Klean Kanteen 12 oz Stainless Steel Sippy Review

I have always loved the idea of the Avent system, because of the interchangeable sippy spouts. My kid is a biter; the spouts of his sippy cups invariably get badly scratched up and therefore need to be replaced. With most sippies this means replacing the whole cup, which gets expensive! The Avent system eliminates this problem; however, their sippy cups leak like mad (the lids unscrew WAY too easily) and the bottles are made from nasty leaching plastic. The Via system is #5 plastic but too clunky and cumbersome to use as a sippy.
The Klean Kanteen is the perfect solution: safe stainless steel and the convenience of interchangeable Avent sippy spouts. I was beyond thrilled when I learned that it existed.
The adapter cap has two pieces: the part that screws into the bottle, and then a piece that is EXACTLY like the white screw ring from an Avent bottle (except that it's black, of course, and just a little bit bigger). This means three things:
1. ANY Avent sippy spout or nipple will fit in it. Both the white and the green spouts are meant for babies first learning to use a sippy cup; this is probably why many toddlers get frustrated trying to drink from the spout that comes with this bottle. There is a "toddler" spout available that is much easier to drink from.
2. It will leak if you over-tighten it. DON'T screw it as tight as it will go or it will leak.
3. The Avent dome caps fit. (I am surprised that nobody seems to have noticed this before!)
(It seems like the Avent handles should fit, but they don't, or at least I can't seem to get them on quite right - they cause pretty excessive leaking. It's a shame because that would make this cup absolutely perfect for younger toddlers. For my 2-year-old, though, it's just fine without handles.)
I plan on getting a neoprene cover for it to keep the contents cold (and because my son saw the one I have on MY Klean Kanteen and wants one for himself!) but other than that, this sippy is pretty much perfect. I love it!

Klean Kanteen Flat Cap/Polypro Review

Klean Kanteen Flat Cap/Polypro

This cap is worthless. It made my water taste bad (whereas the original 'sport cap' never did), so I removed the silicone o-ring and put the cap in the dishwasher, thinking it had some coffee residue on it or something.
After I took it out of the dishwasher, I could hear water sloshing around _inside_ of it! It appears to be completely impermeable - there are no apparent holes in it. Nevertheless it has water inside of it, with no evident way to get the water out.
The 'sport cap' that came with my Kleen Kanteen is hollowed out, like an upside-down cup - there is no bottom. This low-profile cap is hollow but has a bottom - it has a continuous outer surface like a fishing bobber or something.
Clearly they need to work on their quality-control. Avoid this cap like the worthless POS that it is.

Klean Kanteen Reflect Stainless Steel 27 Ounce Water Bottle with Bamboo Cap Review

Klean Kanteen Reflect Stainless Steel 27 Ounce Water Bottle with Bamboo Cap

I just received the Reflect in Mirrored Stainless Steel. It is beautiful -- an adjective I never thought I would use to describe a bottle. As my title says, this looks like a bottle Apple would have designed. It is the same shape as the regular 27 oz. Kleen Kanteen bottle, but the polished stainless steel exterior gives it a high-end, simple, and clean look. The cap on the Reflect bottles with their stainless steel shell and bamboo top are different than the caps on the other Kleen Kanteen bottles and, aesthetically, a great match for the Reflect bottles.
After an initial washing of the bottle, I filled it up and tested it for leaks. Despite turning the bottle upside down and shaking vigorously no water leaked out, which should be expected. The top screws on and off very easily and quickly -- just one full turn to seal or open the bottle. As it states on Kleen Kanteen's website and with the material that came with the bottle, the bottle itself can be put in the dishwasher. But, the stainless steel cap with the bamboo top should not be cleaned in the dishwasher or submerged in water in order to prevent water from getting inside and creating sanitary issues.
I love the fact that the product is almost entirely made of stainless steel, other than the small bamboo round piece on the top of the cap and the one silicon ring around the interior part of the cap to prevent leaking. From an ecological standpoint, it is probably a good thing the product contains no paints, even eco-friendlier ones. I drink a lot of water throughout the day and am using this bottle in place of a glass so I expect the finish to hold up well. If you use this water bottle for more active uses then the polished finish may not be the best choice as I imagine it will show scratches and scuff marks more than the Reflect Brushed finish or the regular Kleen Kanteen stainless steel finish.
I was using a Sigg bottle for many years, but recently learned that their bottles -- at least the older ones -- actually contain BPA, which they chose to conceal from their customers. In addition, the coating on the inside of the neck of the bottle was coming off, which made me concerned that I might be ingesting small pieces of the coating material. Given the issues with Sigg, I decided to discontinue using my Sigg bottle and boycott the company's products. The fact that I can put the Kleen Kanteen bottle in the dishwasher is a nice benefit over the Sigg bottles, which need to be cleaned by hand. Another benefit of the Reflect bottle is the one turn on/off of the cap compared to several turns of the Sigg to seal or open the bottle. I think I will be very happy with the Kleen Kanteen Reflect bottle and will probably purchase one of the regular stainless steel bottles for outside use.

