This book has several potential uses. Although I have worked in professional service firms almost my entire life, I found this book to be a useful reminder of what makes a professional service firm great. Although Tom Peters did not intend this purpose, I think it may be the best use of the book. The second use is the intended one: Turn your internal business department into a professional service firm look-alike. The book will work well for those who have driving ambition to be the best. For those who do not share Peters' passion, this book may seem over the top. Peters is a very qualitative thinker, so it would be easy to misapply his ideas in a way that created a tough work environment that created little benefit. For example, The Dance of Change warns against trying to create new language and culture in an organizational sector because everyone else may think you are weird and ignore you. Peters could create that kind of tension for a group if you followed his advice too literally (he suggests that you use questions like "How can we wow you?" when working with colleagues in the firm). On the other hand, Peters is at his best when he is a little off-the-wall because he makes you think. There are plenty of references to outstanding books, and he is really trying to create a picture of perfection. That is helpful, because most business books simply share dated information about past best practices. As someone who helps executives design simple, effective approaches to perfection, I applaud the effort. Peters would do well to accommodate other perspectives. Being totally committed to work and perfection through maximum effort often does not appeal to people as a permanent life style. What should the other people do? If you are an ambitious MBA who wants a mentor, you could do a lot worse than adopt this book as your guide. If you want balance in your life, you had better read Life Strategies as well. Keep up the good work, Tom Peters!

Transform white collar departments into "professional service firms" whose sole, powerful asset is knowledge.Idea: You are boss of a 23-person finance department in a division of a big company. Or, rather, you were boss of the finance department. Now, per our suggestion-model, you are Managing Partner, Finance Inc., a full-fledged professional service firm which is a wholly owned subsidiary of your division.Goal: Learn from the best professional service firms! Transform your unit! Today, even after re-engineering done well, the "department" doesn't look much like McKinsey, Andersen or Chiat Day. (And that's an understatement!)Aim, in short: Cool people (call them "talent") working on cool projects with cool clients. The aim redux: A cool Finance/Purchasing, IS, HR, Sales department. Why not?The cool professional service firm is just that: cool people/talent, a portfolio of cool projects, cool clients. Period. It's only asset -- literally -- is brains. It's only product is projects. It's only aim is truly memorable client service. So step #1, then, is the organization (PSF) . . . transforming "departments" in which white collar folks work into way cool professional sercie firms adding way cool value by doing way cool "stuff". Peters discusses making the most of presentations, working with outsiders on market analysis, how to imporve brainstorming meetings, how to develop relationships with clients and get the most out of them. 50 of Tom Peters's trademark insights on how to get the most our of your department.See also the other 50List titles in the Reinventing Work series by Tom Peters -- The Brand You50 and The Project50 -- for additional information on how to make an impact in the professional world.

Go Big: Make Your Shot Count in the Connected World

The first thing that struck me about this book was the fact that I was laughing the whole way through it. It's refreshing to read a book written by an author from this current generation. His style of writing (quick witted comments etc) really connects with me as someone in my 20's. Beyond the humor though, this book challenged me at a very real level. I've always believed that the passions I have could expand past the hobby category, but after reading this book, I can honestly say that I'm more inspired than I've ever been to intentionally pursue a full-time use of these passions. I know it won't happen all at once, but I have to admit that that is now my goal. Overall, it's pretty cool that some college guys launched something so influential from an idea so simple. I could really see their Go Big attitude in the way this book was written. Now it's time to go chase down my own dream.

It began with a free sandwich, a simple camera, and twenty "I can do better than you" shots. From that afternoon of friendly competition, six college guys created Dude Perfect, a YouTube group that specializes in the craziest basketball shots you can imagine. Within months, the guys went from shooting backyard trick shots to starring in GMC truck commercials and standing on an L.A. Red Carpet. Listed by Advertising Age as one of YouTube's Hottest Brands, Dude Perfect's videos have reached and inspired hundreds of millions with one contagious message—the very phrase they championed from day one—Go Big. By leveraging the connected world, Dude Perfect's dream became a reality, and now, they want the same for you. Written by one of the dudes himself, Go Big tells their story and unveils their secret: five practical principles for taking your passions, skills, and dreams to the next level. Are you ready to Go Big?

Smart Start-Ups: How Entrepreneurs and Corporations Can Profit by Starting Online Communities

The whole first part of the book is basically built around one idea: mobile phone based "communities" & social networks. He keeps reiterating the same point in different ways while promising to explain how to do any of the stuff he talks about in later chapters. The first hundred pages come off sounding like a commercial for the author's other chapters or other projects.
By the time you actually get to the later chapters you'll find them very weak on any substantively useful information or action steps to emulate. The whole project just seems rushed to capitalize on current Web trends and makes a hypothesis of dubious relevance.

Chinnovation: How Chinese Innovators are Changing the World Review

Chinnovation: How Chinese Innovators are Changing the World

When I embarked on reading Chinnovation, I was expecting to learn lessons on how to compete with the Chinese entrepreneurs. I realized that this book is not just for me, rather it is also for the millions of aspiring Chinese entrepreneurs who need a framework or process to help them navigate through the muddy waters of starting businesses. It is comforting to know that there is little "magic" in ensuring entrepreneurial success even in China. Yinglan has the perfect narrative to convey the message that entrepreneurship requires one to be thoughtful and observant, when spotting opportunities, and disciplined in the business execution. It also demonstrates the fact that there are many innovative startups, not just "copycat businesses". The innovation comes when adapting to a rapidly changing and uncertain environment. Chinnovation is a highly readable and enjoyable book and once started, is difficult to put down, despite its 500 plus pages! Narrative after narrative, the case stories take me to the world and circumstances of each entrepreneur. How they confront their challenges, turning "problems into opportunities" will guide and teach the future entrepreneurs in China. As an investor and the non-Chinese reader, the key lesson is to be a more effective business partner to the Chinese entrepreneur in their own markets.
I met the author, Tan Yinglan, recently at a conference in Shanghai. His presentation was top notch and was the key motivating factor in me getting this book to help navigate shark filled waters

Start and Run a Money-Making Bar Review

Start and Run a Money-Making Bar

Just don't look at the cover (the cheeziest cover I think I've ever seen on a book; I literally had to tear mine off to avoid laughing or having any of its "uncoolness" rub off on me).
Anyway, I own a pretty sucessful bar in Santa Barbara California (Indochine on State Street) and bought this book when I was reading up in anticipation of starting a new restaurant (w/ a bar in it).
While the book assumes the reader knows little or nothing about the business, it has a wealth of information for readers of all levels of experience. I was apprised/reminded of numerous aspects of the biz that caused me to tweak my own bar (to largely sucessful result). Quite simply, this book made/saved me significant money.
I highly recommend.
