Jeffrey Lane scores big with this riveting look at how the sport of basketball has evolved into something many of us do not recognize from it's heyday of the 1980's. It is a fascinating read that will enlighten even the non-basketball fan amongst us.

The true story of basketball lives as much off the court as on the hardwood; it is about politics and race and cultural clashes as heated as a final-four buzzer-beater. This story unfolds in all its gritty and colorful detail in Under the Boards. From the birth of the Larry Bird legend to the ascendancy of a hip-hop-infused NBA to the backlash against bling and the contemporary American game, Jeffrey Lane traces the emergence of a new culture of basketball, complete with competing values, attitudes, aesthetics, and racial and economic tensions.

I loved this book! Initially I thought -- no way would I read a book on Wilt and basketball history. Then, I stumbled across a two page preview in Parade Magazine and thought-this guy can write! Pomerantz' interesting storytelling immediately captivated me. The most compelling for me, a non basketball afficianiado, is how he took me right into the heart of the historical, cultural and race sensibilities through sports in the fifties and 60's and through this truly unparalleled player, Wilt. Add to this, now I have some sports legend history at my fingertips for conversations.

Being a fan of the game but a Knicks fan, I can say this was a decent read about Jordans career. I always had great respect for the man and think he is the best basketball player of all time. This book will let you see in writing what he did over the years. Well put together by the author and worthwhile for anyone even those who are not fans.

Bad Sports: How Owners Are Ruining the Games We Love
Average Reviews:

If you are a sports fan, or a progressive, you can't let this book get by you. I was truly caught flat-footed by Zirin's frozen ropes of insight into why I haven't been as inspired by the games I grew up loving so much--and by his ideas about what it will take to reclaim the game from profit driven owners. As a resident of Seattle, I was impressed how well Zirin tackled the saga of Clay Bennett and his sell out of our city by shipping of our beloved Sonics to Oklahoma. But this book is much more than an expose of rapacious sports team moguls. It is sociological study of sports and its fans that uncovers previously obscured ideas about why people marvel and partake in play. It is a study of urban planning in America and the role of the sports teams and stadiums in the modern metropolis. Moreover, it is a playbook for fans and social activists to make our cities and our teams inspiring once again.

NBA 2K8 Review

NBA 2K8
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
NBA 2K7 was arguably the greatest basketball game ever created. The gameplay was simply no match for NBA Live's gameplay, which was downright horrible. Well, just when I though 2K Sports couldn't make a better basketball game than last years, this game came out. One of the big problems with NBA 2K7 was the graphics. A lot of the players didn't really resemble their real life counterpart. Well, that is no longer the case. 2K8's graphics are the best I've seen yet, and all the players look so realistic that you actually believe that you're out there with them sweating on the court.
Of course, graphics aren't everything, right? Well, 2K8 has even better gameplay than last years. The shot stick still rocks the house, but there are also a lot of new additions to each game you play. After each game, you can watch the top three plays of the game. But that's not the coolest part. After each game, you can watch a highlight real of any player during the game. If you're playing as Kobe Bryant and you score 50 points against your opponent, then after the game you can watch each amazing play made by Kobe during the game. Sweet, right?
Well, this game also has a very fun and very realistic Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. This should keep you busy for hours, and it isn't even a part of the main game. If you're not good a dunking, there is a dunk school that can teach you how to emulate LeBron on his jams. There is also a really cool 3-Point Shootout.
So, if you're debating whether or not you should go with the hoops king 2K8, or try NBA Live 08, then I would HIGHLY suggest you get 2K8. Even though Live 08 is greatly improved upon, it still has a ways to go to catch up with 2K Sports and their basketball genius.

