Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength Review

Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Body for Life" is an excellent book if you're a fitness beginner who's trying to figure out how to get in shape and stay in shape or, perhaps, someone who's been working out and/or dieting for a while and doesn't seem to be making much headway towards losing weight and getting in shape. Phillips does a good job of explaining the basic building blocks of fitness and of debunking a lot of the more prevalent fitness myths. He covers the proper way to exercise, both aerobics and weight training, proper diet, not some fad diet but rather how to eat real food in a healthy way, and how to motivate yourself and keep yourself motivated to stick to your goals.
There are a few caveats, however.
This is a very basic book. Don't think you're going to read this book and then know everything you need to know about fitness. It gives you a good foundation to build on but it doesn't go much beyond that. In my opinion that's a good thing given the book's target audience of fitness beginners. It gives you enough information to get started but it doesn't overwhelm you with data. Be aware that once you get into the program and have a better feel for your specific needs, you may find yourself seeking other books for more information but with the information you get from "Body for Life", you'll be able to make better selections of what type of books to look for. If you're already in good shape, chances are you already know everything that's in this book and if there is something you don't know, it won't be worth the price to find out.
Phillips owns a company which manufactures nutritional supplements. Not surprisingly he pushes the use of supplements in this book. There's nothing wrong with using supplements but they're expensive and not really necessary. They may accelerate the process but you'll still get into shape following the program without them.
Fitness is a lifelong commitment. Don't look at the title of the book and think you're going to get into perfect shape in only 12 weeks. Phillips' program is about using those 12 weeks to develop a fitness program you can stick to for the rest of your life. Ideally, when you finish one 12 week program you'll immediately begin another 12 week program and so on until it's not a 12 week program but a way of life.
If you're a fitness beginner and not certain where to begin or someone who's been working out for a little while but doesn't seem to be making any headway towards your fitness goals, this is the book for you. It offers good solid information on the basics of fitness and how to set and achieve your goals. I highly recommend this book.

For men, broad shoulders and muscular arms are the archetype for strength and power. For women, the sagging underarm is one of the most common trouble spots. For both, defined deltoids make the waist appear smaller and separate the arm from the shoulder, creating an athletic and healthy look. Body-concious modern fashions make training the shoulders and arms a priority for everyone. The Complete Book of Shoulders and Arms is the definitive resource to train these muscles safely. Each exercise is illustrated in detail, ranked for difficulty, flagged for lower-back risk and accompanied by explicit instructions and specific training tips to achieve optimal results. The exercise routines are based on the most current research in sports medicine/exercise physiology and were created by top strength coaches, athletes, personal trainers, exercise physiologists, doctors, physical therapists and nutritionists. Programs are designed for everyone from the novice to the advanced enthusiast, for the corporate executive with time-crunched schedules and for the senior concerned with wellness.

Yoga Stretch for Fitness Review

Yoga Stretch for Fitness

I purchased this off iTunes, but will probably get the CD since the recording on iTunes includes some rather loud additions from the producers. But, this is a wonderful yoga routine and I would highly recommend it for everyone!
You start out with breath work, then move on to some very mellow yoga movements and postures. I love the music on the recording and Beth Shaw's voice is very soothing as she talks you through this routine. The sound quality is very good. It's about an hour in length and even non-yogini's will be able to follow along. I use this as a morning yoga routine since it is very mellow and a great way to start your day. Most of the stretching and postures are done on the floor, but some warrior/standing postures also included. Very much worth the price for this product.

If a person with back problems reads and follows the advice in this book, their situation will improve. There is no magic fix for back pain, but the vast majority, regardless of the diagnoses, will be reduced or even eliminated by correcting the imbalances in the hips. This book tells how to do this. The imbalances were developed over many years, so it will take some time to overcome them. If you want a healthier back, this is the answer, provided you are willing to put in the time and effort.

