This book is very well written and informative. As well as the life-story of this remarkable animal it provides an insight into the history and workings of the racing industry. At times it brought a tear to my eye! I have a Northern Dancer horse and I look at him with a new dimension of knowledge.

When Northern Dancer won the Kentucky Derby in the spring of 1964, Canadians poured into the streets to celebrate. Northern Dancer had not only waltzed off with North America's most cherished racing trophy, he had also run the Derby faster than any horse in history. The mayor of Toronto awarded him the key to the city, the country's sportswriters voted him Athlete of the Year, and he was deluged with fan mail. Yet the excitement generated by this remarkable animal had only just begun. The story of Northern Dancer is the stuff of legend. He was a little horse, dismissed time and again because of his size, and to many he appeared to be the antithesis of streamlined, thoroughbred elegance. Today, however, his descendants dominate racing the world over, and Northern Dancer is recognized as the greatest thoroughbred sire in modern history. To discover what made Northern Dancer so extraordinary, journalist Muriel Lennox takes us on a ride into the sport of kings and queens.

I very, very seldom give a book 5 stars, but I really and truly loved this book. Everything about it is encouraging and uplifting - it's even better than That Winning Feeling, Savoie's previous book on this topic. As someone who wrestles with focus, patience, and avoiding distractions when I ride, I was totally impressed with Jane Savoie's simple approach to improving one's arsenal of visualization and positive-thinking techniques. Simply by training your mind, you can hugely improve your performance and your enjoyment of riding. And these techniques are totally applicable to all endeavours in life. The ideas are not new, but have seldom been expressed so kindly and so clearly, particularly with respect to horses. As a bonus, the hardcover edition of this book is also very beautiful, with lovely photos, illustrations and layout. Highly recommended!!

Champions: The Lives, Times, and Past Performances of the 20th Century's Greatest Thoroughbreds Review

Champions: The Lives, Times, and Past Performances of the 20th Century's Greatest Thoroughbreds

This is a big coffee-table book for the parimutuel bettor in your life, in my case, me. There is a chapter for each decade of the 1900s, recounting a few horses' careers and several memorable races, accompanied by pictures of horses in action and at rest. Most of the photos are in black-and-white, and while many are simple side shots of great horses, some of the race photos are stirring, and anyway, the reason for the book's existence is to celebrate and honor the greatest achievements of the thoroughbred bloodline. The bast part of the book, then, is the list at the end of each chapter of the full, career past performances of each of the horses mentioned. And that alone is worth the price of admission. For those of us who appreciate the illustrative, succinct, descriptive nature of the Daily Racing Form, what better use for the power of a single entry than as a vessel for recounting the career of a great thoroughbred? And there are hundreds of them here. We all know how amazing it is to look at the sadly abbreviated line for Ruffian, say, or the now more nostalgic one for Man O' War, but there are so many other great horses here to get reacquainted with. And through them, and the decade summaries, the history of racing. Well done, DRF.

I don't know how to describe how wonderful this book is other than to say that after reading through this book for a week, I declared to my wife that I could spend an hour a day for the rest of my life reading this and be happy doing it. If you are a fan of the game, this is something you absolutely must have. It not only covers the champion horses organized by decade, but each horse's lifetime past performances are included. Anyone who has ever picked up a racing form should delight to see the history of the game in this format.

Why We Ride: Women Writers on the Horses in Their Lives Review

Why We Ride: Women Writers on the Horses in Their Lives

I picked up this book intending to read a story or two on the way to doing something else, but I kept reading story after story, a bit like eating chocolates. In this gem of a collection, the writers bring to life their encounters with the four legged wise ones known as horses, but more than that, the authors become again the girls they once were. We learn how the horses in their lives changed them, gave them courage, taught them lessons about trust, taught them about humans as well as horses. I began to fall in love with the horses one by one--Oliver and Pegasus, Sky and Cassanova, and more. I kept reading every story until I finished the book, each author shaping her narrative to fit her style and the story she had to tell. The book is expertly edited by Verna Dreisbach, whose own story inspired me to keep reading, and Jane Smiley wrote the forword. By the end, you'll be looking up trail rides on Google, or paging through your own photographs to find yourself long ago, a grin on your face, on a horse that changed your life.
