again this uncommon book. It is remarkable and must, must, must be read.

At the lowest point in his life, living in a motel room with his wife and two children, John St.Augustine undertook a journey of a thousand miles, walking from northern Michigan to Chicago—and back—a journey that became one of discovery, and a chance for St. Augustine to reinvent himself.

It was on this walk that the inspiration was born for a radio show that would be a positive voice in a world saturated by cynicism. Upon his return, despite having no prior radio experience, a local station gave him a chance: one hour a week for five weeks . . . .

Ten years and 5,000 guests later St.Augustine is living his dream, and, like The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Living an Uncommon Life offers a roadmap for reaching your own dreams.

St.Augustine discovered a pattern in the lives of the exceptional personalities with whom he has crossed paths including Oprah Winfrey, John Denver, Walter Payton, Wayne Dyer and others. Each of them refused to let negative circumstances dictate their life. Instead they found the inner strength to achieve great things. St.Augustine insists we all share these remarkable traits and in Living an Uncommon Life he offers powerful principles for unlocking your strengths and achieving your personal best.

I bought this book on a whim... or maybe not. If you've landed on this page, I suggest you buy this book because whatever brought you this far, with this amazing book, it will expand beyond your wildest expectations! That's what happened to me. Not reading this book but, DOING this book has been the most enormous life changing expedition I've ever been on, through, in, and over. Or maybe it's the perfect culminating tool I needed to make sense of the many ups and downs and ins and outs so far in my journey. The meditations and guidance Peggy Rometo shares while you read through this book, are amazing catalysts for serious life change and revelation.
I recommend this wonderful spirit journey of a book hands down and I know I will read/do it many many many times more. It's more of a handbook on accessing your intuitive gifts, or figuring out your life's path, or understanding and utilizing all of the 'lessons' your life experience has brought and so much more. I have read umpteen books in this category and have been a 'seeker' for longer than i can remember and this book has had the most profound effect on me of them all. Peggy Rometo is beyond awesome!
ENJOY!

Paula: My Story So Far Review

Paula: My Story So Far

Being a runner, I love reading about runners, and their stories. Paula Radcliffe comes across in this book with frank honesty. She doesn't sugarcoat it, and tells it straight. She comes across confident, but human, like just another person. Granted, she is an elite athlete that has accomplished much in her life, but unlike some autobiographies, she doesn't sit there and tell you how great she is.
I learned a lot about Radcliffe herself in the book, along with a lot of interesting things about running, injuries, dealing with injuries, the triumph of her victories, the agony of her defeats, her drive to always give it her all, and that she is quite funny at times throughout the book.
Also, for those of you that don't know, she is asthmatic and if you know someone that has asthma and struggles with it, get them a copy of this book. It will inspire them.

Paula Radcliffe has been hailed as one of the finest female distance runners of all time. Her amazing run of record-breaking victories in 2002 and 2003, including smashing the women's world marathon record in Chicago and then again in London, showed an athlete at the peak of her powers. Such was her dominance that a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens seemed almost a formality. But as the world watched, and a nation held its breath, that historic race ended for her on a dusty curbside instead of the podium. Paula has become a passionate spokesperson against drug cheats and, inspired by her own battle with the condition, is widely admired for her patronage of asthma charities. And even though Athens in 2004 proved to be more Greek tragedy than triumph, her popularity remains undimmed. Her remarkable life story of highs and lows is fully chronicled in this fascinating and inspiring autobiography.

It's great to know that someone still writes the kind of books that made me fall in love with sports and reading. McCoyd's inspirational and true tale of George Foreman's rise from the Houston ghettos to the Heavyweight Championship of the World is exciting, funny, and chock full of fantastic photographs. This book is highly recommended for children, teens, and boxing fans of all ages. "To Live and Dream" is a real knockout!

In 1974, boxer George Foreman lost the heavyweight championship of the world. In 1994, at age 45, he won it back. Filled with action and photographs, this is the easy-to-read biography of one of America's greatest heroes. Despite some low points in his life, George Foreman has always succeeded in turning himself around. He transformed from teenage thug to Jobs Corpsman and Olympic gold medalist in the 1960s. Then, after becoming heavyweight champion of the world by routing Joe Frazier in 1973, George lost his title to Muhammad Ali in a stunning upset. Foreman was humiliated and eventually quit boxing, but he found happiness by going home to Houston to become a preacher and help underprivileged boys. George returned to the ring in 1987 and, at the age of 45, miraculously regained the heavyweight crown by knocking out Michael Moorer on November 5, 1994. In addition to winning fights, the two-time champion uses his great sense of humor to win people's hearts. Overweight throughout his comeback, George good-naturedly confronted fat jokes by saying he was on a "sea food diet -- whatever I see, I eat." With his shaved head and large stomach, Foreman looks like a cross between Santa Claus and Mr. Clean. But his image of himself is so good, he named all four of his sons "George."
