As far as books addressing the pursuit of trout, by far the most wonderful, elusive and exciting fish on earth, this work is pretty good. Now before I get started, I do have one bone to pick; that being the title of this work, in specific the portion of the title that states "The Complete Guide to Catching Trout with Flies, Artificial Lures and Live Bait." Now while the book may be good, it is if you note only 143 pages long and that includes an introduction and index. Folks, I have over five feet of shelf space devoted to nothing but books about trout fishing. I do not want to break any bubbles here, but a "complete" book on this subject never has been written, does not exists and in all likelihood never will! I took stock and figured up that I have been trout fishing for exactly 58 years now. I have fished all over the United States and in five different countries. I have been hanging out with trout fishermen and women all my life. I can truly state that as far as knowledge of catching this particular fish (the only one I pursue), I am as ignorant as a new born chicken and a stupid as a fence post. I cannot remember the last time I fished any stream or lake anywhere or any time, that I did not learn something new. Now all that being said...and forgive me for my little rant....
This particular book is quite good and quite nice. As noted above it does a very adequate job of describing various pieces of equipment, fly fishing techniques, spinning and bait casting, hooking, landing and playing the trout, techniques for special waters, catch-and release and understanding, somewhat, the mental abilities of the trout and salmon. This work is loaded with first class photographs which are a pleasure to view within themselves.
The author has given us a very good rundown and taken a very close look at much of the equipment available today; its uses and maintenance. I will state that the author has focused on rather high end stuff and some of the items mentioned and discussed are better for show than go. That is okay though, the neophyte needs to be aware of these things.
Directions for such things as casting, playing the trout, landing the trout, different essential knots, methods of working a stream, winter versus summer and spring fishing, etiquette on the trout stream and so much more are plainly written and quite precise. Mercifully, the section of bait fishing is quite short and the emphasis is more on flies than anything else. Other than the very, very young just starting, any older person, i.e. adult, caught using live bait for trout should probably....well, never mind.
Bottom line is that this is a very nice book and holds some very useful information and probably should be on your bookshelf if you have any interest what so ever in the subject.