Klean Kanteen Wide Cafe Cap by Klean Kanteen Review

Klean Kanteen Wide Cafe Cap by Klean Kanteen

Why listen to me? I carry two 64oz KKanteens of water into work with me every day, and switch this top between them as they are being consumed throughout the work day. I've owned this product for about a month now and use it 6 days a week.
It consists of two pieces: the base, and a disk shaped cover that inserts at the top that turns 90 degrees to either expose a drinking port, or obscure it. This is NOT spill-proof. If the container tips, fluid will spill out.
Drinking without spilling any on you is easy if you use the right techinique. No need to elaborate it here... try it with water first and you'll get it right after a few tries.
It works, BUT: There is a problem with this design. The rotating disk insert traps fluid between it and the base beneath it. If you do not frequently wash these parts with soap and water AND pop off the top so the area between them can dry, it will get a fetid smell to it as bacteria grows. The disk is not designed to be regularly removed from the base; I have to squeeze the plastic insert that holds it on and pop the thing off. I have a feeling that eventually, the part that holds the rotating disk on is going to break from doing this. I have no other choice though as it cannot dry out without being seperated. Once it does break it can still be used as a sipping lid with a hole that cant be closed.
This cap is easier to drink out of by far than having to remove and reattach the screw on lid the containers ship with but it could definitely be improved. I will be looking for another sippy-cup type lid for my Kleen Kanteens, but it wont be one of these the second time around.
Conclusion: Better than nothing but needs improvement.

Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle Review

Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Last month I bought a 40oz Klean Kanteen bottle and a 33oz Sigg bottle. In the end I prefer the Klean Kanteen.
Both bottles are very light and look good. The Sigg is lighter, but not so much to really matter. Sigg wins easily in the looks department with different artwork to choose from and the bottle I have has a nice textured powder coat finish compared to the KK basic look and smooth surface.
Sigg uses an epoxy to protect your water from the aluminum and tells you not to use the bottle for long term storage. Could be a bit worrisome not knowing what's in the epoxy and the possibility of aluminum contamination. I have not noticed a metallic taste from either bottle drinking straight unfiltered tap water. I prefer the stainless steel of the KK just because it's probably on the safer side.
The bottles are both lightweight and made of thin metal. I haven't dented either but I have been very careful with them. Both feel like they would dent quite easily. I have not scratched either bottle and the paint on both looks like new after daily use from work to the gym.
The KK bottle has the cap threading formed into the neck of the bottle while the Sigg uses a metal ring insert in the top of the bottle to thread the cap onto. Some people have complained that the Sigg's threaded insert is sharp, but I have not had this problem. The KK is more comfortable to drink from though. Also the wide mouth of the bottle makes it easy to put ice cubes in, which you can't do with the Sigg unless you have very small ice cubes.
I have the loop cap on both bottles. The Sigg I really have to twist the cap on tight so it doesn't leak. The KK cap seals quite easily and has never leaked. The KK also uses a thicker thread size and is easier to screw the cap onto because of this.
Some people are complaining about sweating. On a hot day with the bottles filled with ice cubes both will sweat, but plastic bottles will also.
If I was going to spend that much money on a water bottle again, I would go with Klean Kanteen without a second thought. The only advantage of the Siggs is the exterior design.
Update Dec 09: Over a year of use now and I have stopped using the Sigg due to their older bottles do in fact have BPA. Something they said it didn't have, so I won't buy another bottle from them again since it appears they were lying before. They will replace the older bottles, but you have to pay shipping.
I have 2 Klean Kanteens and both have held up well. Some minor scratches and dents, but still look quite good.