Pilates' Return to Life Through Contrology Review

Pilates' Return to Life Through Contrology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having studied Pilates(R) for some time and gone through many of the phases of body change and self discovery that the system provides. The book is a reproduction of a relic originally published in 45 under the title "Return to Life Through Contrology." Contrology was the original name that Joseph Pilates gave to his system of exercise. The (R) marks and the PILATES name spattered everywhere is a result of the recent surge and push to mass market the system for profit. This book takes the reader, who simply must be a Pilates student to benefit, back to a more pure time, where Joseph Pilates' ideals grew, not out of a need for copyright symbols, but by a simple desire to understand the human body and to perfect it (beginners should seek out one of the more recently published books to get a better idea of its modern application). This book takes many reads to fully absorb. After reading this book, I discussed it with my instructor, Atasha Avery in Seattle. I understand how she works better because of the book. I now understand her subtle corrections and statements more (whereas before I knew they worked seemingly by magic as she and Pilates(R) transformed my body from flabby and inflexible to somebody who for the first time in my life is free of back pain and comfortable enough with my body to show it off more) and am more able to help her help me. I would definitely not replace Atasha with this book, or with any other instructor for that matter (in my opinion she is a model of the ideals that Joseph Pilates expounds on in his book and is by far the most qualified instructor I have ever worked with. For inspiration, however it is great. The pictures in this book are originals of Joseph Pilates. Although they are not very clearly printed, and should not serve as a guide to performance of the exercises (the best book for this purpose is "Pilates Method of Physical and Mental Conditioning" by Philip Friedman and Gail Eisen), they are a part of Pilates history. If you are serious about starting Pilates and just have to click on a book to buy, click first on Sean Gallegar's book. Then, spend your money on a qualified instructor like Atasha... if you still want more as you advance with your instructor, then by all means buy this book. I give it 5 start because of its historical value. If I were to rate the quality of the publishing separately, it would only rate 1 star. You can't tell from the picture, but this is also a very thin volume, so don't be disappointed if you were expecting an encyclopedia. Good luck, and remember, Pilates is Fitness That Works.

First published in 1945, this new printing of the first major publication by Joseph H. Pilates and William J. Miller details the exercises, poses, and instructions fundamental to the matwork developed by Joseph and Clara Pilates. Based on his concepts of a balanced body and mind and drawn from the approach espoused by the early Greeks, these are the exercises that currently sustain a worldwide revolution in fitness strategies and exercise techniques. Readers will learn the original 34 exercises that Pilates taught to his students, many of whom have become exercise gurus in their own right. These carefully designed exercises are the result of decades of scientific study, experimentation and research into the variety of physical ills that upset the balance of body and mind. In this book, readers will learn the exercises that Joseph Pilates recommended to accompany the basic advice regarding posture, body mechanics, correct breathing, spinal flexibility, and physical education.

Physical Dimensions of Aging- SE

(More customer reviews)
Now in an updated second edition, Physical Dimensions Of Aging by the team of Waneen W. Spirduso, Karen L. Francis, and Priscilla G. MacRae is a textbook resource and reference especially for students and professionals in need of the latest research concerning the physical process of aging and the practical ramifications for anyone working with the elderly, particularly in the field of health care. Chapters discuss changes physical structure, capacity, and endurance; motor coordination and motor control; psychosocial relationships; what distinguishes "physically elite" older adults; and much more. Charts, graphs, and the results of the most recent studies fill this serious-minded text, which avoids an excess of overly technical medical jargon despite its focus upon professionals and field trainees. Highly recommended.

The physical aging process progresses every day—and so does our understanding of it. Physical Dimensions of Aging, Second Edition, will keep students and professionals up to date on the outcomes of the latest research studies and their implications for the elderly in the real world. Physical aging affects us cognitively, psychologically, socially, and spiritually. The book discusses how people age physically and how this aging affects other dimensions of life.

The second edition of Physical Dimensions of Aging has been updated to integrate research findings on physical aging from more than 100 different journals in myriad fields, creating interdisciplinary coverage on the topic. It provides students and professionals with what they need to know about physical aging in order to conduct clinical research and to work with clients and patients. In doing so, it retains its landmark status as the definitive reference on aging.