NBA Live 2003 Review

NBA Live 2003
Average Reviews:

EA has gone arcade crazy with NBA Live 2003!
There are far too many dunks, blocks, steals and fast breaks!
The AI is totally unrealistic! Everyone seems to be flying around like Vince Carter, dunking on almost every possession!
This is more like a highlight reel or commercial than a game and it certainly is not a simulation anymore!
NBA Live has turned into Triple Play Baseball!
The entire game seems to revolve around never-ending dunks and animations. People that never dunk or block shots are doing it repeatedly! This looks more like NBA Jam than NBA Live. This is all on so called, exhibition mode. I suppose that on arcade, everyone fly's around non-stop like superman!
PC users had to wait two years for EA to turn a simulation into a slam-dunk contest!
I think the programmers at EASports need to cut down on their sugar intake!
The graphics are pretty good but the coaches look very weird especially Byron Scott of the Nets.
Again, too many dunks, blocks, steals, fast breaks and repetitive animations and no real AI and no realism!
When a 6-foot guards block 7-foot centers, that is really totally out of touch with reality.
It's fun if you like a too fast-exaggerated arcade game but forget about it as a simulation.
Since I want realistic AI in a simulation that reflects reality on planet earth, I am very disappointed!

The latest incarnation of NBA Live has a slew of new features, like freestyle control, which lets you use the right analog stick to express your game with the step-back move. The game also offers triple-threat moves and pass interceptions. There are significant changes to the rebounding logic so players react in a more realistic manner to missed shots. Over 30 new rebounding animations allow for a wider variety of pulls off the glass. Motion capture, which was performed with two to four athletes simultaneously, is used for specific contact situations like post moves, pick-and-roll plays, and drawing the charge.
Enhanced CPU logic and AI allow for more effective fast breaks and open players who can cut to the hoop for scoring opportunities, as well as fine-tuned turbo buttons that afford players an array of in-game strategies. There are enhanced player movements, including dribbling, player-specific signature moves, and more responsive shot blocking. In addition, real NBA coaches roam the sidelines, and there is dramatic camera coverage of in-game and out-of-play sequences. You will hear what it's like to be on the court with all-new player calls, as well as court and arena sound effects. Classic jerseys give players a chance to relive their teams' glory days in authentic gear.

NBA JAM Review

NBA JAM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So, if you are like me and my friends and spent lots of quarters on the original arcade game, this will take you back.
We played the heck out of the older versions on the Sega Genesis, N64, Sega Dreamcast and the odd Xbox 3-on-3 version.
Since Jam went away we switched to EA's NBA Street.
Street was fun, but it was almost became as complicated as a fighting game with all of the combos you needed to do.
This Xbox 360 version is a total remake of the original arcade game. Big Head mode and all.
This isn't a deep game, but there is more to it than just "Play Now", but it isn't NBA 2K11.
So the question is, is Jam worth the full retail price? I would say no unless you are dying for a multiplayer game that doesn't involve a gun or you
are an old school fan like me.
This is one of the few multiplayer games I can play with my son and his friends. Most games, like the Lego series are only two player games.
I rated it four stars because it is a great re-make of a great game.
It plays just like the old arcade machine.
I love the gameplay. I love the graphics and the play by play is fun.
There are some quirks.
The on-line gameplay is broken for now. That is inexcusable. You can't play anyone, I assuming this will be fixed ASAP. (right EA?)
The rosters are not the latest. Miami has Lebron and the Knick have Amare' but Ariza is still on the Rockets.
There is a championship mode which is fun for single player action and they have some unique challenges they call "Re-Mix", but the heart of the game
is just playing with one to three other friends.
This is classic Midway video game. If you have played NBA Jam or NFL Blitz you know the rules, who ever is in last place, they will have the advantage (ala Mario Kart).
This is done so every game is close, it is a fun challenge to try to put someone down by 20.
The computer cheats big time, but there are some tricks you can do to keep the CPU at bay.
The game has some fun rewards that you will earn when playing, for example if your player scores all the points you get a ball hog award.
I have tried most the teams.
I found the surprise player is Arenas on Washington.
So basically, if you are looking for a more arcade like basketball game that is not a sim like NBA 2K11, this might be for you.
If you want something to compete with your friends that will have you all screaming, yelling and insulting each other, this is it.
But if you want a deep single player type game, I would pass on this.
Try NBA Street. It has more to it.
Update: OK, the single player is more fun than I thought.
I am addicted to unlocking every player....
The campaign mode tasks you with beating every team, there are boss battles after
every few matches. This is one way you unlock the legends from the fist NBA Jam (Arcade Version).
For example you have to challenge Spud Webb and Dominique Wilkens or go to Golden State and take on Chris Mullins andTim Hardaway.
If you beat them, you can play them in the multi-player.
Also, it you pull off certain tasks like 10 blocks in a game and such you will unlock more legends.
These Legends are added to the rosters of the respective teams they played for.
So Worthy is now available with Kobe, Lamar and Pau.
i haven't gotten to the main boss battle which looks to be Magic and Bird on the same team.
The hardest team to beat on Hard Mode has been Orlando. Dwight blocks everything and he and Vince Carter dunk really hard.
It is hard to block them.
I have been using Arenas and Minute Bol as my tandem.

