The One Year Daily Insights with Zig Ziglar and Dr. Ike Reighard
This is a devotional book with dates on each page, so you can start it any time, and any year. Each page has a topic, one scripture verse, a reading, two questions, and a quote by various speakers and public figures.
Here are examples of questions and quotes:
Do you want to be the kind of wise person who has a profound influence on others? Why or why not?
Are you willing to pay the price? Explain your answer.
What's the best news you've ever received?
How do you respond to criticism?
What are the common temptations you face everyday?
How can you overcome bitterness?
What are some recurring situations that cause you to run away in fear or fight back in defiance?
Who are the people you trust to tell you the truth?
What are some things you tend to worry about?
"To see His star is good, but to see His face is better." D.L. Moody
"To disregard what the world thinks of us is not only arrogant but utterly shameless." Cicero
"The only question Jesus ever asked God is `Why have you forsaken me?' This is the same question most every believer asks at some point in their spiritual journey." Ike Reighard
"He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life." Ralph Waldo Emerson
There is a small space at the bottom of each page, so you could write a couple of thoughts in the book if you wanted to as you go through the daily reading. Good train reading. Also would be a nice springboard for a Christian accountability group to go through together and discuss the various topics.

The Law of Attraction in Action: A Down-to-Earth Guide to Transforming Your Life (No Matter Where You're StartingFrom)
Average Reviews:

I have read 100's of very poor books on the Laws of Attraction in the last few years. I started reading books about goal setting, mind control and success principles in 1985. I have used what I learnt from my extensive reading, coupled with academic qualifications, business and psychology experience, to create a consulting company, teaching seminars to corporations in strategic thinking, marketing, goal setting and business development. I also use the principles to help individuals, by guiding them as a Life Coach, teaching people cognitive methods to help goal set and enhance their lives beyond what they could do on their own. As such, I read as many books as I can on a variety of subjects to enhance my knowledge. I can honestly say, that with all that experience, this book will help everyone who reads it to set better goals and achieve more in their lives, than they would think possible. It is a GREAT BOOK.
As the Laws of Attraction have come into vogue, through films like The Secret, a large number of books have been published with LOA in their title. I have read virtually every one of them and have found many get lost in the voodoo principles that think you can sit, think happy positive thoughts, visualise wealth and as if by magic and serendipity, vast fortunes will miraculously come your way. A whole generation of people have gotten frustrated, when this does not happen for them and they do not understand why the LOA seems not to work for them.
This book answers so many questions, regarding the LOA and why it can fail in so many ways, with so many people. It addresses many issues in its 212 pages. It looks at State, Intention and Action steps. It addresses old negative mental programming and if you download the workbook, will guide you through all the work you will need to do to get into the right state to allow the LOA to work.
Unlike so many other LOA books, this one puts so much emphasis on your own role in your own success. It uses every strategy you could want, from Kaizen to the Sedona Method (A Brilliant Method to get rid of Emotional Negativity) to EFT to get the Laws working for you by releasing past negativity. The workbook helps set new goals and new empowering beliefs that will propel you forward for greater success.
This really is a GREAT BOOK........BUT 212 pages could have been cut down. The first half of the book looks at State, Intention and Inspired Action. It is tedious and so full of utter waffle and waffle and waffle. I speed read and so ignored so much of the self absorbed waffle. The second half is better and it is obvious someone got a grip on the writing style.
If you can ignore the waffle in the first half, this is a great book for anyone who wishes to succeed in life and business with strategies that will help everyone achieve so much more from their lives.

An engaging, accessible guide to personal empowerment. The phenomenal success of The Secret points to the great hunger for answers, hope, and change. But what if books like that seem a little too "out there" for you? Enter Deanna Davis, whose down-to-earth approach stems from her own change of heart (it happened at the Olive Garden). In this fun, quirky, and decidedly straightforward guide, Deanna shares the science, strategy, and stories of how to create your ideal life using a universal key to success called the Law of Attraction, whether you seek health, wealth, happiness, success, or anything else, large or small. The book blends cutting-edge research, practical techniques, and a conversational, light, funny tone to make the information both meaningful and memorable. Like a talk by your favorite college professor, it provides brilliant concepts in a downto- earth manner—an uncommon blend of wisdom, creativity, inspiration, and practical strategies that work.