Moreover, Physical Dimensions of Aging, Second Edition, focuses less on explaining the measurement techniques and research design and more on the outcome of the studies and their practical implications for everyday living. This approach will enable professionals and students to do the following:

-Understand the physical aging process and its effects on other dimensions of life.

-Apply the latest research in working with adults and the elderly.

-Become more effective in their professions. The structure of this new edition is more conducive to learning and features the following:

-Chapter objectives

-Key terms

-Sidebars of capsule research studies

-Testimonials, vignettes, and other tidbits that tie the research information to the real world

-Review questions to assist students in synthesizing and remembering the information

-Short lists of recommended reading for those who want to pursue the topic in more detail

-A glossary at the end of the bookThis second edition is organized into five parts. Part I provides an introduction to aging, to the field of gerontology, and to the research process for studying individual differences. Part II describes the physical changes in structure, capacity, and endurance. Part III overviews the factors related to motor coordination, motor control, and skill learning for older adults. Part IV addresses physical–psychosocial relationships, including health, exercise, and cognitive function as well as health-related expectations of quality of life for older adults. Part V highlights physical performance and achievement especially to showcase the results from consistent effort and hard work of physically elite older adults as inspiration for others.

At a time when many people are telling older adults what they can't do, professionals should be telling them what they can do. Physical Dimensions of Aging, Second Edition, will equip professionals to do so.

I finally had the chance to read John Howard's latest book and thought it had helpful tips for both the novice and seasoned rider... I'm a long time cyclist and sometime racer on local SoCal teams and found the book to have some interesting insights; not only on the bike but a complete section on what to do off the bike for better performance and less injury. John outlines a complete program that includes both strength and flexibly exercised to complement training out on the road... John certainly has done it all and even today will be found in the front group of the legendary `Swami's ride" that's more like an abrading comet... Stacked with top riders and a sprinkling of pros, to see John in his 60's hang, he is doing something right...

Dream It, Live It, Love It: Beyond Well, Beyond 50 Review

Dream It, Live It, Love It: Beyond Well, Beyond 50
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don McGrath's book DREAM IT, LIVE IT, LOVE IT: BEYOND WELL, BEYOND 50 is that carrot in front of the nose manual that is sorely (!) needed. With the emphasis on youth and the job market focusing on youthful presentation, men and women at 50 and beyond can well benefit from this well written, encouraging examination of fitness. McGrath has obviously devoted a good part of his athletic life observing the spectrum of his comrades - from the energetic youths to the advanced years folks whose health and vigor an attitude towards life is profoundly influenced by exercise routines - or to put it more in keeping with this book's message, transforming the detrimental effects of gravity and cell laxity that accompany the passage of time by envisioning a healthy body and mind, finding a manner in which to raise the bar on endurance and regimentation of workouts, and loving the exhilaration that accompanies fitness of boy and mind. Old Age, be gone!
The technique McGrath uses is the original performance focused model: at the center of the model is Performance and feeing into that core are Mental Fitness, Technical Skills, Nutrition, Physical Fitness, Goals and Planning, and Execution. His focus is on the joy and fun of the feeling of accomplishment that comes by transitioning from a lifestyle ruled by sedentary positions into one that incorporates the fitness goals that provide not only pleasure and heightened capacity for younger thinking patterns and physical abilities, but a giant gulp form the Fountain of Youth.
Yes, there are sound examples of a well considered workout routine and these are accompanied by boxes where readers can fill in the goals and ideals and other participating notes of creating the progress to living well and loving living well. These are followed by interviews with athletes McGrath has found who have not only past records of achievement in fitness but are also in constant competition with themselves or members of their workout or running groups - informative and entertaining and inspiring tributes to messages McGrath shares throughout this book.
One of the reasons this motivational physical fitness manual is so successful is McGrath's level of enthusiasm: he makes the concept of getting into shape and staying in shape an exciting dream fulfillment instead of the 'oh, but that is not for me' attitude that most books of this nature induce. He is obviously having fun, as are the athletes and ordinary people who follow this regimen, and that makes all the difference. There is available a 3 CD audio book that is immensely entertaining and educational and hopefully that will be made available soon. Grady Harp, May 11