NBA 2K9 (Xbox 360) Review

NBA 2K9 (Xbox 360)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What did I do yesterday? I played 2k9 all night! Okay, I stopped for dinner, but that's about it. Remember loading up 2K8 and going "Hmmm...not sure I like it."? Well this is the same way. In 2K8 I initially thought that the animations were too much. That you go to do something and you're out of control while he finishes the animation. This is the same way. There are new animations to get used to. But by the end of the night I was having a ball! You have to get used to the animations.
So, first I'll start with my only downer...Clark Kellogg! I really miss Kenny "The Jet" Smith. Clark is just boring. He says all of the lines that Kenny used to say (I guess he didn't have much original material), but without the flare. He would have made a better commentator and they should have brought someone else in to add the color. But Kevin Harland is still good and Cheryl Miller is neither here nor there.
Game-play's a bit more realistic. There aren't nearly as many slams, and so far the alley-oops seem realistic. And the computer plays much better defense now. You're going to have to rely on a cross-over if you want to get to the hole. I have a tough time getting Iverson's cross-over, but Melo's is sick! It's just a really quick cross-over and as you look up there's a lane to the hole. It looks exactly like Melo's cross, and then his slam looks like his slam...but you better hurry because the lane closes in a hurry as the defense recovers so you've gotta hit it!
The computer controlled players move more realistically this year. They cut and come off screens and set picks on their own instead of just standing around. And if you want to run a play you can turn on "play view", which draws the play on the court for you. Oh, and the defense is smarter this year. If you get too hot with someone the computer will start bringing the double team. Didn't stop me from going for 34 with Melo though!
Also, instead of assigning certain coverages to certain positions, you actually assign a coverage to a player. So when you go to the coverage screen you scroll through all 12 of your opponents players. That way if you had the double team on the power forward because KG is playing, you're not stuck still double-teaming when his scrub back-up comes in. There's also been another coverage setting added, "deny ball". I like to use that on the post players to try and stop the entry pass. I'm not really seeing much of a difference in it so far though.
The graphics and animations are pure! Everyone's shots look like their shots. Melo's free-throw looks correct this year. Oh, and I'm playing from the "Broadcast" view. I tried to play from the 2K view I normally play but they seemed to have flattened it out (the camera's not as high). And then for some reason the transition when you get the rebound and head the other way is kind of stuttery. Basically, if you've seen what they did to the view in Madden this is the same thing. I guess they're trying to show the whole court. I'm actually enjoying being on the side again though. I haven't played like that in years.
When you start playing don't be immediately disappointed. Think back to 2K8 and know that it's going to get better. The graphics/animations are amazing!! Oh, and if you play in Hi-Def make sure you take the time to look at the crowd. It's not the blurry five generic people drawn 20,000 times. Oh, and there's no "fatigue" slider. This year you adjust the "stamina" slider. I'm playing 8 minute quarters and have the stamina set at 44. 44 seems like they tire just a little slowly, but 43 makes them tire too quickly. I think 44 is about right. And I turned all of the fouls and stuff up to 60. So far nobody has fouled out but I do get people in foul trouble (playing 4 fouls per game).
Oh, and during timeouts you can boost one thing for your team (rebounds, defense, etc.). The book doesn't tell you much, but there's an in-game tutorial you'll want to do. It's under "practice", and it lets you learn exactly how to do the everything from the basics to the advanced isometric moves.
So overall...one day in...color me impressed!
WTG 2K Sports!