Frequently Asked Questions Why is the sports cap made of plastic and not stainless steel? Your teeth. Klean Kanteen chose polypropylene #5 because it has no known leaching characteristics and is softer if you hit a bump on the trail. If you'd rather avoid plastic altogether, a stainless steel screw-on lid is available as an accessory.
Can I put hot liquids in my Klean Kanteen? No. Klean Kanteen bottles are single walled and not for use with hot liquids. Warm beverages can be used at personal comfort level. The single-walled construction allows for more volume and the option to put your Kanteen on a flame.
Can I put my Kanteen in the freezer? We do not recommend it and it will void the one-year warranty against manufacturer defects.
Can I put my Kanteen on a stove? In a pinch, the Kanteen can be placed on fire or a stove. Beware not to melt the plastic lid or burn yourself.
What is stainless steel? Stainless steel is an iron-containing alloy made from some of the basic elements found on earth: iron ore, chromium, silicon, nickel, carbon, nitrogen, and manganese. Properties of the final alloy are tailored by varying amounts of these elements. There are more than 57 stainless steels recognized as standard alloys on the market. Klean Kanteens are constructed from high-quality, sanitary-grade 304 stainless steel which has a low nickel content. Stainless steel has excellent resistance to stain or rust due to its chromium content. Stainless steel is easy to clean, durable, inert and sanitary.

Klean Kanteen Poly Sports 2.0 Cap Review

Klean Kanteen Poly Sports 2.0 Cap

I was almost ready to quit using my cap because it was embarassing to use,no matter how slowly and quietly I tried drinking from it!
But, I sent klean kanteen an email asking if they had any suggestions, not really expecting an answer...but I did get an email back with the answer I hoped for. The tip they gave me WORKED, and I absolutely love the cap now, and it doesn't make a sound!
So, here's what they sent to me....I hope it works for you too.
From Klean Kanteen: "I do have some tips for using the sports caps. They are our most popular cap, as well as our most complained about. It is the air pressure that makes that funny noise.
Sports caps were originally designed and used with plastic drinking bottles, and with those, we have the ability to squeeze and change the pressure coming in and out. Because you cannot squeeze stainless steel, air has a more difficult time getting inside and making the water flow out. We had to alter the design to include an air vent in the cap to allow the pressure to escape. This air vent does have a silicone plug and valve; it helps to keep the water in.
1) The trick is to "gently" tighten the sports cap onto kanteen. Not over tightening the cap allows the silicone vent to function more quietly by relieving the vacuum created inside the kanteen.
2) Try to keep the air vent facing up toward your nose. This way, it keeps the vent facing upward so it is backed by air, not by the liquid.
3) Only tilt a little and then suck through the spout.
Try those tips, and in most cases they will take care of the noise and air flow issues.
The silicone white dot is the air vent; if you take it out it will leak. There is some natural variation among the silicone stoppers and the noise that you hear is air moving past the silicon. Some people who use the bottle specifically for sports and working out will actually take out the silicone stopper and find that they don't mind the drip as a trade off for the increased flow.
The little plastic cover of the sports cap, is a sanitary cover. It is not intended to bear the weight of a full kanteen, it is just to keep the nozzle klean and safe to drink from.
I hope that helps.... Let me know if you have any other questions.