50 Athletes over 50 Teach Us to Live a Strong, Healthy Life Review

50 Athletes over 50 Teach Us to Live a Strong, Healthy Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fortunately, while people are generally living longer, there has not been as significant a corresponding decline in the quality of that life. The extra years are generally not spent in a state of weakness that has some percentage of being an invalid. This fact is common knowledge, what is not so well known is that many people can remain athletically competitive over the age of fifty, sometimes decades over. This book is a case study of fifty such people.
Granted, there has been some "cherry-picking" of the representatives, but that does not change the fact that it is proven that it is possible for humans to remain active to the point of being athletic several decades after hitting their fiftieth birthday. Some of these people even had to overcome serious injuries from auto and other accidents. The overwhelming message from the acts of these people is that determination is generally more important that the physical aspects of your body. In chapter 10, Dr. Vonda Wright M. D. makes statistical arguments to support the position that "Only 30% of how we age is determined by genetics, while the remaining 70% is determined by the lifestyle choices we make." Furthermore, Wright also uses data supporting the point that, "Masters athletes' performance declined less than 2% a year for both men and women from age 50 to 75. Then, after the age of 75, something else happened. Their performance suddenly dropped by 8% a year."
These statistics point out that it is not only possible to remain extremely active after the age of fifty, but something that should be done. While it is true that not everyone can remain as active and competitive as the 50 portrayed here, together they are an existence proof that it is possible. Even old dogs need role models, and these are some very good ones.

(More customer reviews)
Marie Dunford's FUNDAMENTALS OF SPORT AND EXERCISE NUTRITION provides a fine examination of sport and exercise nutrition, covering its basic concepts and reviewing the field to provide a solid introduction. The latest evidence-based information and its application to sports is revealed in a blend of success stories, boxed highlights, and sidebars of information on sport nutrition.

Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Nutrition provides readers with a preparatory look at the exciting field of sport and exercise nutrition, including its foundational concepts and the diverse career options available. With this one-stop resource, students thinking of entering the field, athletes, and those working with athletes will gain a basic understanding of how nutrition affects sport performance and exercise training. They will also see how this knowledge is put to work in today's sport environment.

The text provides an overview of the field without getting into the more complicated, scientific details. It blends current and evidence-based information and the application of that information to athletes in various sports. The goal of the book is not only to cover the basics of sport and fitness nutrition but to inspire readers to continue their exploration of the topic.

Chapters 1 and 2 define the field of sport and exercise nutrition, the kinds of jobs available, and the education necessary for those jobs. Chapters 3 to 8 cover the essential nutrients of sport and exercise nutrition (carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and balance of water, electrolytes, and fluid) as well as energy balance and imbalance. The remaining chapters cover body weight and body composition, unhealthy eating practices, and the future of sport and exercise nutrition. Because sport nutrition is a young scientific field, the information can sometimes appear to be confusing, contradictory, incomplete, and even unknown. With this text, readers will get the most up-to-date answers to common questions on weight loss, supplements, sport drinks, and other popular issues.

Each chapter of the text summarizes the latest scientific literature and then translates that information into practices that can be used by athletes, coaches, trainers, physicians, and other professionals. Throughout the book are many features that enhance the learning experience and show readers how sport nutrition is used in today's world:

• Numerous boxes highlight interesting topics, myths, and popular beliefs.

• Success Stories showcase individuals who have been successful in the field, how they got to where they are, and how they spend a typical day.

• Sidebars draw attention to interesting trivia and debatable topics.

• An appendix explores how other professions might use sport and exercise nutrition in their work.

Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Nutrition is the second book in Human Kinetics' Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Science series. The series helps students and professionals understand the basic topics, goals, and applications of the many subdisciplines in kinesiology. This and other books in the series provide a solid grounding that readers can use as a jumping-off point for further study.

Your body is supposed to enjoy getting and staying fit! The author gives a number of instructions on how to do just that. His argument for nasal breathing, even at top exertion, is alone worth the price of the book. The many testamonials from athletes who've used the author's instructions successfully shows that I'm not the only one it's worked for.