I have read and loved a couple other books by this Author. I mean I really liked them so when I saw this new work I snapped it up. I'm very disappointed. I can't say it is an awful book obviously other people on here love it. But what I found was chapter after chapter of the same message packaged in a different way. When it said 50 Simple Truths to Transform Your Attitudes and Actions into Results, that is what I expected. To me I found a few simple truths and no actions for results. But then again I'm not big on optimism or pessimism per se, I think being a positive realist works best. Just not for me.

Profiles of Genius: Thirteen Creative Men Who Changed the World Review

Profiles of Genius: Thirteen Creative Men Who Changed the World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has a deceptive title that suggests that it is objectively focusing on the concept of genius. I think that if you were to ask the average person to start naming the smartest people in the world, you would end up with names like Einstein and Mozart, Michelangelo and Bobby Fischer. Even given that Landrum was going for people who have displayed genius in the last forty years, I'm sure that there are people who rate higher on an IQ test than the thirteen men Landrum has chosen.
And so, this book is much more a measure and study of what goes into business success than it is a blueprint for genius. By identifying thirteen men and thirteen characteristics that can be emulated for financial gain, Landrum is giving business advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, and I wish that the title of the book reflected that.
Aside from that, I'm not sure that the book does a good job of identifying thirteen separate personality traits that drive success. For one thing, many of the traits seem to overlap or even seem somewhat synonymous. The personality traits of being competitive, driven, and passionate are extremely similar, if not identical. For another thing, all of the personality traits are described in glowing, positive terms. Where are the traits of ruthlessness, greed, and insecurity that also drive some of the market forces that drive success?
I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, and I realize that this book can serve the valuable function of inspiring those who undertake the very difficult job of being an entrepreneur. I started and ran my own business for seven years, and realize that there is some sound business advice in this book that can help someone to make their own dreams come true.
But I don't want anyone to think that this book is something that it's not. It's not a book about genius, nor is it a scientifically sound piece of research. I'd recommend it to business owners or inventors, but not to those who are truly interested in the nature of the human mind.

The story of creative and innovative behaviour is about change", says author Gene N Landrum. "In this case it is about thirteen iconoclastic individuals who have demonstrated a unique ability to deal with change in the world and redefine it for their own purposes."Landrum calls these individuals the "change masters," entrepreneurial geniuses whose innovations have had a profound influence on modern society: Steven Jobs (Apple Computer), Fred Smith (Federal Express), Tom Monaghan (Domino's Pizza), Nolan Bushnell (Atari), William Gates III (Microsoft), Marcel Bich (Bic), Solomon Price (The Price Club), Howard Head (Head Ski), William Lear (Lear Jet), Soichiro Honda (Honda), Akio Morita (Sony), Arthur Jones (Nautilus), and Ted Turner (CNN). Each of these business giants was motivated by what Landrum describes as an "innovisionary personality", which drove them to follow a unique inner vision of success and gave them an inviolable belief in themselves."Profiles of Genius" demonstrates, through thirteen dynamic examples, that future entrepreneurial success in a global marketplace will depend on technological innovation, adaptability to change, intelligent risk-taking, and competitive drive.

The Encore Effect: How to Achieve Remarkable Performance in Anything You Do Review

The Encore Effect: How to Achieve Remarkable Performance in Anything You Do
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Reading THE ENCORE EFFECT by Mark Sanborn kept reminding me of something my father used to tell my brothers and me when we were kids growing up. "Boys, never settle for doing a good job when you have the ability to do a great one." My father is gone now but his sage words live on.
There is so much to like about this book. That statement my father used to make really sums up what this book is about. We human beings have a propensity for doing just enough to get by or on our good days, doing a good job. For me the point was really driven home at the conclusion of the 6th grade when my history teacher handed me my 4 part essay with a note that said, "See me after class." I got 3 100's and a 95, so I was certain that he wanted to praise my work. What I got instead was a butt-chewing for not putting forth that kind of effort all year long. He said in 20 years of teaching it was one of the best essays he had read, so why didn't do that kind of work every day?
Between my dad's sage advice and the reprimand of Mr. Simon, my 6th grade history teacher, the message stuck, but it is reinforced here by Sanborn's book. The beautiful thing about this book is, there is not a person alive these lessons don't apply to. I started to say, "If you work for a living, you need to read this book", but that is not all inclusive. This is also for students, stay-at-home parents (yes, I know, they DO work), and even someone who's current job is looking for a job, there is always a way to try a little harder, to give just a little more effort. That's what the encore effect is all about.
Written in typical Sanborn fashion, this is a quick and easy read that is packed with wisdom. You will never regret the few hours it takes you to read this book.

