Gridiron Leadership: Winning Strategies and Breakthrough Tactics Review

Gridiron Leadership: Winning Strategies and Breakthrough Tactics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gridiron Leadership is an excellent book! In every corporate environment, success or failure boils down to two things, the quality of your plan and, more importantly, your execution of that plan or early recognition of plan change. As in a football game, you can have the best play book, with great plays on offense and great defensive schemes, but if they are continuously executed poorly by unmotivated players, you will not win. If, as a leader/coach, you fail to recognize and make adjustments to your plan in a timely fashion, you will not win. Finally, "attitude is a reflection of leadership", if your team is unwilling to follow you, it doesn't matter how good they are, your likelihood of winning is non-existent. Gridiron Leadership provides the executive reader, fundamentals through vignettes and stories that enforce the lessons learned in this book. These stories discuss sense of purpose, teamwork, trust, communication, moral integrity, giving 110%, not letting your brother down, and playing to win. Effective leaders are always learning and improving. In my opinion, this book is a must read for all aspiring leaders.

Friday Night Lights (gift): A Town, A Team And A Dream Review

Friday Night Lights (gift): A Town, A Team And A Dream

In 1970, having won district and bi-district championships, my high school football team played the Odessa Permian Panthers for the regional crown -- and they creamed us. Most frightening was the crowd that came to Abilene from Odessa to watch the game. They wore solid black (Panther colors) and they were FANATICS. When the Panther band spelled "MOJO" on the field (I'd never encountered that term before) they went absolutely NUTS.
I finally understood the program a little better after reading Friday Night Lights, a terrific examination of the semi-pathological football infatuation in Odessa. And I can't believe the author would ever return there, if he valued his life, because he certainly did not paint a flattering picture. This book is WELL worth reading. Everyone who ever went to high school will glean something valuable from it.
Most touching and telling, I thought, was the scene at the end of the book, after the season had ended, wherein the coach took down the slips of paper showing the names of the seniors who were on the team that year, and unceremoniously dumped them into the trash can. That metaphorically demonstrated the entire town's ethos toward its high school football heroes. After they no longer played for the team, they were just plain trash like everyone else.

Prepare for Rain: The Story of a Church That Believed God for the Impossible

"I am still amazed at the movies Flywheel and Facing the Giants. They are like "the little engine that could." Michael Catt took the impossible and let it be HIM-possible. I remember him saying that in a meeting one time, and now that statement is being lived out in front of all of our eyes. I am so excited that these movies and their stories are being published for the masses. Hooray for the dreamers that do not listen to the voice that says, "It can't be done." Congrats Michael and Sherwood for stepping out and doing the HIM-possible!"
--Mark Harris, Contemporary Christian Artist and Songwriter
"Like Moses and Israel, Michael Catt and the people of Sherwood Baptist are inextricably bound together, experiencing the blessing of God and supernaturally accomplishing more than is naturally possible. Theirs is a remarkable marriage of vision and faith; a humble reminder of what every church can be by the grace of God."
--Tom Elliff, Senior Vice President, International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention
"I love people with a global vision. Monuments are not erected to pessimists. Michael Catt is a visionary. Facing the Giants is a success because a leader allowed those around him to be creative. Michael is "giver" not a "taker." The remarkable success of this movie is not a surprise to me. It is just Michael Catt being Michael Catt! The story of Facing the Giants will bless and thrill you. Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany is a special place. After you read the book, go visit the church. It is a church filled with GIANTS for God!"
--Roger Breland, Executive Director and Dean, Center for Performing Arts
University of Mobile, Founder of TRUTH
"Many books tell us the "what" and some even tell us the "why". Thank you, Michael Catt, for writing about the "how". I appreciate your knack of cutting to the chase and telling it like it is. This book inspires me to motivate people to be involved in something bigger by showing me the footsteps of the vision for a local church."
--Charles Lowery, President, Lowery Institute for Excellence

If you're looking for a book with architectural drawings such as floor plans, sections or elevation i believe it's not the best book for you.
This book mainly contains lots of information and diagrams about stadiums and it's standards which is very helpful for any architectural studies.. it's a very rich book for those who want to know more about stadium design but i recommend having beside it another book with more architectural drawings to give you the whole picture.

I am an adjunct faculty member teaching MBA courses. I thought this book was not only well researched, but also provides the reader with insight on how to use examples from the Patriots organization and improve your own.
Mr. Lavin does not delve into "macho-jock" rhetoric; but instead, offers the reader with helpful quantitative and qualitative analysis on organizational behavior.