well I am here to say this game definately does more justice than a 1 star!! With all the capabilities that is offered in the game, how could it be? I enjoyed the game, and actually was suprised by the game play on the PSP, the graphics are more enjoyable than the PS2 version, but I would say the realism it not... in the PSP version, I don't like the fact that it is so easy to make shots, players go to the hole anytime they wish, and it's extremely hard to steal in the game... but like I said, it really is enjoyable to have all those options at the palm of your hand; shot out is added which I have never played before, and it seemed I was stuck on that challenge even before I experienced playing a real game... bottom line is the game is good, damn good for PSP, I just hope EA can make some slight adjustments towards next years edition.

NBA Live 08 Review

NBA Live 08
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
NBA Live has always come in second place to NBA 2K games, atleast to me. Live has always had excellent ideas, but the game has always suffered from sloppy gameplay with little details to the small things that make up a basketball game. Once again, some great ideas carried through with bad gameplay.
There is one aspect I need to discuss first. Passing is TERRIBLE. I know they want to make passing more realistic, but I had Garnett posting up on a defender, right in front of the active players face, and I pressed to pass, and Rondo BOUNCED the ball on the ground hard and it made Garnett jump for it. I mean, honestly, is there a point in that? And sometimes, when I turn on the passing icons, I'll press square or whatever other button I want to pass it to, and my player won't even pass. Sometimes, my player will just throw the ball away when I pass. It's very nervewracking.
Also, foul calling is about stupid. If you run over a defender when you're on offense, it's an automatic offensive charge. Now if the situation is switched, and you're defending, don't hold your breathe on getting a charge. Even when you press the button for a charge, and your player goes in motion, you'll get ran over, but no foul will be called. Half the time, when I get called for a reach in, I didn't even see my player's hand move towards the ball. Half the time, I don't even go for a steal.
Through games, I can't shake the feeling that I'm playing in an arcade. It just feels so fake. The graphics are fine, when I'm the Celtics, I can tell who's Ray Allen, who's Pierce, and who's Garnett, but the feeling of simulation is too strong. When you go for a rebound, the player may not even be that close to the ball, but somehow it lands in his hands. Laying-up is a bit more animated but also looks fake. How can AI lay it up over Garnett and Oden?
Despite the poor gameplay, there are redeeming extras and a deep Franchise mode. In Franchise Mode, you get to go through the NBA Draft (I landed Oden for the Celtics) and hire a coaching staff. They incorporated a new rumor central, that's kinda like a news feed but not exactly news yet. You can read and research all the speculation of signings, trades, releases, and others. You can have your assistant work on players to make them better, and have him set up practices, events, and days off to help fatigue and team chemistry. You can check what players have to say about the team to know what changes are to be made. It's the best kind of Franchise I've ever played, honestly.
There are other extras like the All-Star Weekend and Fiba World Championship. The All-Star weekend is fun, where you can play the rookie challenge, the 3-point shoot-out, the all-star game, or the celebrated Slam Dunk contest. I have to admit, the Slam Dunk contest is hard but fun. You can go to the Slam-Dunk School, but it really doesn't help you with your dunk any. The Fiba World Championship brings other countries' basketball teams in to the picture, who you can also play with in exhibition games.
Overall, the Franchise Mode and the All-Star weekend dominate this game. For me, though, I'd rather have more realistic in-game play than added features. If an NBA game added the graphics and gameplay of NBA 2K, and the Franchise Mode of Live, I would never put my controller down. But since that isn't gonna happen soon, I think I'd rather stick with NBA 2K. But if a deep Franchise mode is what you want, then go for this one. For now, I'll pass.