Pressured Parents, Stressed-Out Kids: Dealing with Competition While Raising a Successful Child

I've read a number of books on this topic and "Pressured Parents, Stressed-Out Kids" is by far the best. Dr. Grolnick and Ms. Seal sympathize with the pressures we parents are facing and don't seek to blame us the way certain other authors do. They offer real solutions instead of just lecturing us on the evils of overscheduling and competition. I also appreciated their emphasis on balancing autonomy with structure. They aren't in favor of permissiveness, a refreshing attitude for this type of book. Highly recommended!

I've read more than one of Pat William's books, and I'm never disappointed. This latest, a tribute to Coach John Wooden is no exception. It's full of anecdotes from former players, coaches, and friends of the late UCLA legend.
But in reality, this book is a tribute to Coach Wooden's father. On virtually every page Williams relates how the coach would talk about his father and how he wanted to be the kind of person his Dad was. Coach Wooden learned 7 principles that shaped his life..all from his father.
A moving and inspirational read, highly recommended!

Raising Kids for True Greatness: Redefine Success for You and Your Child Review

Raising Kids for True Greatness: Redefine Success for You and Your Child
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are few books that I have read that have hung around my mind and ruminated within my thoughts as much as Tim Kimmel's Raising Kids for True Greatness. This book is one of the most worthwhile reads available today. Kimmel's brilliant thesis dismantles the success illusion (wealth, beauty, power, fame) and simplistically brings us back to the heart of the gospel message: "True greatness is a passionate love for Jesus Christ that shows itself in an unquenchable love and concern for others." The qualities that identify a great life are humility, gratefulness, generosity, and a servant spirit. The brilliance in this is not that Kimmel had to mine through the scriptures for truths found only Greek lexicons; the brilliance is these truths are boulders that you can't help but stumble upon if your crack open any page in the Bible.
Have you ever heard someone conclude that the wealthy are blessed by God? Does that mean the lion's share of our population is not blessed? Our cultural filter has caused us to misinterpret prosperity with blessing. We equate prosperity, comfort, and a life of ease with God's blessing. Jesus did not say to the rich young ruler, "Just be happy that you have been blessed." Instead, Jesus redefined the man's life purpose and in the process showed that wealth has nothing to do with a life or true greatness. Our Christian culture has been tainted by our ivy-league mind set. Somewhere along the way, money, power, and fame has saturated the gospel that is preached in America; we see it on TV, we invite the wealthy Christian to speak to the business group, Christian CEO's retire to board positions for churches and para-church organizations. Often, the reason is the size of the checks they can write instead of the spiritual insight they can provide. Donald Miller, whose writing has captured the heart of new believers, writes in Searching for God Knows What "If I weren't a Christian, and I kept seeing Christian leaders on television more concerned with money, fame, and power than with grace, love, and social justice, I wouldn't want to believe in God at all." And we wonder why our kids have such a dispassionate faith.
This is where Kimmel shines. He addresses (us) everyday moms and dads and helps us disarm the success illusion that has worked its way into our parenting paradigm. Kimmel writes, "If you aim your kids at anything less than greatness, you'll set them up to miss the whole point of their lives." He succinctly shows us the difference between success and greatness with a 9/11 illustration: "As the successful rushed down the stairs of the World Trade Center, the truly great ran up." He enunciates his point by saying, "when it's time to bury our dead, we mourn the loss of those who were successful, but we celebrate the memory of those who were truly great." Kimmel then gives us the practical advice to "live large by thinking big." Abundant thinkers empower their kids to master fear and joyfully rest in God's limitless power.
Finally - the best part. Kimmel does not just give us a neat simple formula to raise truly great kids, instead, he shares with us concrete mandates found only in scripture that must transform the heart of the parent before they can penetrate the lives of our kids. This book is a great read for anyone - parents, singles, or grandparents. Raising Kids for True Greatness is a book whose time has come; a book that calls us to live out the great life Christ died to redeem.