Once A Warrior Review

Once A Warrior
Average Reviews:

Former UH Wideout - Ian Sample - generated a storm of controversy in Hawaii one month prior to the start of their 2007 season with the release of this book. The brouhaha that occurred was triggered by Sample releasing portions of his book, that his publisher chose to delete, on his personal MySpace blog that chronicled some of the more negative aspects of the UH football such as alleged drug use, academic improprieties and groupie sex. Since then, school and team officials have proven that some of Sample's allegations are false (cheating on drug testing) while others (academic shenanigans) are currently under investigation.
In the end, it truly is a shame that Sample decided to spurn his publisher's advice and release these controversial, unsubstantiated chapters because all it did was alienate the large demographic originally interested in purchasing the book - the hardcore Hawaii football fan.
The ensuing controversy immediately forced thousands of potential readers to turn their back on a book and player once loved and respected in the 50th State. Which is really a damn shame...because ironically, the actual published book is a great inside look at June Jones' Warrior Football team and their turbulent, spirited 2006 season. While certain aspects are somewhat critical of June Jones and the program, the publishing editors ultimately released a book that is both a paen and swan song to one of the most colorful teams in the world of Collegiate Football. Fans that know the team and the rocky ride that was their 2006 season will enjoy bits such as a near brawl between Hawaii and Arizona State players at a 'friendly' banquet prior to the Hawaii Bowl as well as insights into life on the road, hobbies and past-times of the players (videogames, poker, etc), the love of the islands that transplanted players feel as well as great character studies of Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, Adam Leonard, etc.
Those of you willing to look past Sample's misguided attempt at generating publicity will surely enjoy this book - the way it was meant to be read.

Go behind the scenes in the huddle, in the locker room and on the road with former University of Hawaii receiver J. Ian Sample. What is it really like to be a UH football player? Sample answers this question with honesty and humor. Each chapter focuses on a single game from the Warriors' record-breaking 2006 season, sharing intimate details both on and off the field. Anecdotes in Once A Warrior run the gamut from summer camp pillow fights to dancing the haka to intimidate opponents. It's a player's eye-view of a special season in University of Hawaii football history—the joy of winning big, the sting of losing the close ones—and a heartfelt look at what it means to be a Warrior.

This is a must read for any female or male who wants to know how sports (doing not watching) can help improve your life in all areas. Reading about each of the men and women one better understands how they became whom they are, both good and bad. I think it is a book that parents of pre-teen and teen agers would be wise to buy as well, since statistics show that young women who take part in sports as teens, succeed better in school and put off sexual activity.
And for an adult grappling with some major challenge in their life be it work related a disease or loss of a spouse, reading the stories may well help them re-focus and succeed in the challenge as well. I speak from experience.
Growing up in a family of engineers, physicists, educators, to homesteaders and homeschoolers, sports have always played a big role in small and big successes, because they teach team work, accountability and priority making skills as well as how to think quick or what I call triage thinking.
And as a young girl growing up ion the fifties my Dad would often use shooting baskets, casting a fly fishing line, golf, or hitting a baseball, or skiing to teach me skills that would serve me well be it building a house, working on a car, or being a good wife and mother. Or surviving widowhood and illness.

What do Henry Kissinger, Jack Welch, Condoleezza Rice, and Jon Bon Jovi have in common? They have all reached the top of their respective professions, and they all credit sports for teaching them the lessons that were fundamental to their success. In his years spent interviewing and profiling celebrities, politicians, and top businesspeople, popular sportscaster and Fox & Friends cohost Brian Kilmeade has discovered that nearly everyone shares a love of sports and has a story about how a game, a coach, or a single moment of competition changed his or her life.

These vignettes have entertained, surprised, and inspired readers nationwide with their insight into America's most respected and well-known personalities. Kilmeade presents more than seventy stories straight from the men and women themselves and those who were closest to them. From competition to camaraderie, individual achievement to teamwork, failure to success, the world of sports encompasses it all and enriches our lives. The Games Do Count reveals this simple and compelling truth: America's best and brightest haven't just worked hard -- they've played hard -- and the results have been staggering!

Forza Italia: The Fall and Rise of Italian Football Review

Forza Italia: The Fall and Rise of Italian Football

This was a very enjoyable book to read. Lots of great perspective on Italian Football. It is not the most complete book on the subject, but it is a very easy read. I always appreciate a book that is easy to follow and keeps your attention. The author is also very objective. He addresses allot of issues that are quite controvercial, but he tends to never come across as too judgemental or as somebody that has all of the answers.
Unfortunately, the subject matter was a little bit disheartening. Agnew pulls some really ugly skeletons out of the closet on the subject of Italian Football. Knowing what I know now, it will be hard for me to enjoy Italian football quite as much.

