This is my 3rd treadmill in 35 years, the 1st one after 15 years of trusty service did not move with us. Our second one is now 20, the belt is showing its age. still functional but after 20 years we decided to purchase a new Treamill. Now for the review and advice, NO you do not get what you pay for, you pay for what you need.
We use the treadmill most days of the week, neither of us are large(hey we use the treadmill) and are average height. Our typical speed is 4 to 4.8 mph and combined daily use about 1 1/2 hours
We defined our needs based on requirements. Our previous treadmills were called budget models by the sales people, not as sturdy or well built as the higher priced models we were told and a lot more money. Our experience proved other wise and with that in mind we purchased the ProForm 690 LT and are pleased. B If money was not an object a $5,000 Life Form would be great, but more than $4,000 better, No.
For our needs the Proform fits our needs and we do not have buyers regret. If you are a runner and a large person then size and a high build quality does matter and be prepared to spend over $2,000.
The other thing I should mention is noise. We tested the treadmill before we purchased it feel our sturdy it was and how much noise it made, and we found both to be acceptable. Of course nowadays most people use their I-Pods so noise to the user is not a big deal, nor is the treadmill an issue in our living situation.
In short the homework and research needs to be done and if you match your needs with the product you can keep some weight in your wallet and take it off in other areas.
For the price if it only lasts 5 years its worth it.

Transform your fitness routine with the ProForm Power 690 treadmill. The 690 offers many of the same features as other top-of-the-line treadmills--including a 2.75-horsepower Mach Z commercial-plus motor, a shock-absorbing running deck, and tons of workout programs--but also includes a few high-tech extras, such as a built-in sound system and support for the iFit Live experience. As a result, the treadmill can keep you motivated in whole new ways. The primary purpose of a treadmill, of course, is to help you get fit, and the Power 690 excels in this area. The treadmill's Mach Z motor is powerful enough to hold up to heavy use, making it ideal for families or folks who run for long periods of time. The 690 also includes four preset performance workouts and four preset distance workouts to help you meet your goals. The performance workouts are each designed by a certified personal trainer, and teach you to run faster, jump higher, and get stronger. The distance workouts, meanwhile, challenge you with1-mile, 5k, 10k, and half-marathon distances. As an alternative, you can use the QuickSpeed and Quick Incline controls to instantly adjust the speed from 1 to 12 miles per hour and the incline from 0 to 12 percent.
To keep you comfortable during your workout, the Power 690 includes a shock-absorbing running deck that reduces the impact on your joints by 15 percent as compared to road running, along with a 20-by-55-inch running belt that encourages long, natural strides. The treadmill also includes an innovative CoolAire workout fan, which keeps you cool so you can exercise longer and reach your goals faster. The sophisticated fan is built right into the console--just like the AC in your car--allowing you to quickly adjust the settings.
It's the built-in sound system and iFit Live compatibility that really distinguish the Power 690 from the competition, however. The sound system includes an Interplay music port that lets you plug your iPod or MP3 player into the console. With the iPod resting on the console shelf, it sits within easy reach of the user and leaves the controls right at your fingertips. The sound system itself produces a broad range of frequencies and rich, equalized sound, so you can rock out with the volume on high. The iFit Live system, on the other hand, is built to enhance your entire workout from start to finish. iFit Live technology--which requires a separately sold iFit Live module--connects your treadmill wirelessly to the Internet. Once you've signed up to iFit Live, you can run on trails all over the world as if you were outside. iFit Live lets you customize your own fitness program, receive automatic workout downloads, manage your profile online, and work out with Jillian Michaels, the tough-as-nails trainer from TV's The Biggest Loser. You can also add competition to your workout with 5k races against your Facebook friends. Other iFit Live features include a nutrition and activity tracker, motivating text messages and emails, and downloadable workout videos.
To top it off, the 690 is equipped with a SpaceSaver design that lets you fold the deck vertically for easy storage. The treadmill--which accommodates weights up to 300 pounds--carries a lifetime warranty on the frame and a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