Well I waited awhile to review this game until I got a real feel for it.
I must say it took me about a week to really appreciate the subtle changes that 2k10 has made.
1) The oops off the glass to a team mate or to yourself is a plus... and the Put back Slams are nuts.
2) The ratings of team are no longer high so there is no 1 dominant team, every team can be a threat.
3) Smoother Online play.
4) Improved defense... and the stamina meter makes is so people can't run around all day with KOBE, LEBRON and D WADE all game like in 2k9.
5) Smarter AI this year it actually feels like you're playing a real person... The computer ain't dumb no more they'll make the extra pass to the open man or make you pay for a blown defensive cover.
6) My player mode gives the game more playability no longer just a season or online game and it actually improves your basketball IQ for playing in Crews mode or Team Matches.
7) Being able to use your created player online is also a plus .
8) The dribbling is crazy you can literally break defenders down, make them slip trip and everything else and it looks real not all arcadish.
Cons:
1) GLITCHES... you got a fast break going in for the stuff and your dude takes the slowest 2 steps to the basket in the world... Not all the time but it takes away from the smoothness of the game.
2) There are other delays here in there sometime the Ref and the Person taking the ball out tend to play Catch back in forth for like 30 of 40 seconds.. whats that all about. And there are a few other things that can affect game play here and there. All in all I like this game it just feels more real to me than other B-Ball games. In my opinion it provides for the most realistic NBA experience. The game play is spot on. All though there are Glitches they are not a deal breaker plus 2K is releasing a PATCH for it soon so this game will be the Premiere game it is always been.

Part of the frustration of playing a game like this on the Wii is that you have to completely change the way you think about game controls, and there are many new controls to learn. Thus, this game is actually more enjoyable in Family Play mode. You can jump right in and get the basic moves down before attempting to use full control mode.
Some basic moves: rather than shoot the ball by pressing a button, you shoot by making a shooting motion with your hand. Rather than pressing the left or right arrows to steal, rebound, and block, you're flicking your wrists left or right. The B button is to pressure defense or to drive the ball down the lane. The A button or the arrow pad is used to pass.
The graphics are nowhere near NBA 2K8, but they aren't bad either. Players faces look like the players, and there's a nice variety of dunks and finger rolls to give the game some authenticity.
The most difficult thing to do is shoot free throws. You have to do the shooting motion at the right speed/power level to make the shot. The better the free throw shooter, the greater the area on the meter for a successful shot.
Overall, a decent game that's a part of my rotation during basketball season.

Ea sports has done it again. they've produced another overhyped, overrated, and overbought game. not that i'm an easports hater....i buy this game every year; and am more disspointed every year. easports introduces some spectacular new features each year, while taking away several that it had last year or the year before. the end resut it another mediocre game.
on the good side, this year is probably the best nba live i have ever seen. the freestyle is much improved, for once, the players actually shoot halfway realalistic percentages, and the 10 man thingy is incredible. there are struggles for loose balls, incredible graphics and a much improved franchise mode.
but the franchise mode...as good as it is, that's where the flaws start. the computer led teams never have the money to resign thier superstar players. this means that tim duncan and every other good free agent will, after a year or two, will not be resigned by thier team, or signed by any other team, and will spend the rest of thier career as a free agent. do you want a franchise where all the good players never get on a team (unless you sign them, making your team an incredible powerhouse every year...which you CAN do).you'd think easports would make a franchise mode where the GOOD players get on the teams.
also, the computer pretty much lets you destroy it for the first 3 quarters, only to put together an amazing comeback victory (or near victory) in the fourth...EVERY time. seriously. i'm talking 20 point leads gone (frequently). this happens EVERY time...and not just to me.
here are the other flaws: it is nearly impossible to go up for a shot and then change to a pass, it sometimes forgets to sub the guys you told it to, people "wrestle" for the ball WAY too often, the game has a little place to see how much your players improved in trining camp, and it is ALWAYS "0", crossovers don't get you to change direction, and are generally a bad idea to do, trading players is very akward (it's hard to see how good the other player is, how much he's improving, how much time is left on his contract, etc.).
the good: they are actually (kind of) trying this year. having two shoot buttons is awsome. trading draft picks is great, gameplay is great for the mostpart, almost everything is adjustible (gamespeed, fatigue effect, ect.)
in the end, this game comes close to being REALLY good...and with a few minutes of extra work, they could have done it. but that's the amazing thing...now that the end is clearly in sight, now that they are actually trying to be good, they stop just short of it. and nothing other than some sort of secret pledge to mediocrity could have kept them from doing so.