When journalist Paddy Agnew and his girlfriend touched down in Rome in 1985 in search of adventure, sunshine, and the soul of Italiansoccer, they were traveling into the uncharted terrain of a country they did not know and a language they did not speak. It soon became clear that neither Italy nor Italiansoccer would be boring. In that first week in Italy, Michel Platini and Juventus won the Intercontinental Cup, while just days later the PLO killed 13 people in a random shooting at Rome's Fiumicino airport. Paddy covered both stories. The coming years saw the rise of TV tycoon Silvio Berlusconi, as he became owner of AC Milan and then Prime Minister of Italy, naming his political party Forza Italia after a football chant. In that same period, Argentine Diego Maradona became the uncrowned King of Naples, leading Napoli to a first ever Scudetto title in 1987, notwithstanding a hectic, Hollywood-esque lifestyle that mixedsoccer genius with off-the-field excess. Forza Italia is a fascinating tale of inspired players, skilled coaches, rich tycoons, glitzy media coverage, Mafia corruption, allegations of drug taking, and fan power—culminating in the 2006 World Cup victory that delighted a nation and a match-fixing scandal that shocked the world. It is also a personalized reflection on the consistent and continuing excellence of Italiansoccer throughout a period of huge social, political, and economic upheaval, offering a unique insight into a society wheresoccer has always been much more than just a game.

I was moved to tears by S.L. Price's poignant and unique view into the Cuban life. S.L. clearly drew on his sincere personal interest in Cuban culture to gain unprecedented access to compelling figures like Teofilo Stevenson and Lazaro Valle. We all know about El Duque, but Valle's bittersweet story, recounted with giddy mirthful hilarity behiond a dilapidated garage, left a haunting impression of perhaps the world's greatest pitcher, reduced to sneaking change out of a waiter's tip. Sweet as lemon pie.

This is a must-read book for anyone who cares about biography, history, sports, native Americans, Hollywood, or the human condition. It has it all in the form of the charismatic Jim Thorpe, a spectacular talent whose exploits would be hard to believe if such a trustworthy and gifted writer as Kate Buford weren't describing him. How could a football player catch his own punts?... have reactions "so fast that sometimes you couldn't follow them with the eye"?.... leave his nearest rivals so far in the dust one is tempted to think of Secretariat?... And how could someone as beloved as Thorpe been so unfairly stripped of his Olympic medals? In Buford's hands, the man's larger-than-life accomplishments and all-too-human failures and contradictions are balanced and given historical context-- and the reader can't help but mourn his passing.

This is the story of the greatest game on earth, from abandoned matches' to Yeovil Town', via celebrity fans, mascots, punditry and superstitions, written from the fan's point of view and with a separate entry for every club in the English and Scottish leagues. Who cares why, if Torquay United's strikers had been more prolific in the 1950s, England may never have won the World Cup; or where football hooliganism actually began; or who the hell Captain Henry Blythe Thornhill Wakelam is? We do. Because as every true student of the game knows: it's important.

One Heartbeat II: The Road to the National Championship Review

One Heartbeat II: The Road to the National Championship
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One Heartbeat II' is an update to the original book 'One Heartbeat'. The updated version contains stories about the Texas Longhorns' from around 2000 to winning the national title game against USC. There is good news and bad news about 'One Heartbeat II'. The bad news is that Mack Brown isn't in any danger of quitting coaching to start a writing career. The book is weighed down with an 'aw shucks' gooeyness that is sometimes hard to overcome. Writer Bill Little does a pretty good job of narrating the book and adding his own stories but at times falls victim to the same goo.
The good news is that the book succeeds at it's goal of presenting Mack Brown's coaching philosophy. You get a good picture of Mack Brown the person, his life philosophies, and his perspective on how those things relate to his coaching and success with the Texas Longhorns.
'One Heartbeat II' walks through Brown's career, including heavy coverage of his stint at North Carolina and the reasons he left the Tar Heels. Brown presents inspirational stories about his encounters with people throughout his life and career, including stops at LSU, Appalachian State, Oklahoma, Tulane, and (of course) Texas. He includes stories about running back Ricky Williams, dealing with Cole Pittman's death in a car accident in 2001, and Brad Hermes who overcame his deafness to play for the Longhorns. Particularly enjoyable are his frequent encounters with and comments from Texas coaching legend Darrel Royal.
Despite difficulties with the number of cliches and heaping helpings of corniness, you cannot help but find a deeper respect for Mack Brown the person and head football coach of the Texas Longhorns. There is something in this book for everyone, whether a fan, a coach, or an athlete. If you're a Longhorn fan and you haven't read this book you're missing out on a fair amount of insight into the team and coach you hold so dear.

Chronicles some of the life and times of Mack Brown and his journey from Cookeville, Tennessee, where as a child he rode the team bus with the high school football teams his grandfather coached, to Austin, Texas, where today he is head football coach of the University of Texas Longhorns. One Heartbeat II is filled with thoughts and stories from Brown who, in following his dream of coaching, has built winning football programs everywhere he's coached. Each chapter opens with a photograph depicting a person or an experience that has helped shape Mack Brown's life, his values, and his philosophy.