Sometimes greatness is measured by possessions or power and parents become preoccupied with raising "resume" and "pedigree" children. Yet true greatness is an internal evidence of attitudes and a heart known for humility, compassion, graciousness, and enthusiasm. Author and speaker Dr. Tim Kimmel identifies the three most critical and life-changing decisions that will make the difference. According to Kimmel, preparing your children to determine what they will do (their mission), who they will do it with (their mate), and who they will do it for (their master) is the greatest gift you could give them. Raising Kids for True Greatness will expose the shallow wisdom of the world, giving parents a road map to guide their children toward rich lives of eternal value and significance.

The Green Beret in You: Living with Total Commitment to Family, Career, Sports and Life Review

The Green Beret in You: Living with Total Commitment to Family, Career, Sports and Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Green Beret In You: Living with Total Commitment to Family, Career, Sports, and Life" by John Giduck with Special Forces Sergeant Major John A. Anderson (RET.) is one of the best books I've read in a long time, and I read a lot of books. I have to agree with Brad Thor's quote on the back that it is "the essential guide to manhood, and if John Wayne had left a how-to-manual on being a real man, this would be it." In fact, the endorsements by Thor and Lt. Col. Dave Grossman helped influence my decision to purchase the book. That and the fact that I worked with SF a few times when serving with the 82nd Airborne Division and in South Korea with the 2nd Infantry Divison, and I've always respected those who wore and wear the green beret.
Right up front, this book was written for men. It's not that women couldn't learn from this book, or live by some of the principles, but the fact is Special Forces are composed of men, and this book is aimed at how men should be. Like Thor said, it is a manual on being a real man. There is a reason John Wayne made a movie about the Green Berets, and that because they shared his conservative values of honor, integrity, and having the courage to do what's right. That is exactly what this book is about. The book uses the principles and values of those serving in Special Forces as the model for living. It uses the Green Beret as a model to live life to your fullest. I loved the part where the person was shocked that the author didn't follow sports on television because he was too busy living to stop and watch others playing.
The book first explains the making of a Green Beret and the character of a Green Beret. Then in part two, it focuses on Green Berets in everyday life and how you can build the Green Beret in you through principles such as being a man, not hiding, and not sugarcoating things. (And so many more!) The fourth chapter addresses the workplace and how living and working with the values of the SF soldier will make you stand out in any corporation or workplace. Next, the authors focus on team, and the importance of teams in our lives.
Part Three of the book delves into Green Beret Commitment with chapters on commitment to marriage, commitment to family, commitment to career, commitment to sports, and commitment to life. I can't stress enough how important the concepts in these chapters are and how by living this way a person will undoubtedly be not only a better person, but a much happier and successful one.
The final part consists of some rules for everyday life. Ten short rules, but they mean a lot of lived by. The book then shares the Special Forces Code and concludes with a brief Conclusion that motivates the reader to live with the courage and values taught in this manual.
Like I said, I read a lot of books, and there are some that I do go back to for research when I'm writing, but there are very few that I will read cover to cover multiple times. This book has just earned a spot on that short list. This is a book I will read again to continuously remind myself of how I should be living and to help me teach others to live with the Warrior's Edge.

I have been waiting for this book for awhile and might have had my hopes a little too high...and full disclosure I am a lifelong SC and Seahawks fan...this book is an easy read and was very motivating...I am constantly reading these types of books and I always keep a hi-lighter, notepad, and pen nearby and this book gave me all kinds of nuggets...my rating however was lowered from a four to a three star (i rarely will hand out a five) because of the simple fact that Pete doesn't coach the reader on how to map-out and plan their own philosophy...I love Pete...his energy, his mannerisms, and his coaching style and I have kept a lot of articles about him over the years because he always gives the reader/listener some great motivating ideas and tools and i love having those as a reference...this book offers the same however, I bought it to help me shape and actually create my own philosophy for business/coaching and the book left me a bit disappointed with no chapter on creating and formalizing my own philosophy...again, motivating book...some great ideas and quotes, however, it left me wanting just a bit more...on a side note...I hope Amazon pulls down all the reviews on here that are just posted to trash Pete Carroll...I buy quite often from Amazon and use these reviews to help me decide on my purchases...obviously those of you "reviewing" have issue with Pete so here is a suggestion - start a blog and share your opinions on there as much as you would like, but don't affect the rating integrity of Amazon...
