Oxford Dictionary of Quotations by Subject (Oxford Paperback Reference) Review

Oxford Dictionary of Quotations by Subject (Oxford Paperback Reference)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations by Subject (Oxford Paperback Reference) is a handy, compact resource to have around. I think it is far superior to The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Quotations, which I have been using up until this point.
CONTENT
------------
The entries are arranged alphabetically by subject. Whenever possible, the name of the author, their dates, their significance, the title of the source, and the date of the quotation are given. For example, the fourth quotation under "education" is "Go to the pine if you want to learn about the pine" Matsuo Basho 1644-94 Japanese poet: Nobuyuki Yuasa (ed.) Basho. The Narrow Road to the Deep North (1966) Introduction.
WHY DO I PREFER IT OVER MERRIAM-WEBSTER?
---------------------
It draws on sources from several traditions (not enough for my taste, but better than most). I think this was a very good choice for an audience that is becoming increasingly familiar with various cultures. In contrast, the content of the Merriam-Webster dictionary is taken almost entirely from the Western one.
It not only gives you the author's name, but enough information to understand roughly when the entry was written, and even the source, so you can actually track down the quotation yourself. Finally, an editor of a general work did not dumb it down and carefully recorded the sources to empower us. Merriam-Webster's only tells you the author and source. If you do not recognize the name, you have no idea when it was written, where, and what the author's significance is.
The content is up to date. Entries in other dictionaries tend to all have come from before I was born. I have found some quotations from as recently as two years ago in this book. Of course, there is nothing at all wrong with old, but I think it is better to have a good mix. Merriam-Webster's dictionary was published nearly two decades ago, and because the editors focused on dead white men, it isn't even useful for quotations from the 80s and 90s.
It is inexpensive (paperback). Although Merriam-Webster's costs even less, I think you get more for your money with this one.
DRAWBACKS
---------------------
It is somewhat larger than Merriam-Webster's. There is a lot of dead space in the book, and they could have easily printed it smaller if they had wanted to.
The Bible quotations are strangely lacking information. Why only put "Bible: St. Matthew"? Personally, I'd like to know exactly where to find it. Merriam-Webster's provides this.
SUMMARY
---------------------
This is a very well-edited volume that far exceeded my expectations for a general dictionary of quotations. I highly recommend it.

No Idle Hands: The Social History of American Knitting Review

No Idle Hands: The Social History of American Knitting

Reading the reviews, I can understand why a non-knitter would not be charmed by this book. This book is by, for and about knitters. Whenever I'm bogged down with my knitting, I pick this book up again, seeking inspiration from 200 years of American knitters. The book is delightfully written, with lots of original source quotations, and allows us to peek into the day-to-day lives of colonial knitters, revolutionary war knitters, civil war knitters, depression era knitters, etc. It gives one a strong sense of women's role in American society at different times, reminds us (often amusingly) about fads and trends, and shows how wars shape lives beyond the battlefields. It's a wonderful book. My only regret is that it doesn't have more photographs of knitters and old knit garments.

Drawn from diaries, letters and personal reminiscences, No Idle Hands tells an intimate and sometimes hair-raising story of hand knitting in America from Colonial times onward. Women knit through the hardships of covered wagon travel across the West. They knit to save their husbands and sons from freezing to death on battlefields. Shell-shocked men knit to save their sanity in hospitals during both world wars. No Idle Hands documents the importance knitting has had in American life.--This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

The Games Do Count: America's Best and Brightest on the Power of Sports
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a must read for any female or male who wants to know how sports (doing not watching) can help improve your life in all areas. Reading about each of the men and women one better understands how they became whom they are, both good and bad. I think it is a book that parents of pre-teen and teen agers would be wise to buy as well, since statistics show that young women who take part in sports as teens, succeed better in school and put off sexual activity.
And for an adult grappling with some major challenge in their life be it work related a disease or loss of a spouse, reading the stories may well help them re-focus and succeed in the challenge as well. I speak from experience.
Growing up in a family of engineers, physicists, educators, to homesteaders and homeschoolers, sports have always played a big role in small and big successes, because they teach team work, accountability and priority making skills as well as how to think quick or what I call triage thinking.
And as a young girl growing up ion the fifties my Dad would often use shooting baskets, casting a fly fishing line, golf, or hitting a baseball, or skiing to teach me skills that would serve me well be it building a house, working on a car, or being a good wife and mother. Or surviving widowhood and illness.

What do Henry Kissinger, Jack Welch, Condoleezza Rice, and Jon Bon Jovi have in common? They have all reached the top of their respective professions, and they all credit sports for teaching them the lessons that were fundamental to their success. In his years spent interviewing and profiling celebrities, politicians, and top businesspeople, popular sportscaster and Fox & Friends cohost Brian Kilmeade has discovered that nearly everyone shares a love of sports and has a story about how a game, a coach, or a single moment of competition changed his or her life.

These vignettes have entertained, surprised, and inspired readers nationwide with their insight into America's most respected and well-known personalities. Kilmeade presents more than seventy stories straight from the men and women themselves and those who were closest to them. From competition to camaraderie, individual achievement to teamwork, failure to success, the world of sports encompasses it all and enriches our lives. The Games Do Count reveals this simple and compelling truth: America's best and brightest haven't just worked hard -- they've played hard -- and the results have been staggering!

Die Happy: 499 Things Every Guy's Gotta Do While He Still Can Review

Die Happy: 499 Things Every Guy's Gotta Do While He Still Can
Average Reviews:

Do you read Maxim? Then you might enjoy this book. It will be redundant, however; 480 of the 499 things (I didn't count) are "How to go to Mardi Gras and get laid." (Step one: Go to Mardi Gras. Step two: Get laid. Real useful.)
The rare exceptions to the "Get drunk and meet hawt girls" entries (The Running of the Bulls, say) haven't enough practical information to fill the back of a postage stamp.
You've read the title of the book, and that's the high point of the experience. Getting out there and doing something that you can look back on fondly in your settled-down is a great goal. That goal will not be facilitated--at all--by reading this meandering dreck.
There is no information in this book, only ideas. If you want to go to TJ and get drunk and laid, you might want some advice on border crossing, what times of year to go, what to bring, and so on. In this book, you'd only get the chapter title "Go to TJ and get drunk and laid" and then a page of "yeah it's awesome you'll totally get laid just go there and stuff." Ideas are nice (the running of the bulls? I'm adding that to my list.) ...but you can get lists of ideas on the internet. Information? No. ...and most of the ideas are junk.
This book isn't good enough to prop up a table leg.

Attention, guys of America: It's time to get off the couch, turn off the PlayStation, and set down your beer (just kidding--never set down your beer). Your days of freedom are numbered. Every guy owes it to himself to do something audacious, ostentatious, hilarious, or just plain fun before it's too late. The time is now for the kinds of things that will be decidedly against the rules after you "settle down." Die Happy is here to help you create the kind of stories you'll be telling for the rest of your life. Stories about things like: How you spent your graduation cash: You start at Oktoberfest in Munich and wake up on a Thai beach (which is totally what your Aunt Edith had in mind). From Fantasy Fest to La Tomatina, here's a breakdown of the wildest parties and the craziest worldwide destinations. The best places to, ahem, explore other cultures (or whatever): Corfu's Pink Palace. Ireland's pubs. Amsterdam's Red Light District. Ibiza. Plus plenty of other fascinating events and locales, many of which also happen to serve booze. Getting a job (don't worry, not a real job): Jet Ski guy. Cruise ship bartender. Casino dealer. Lifeguard. Roadie. Where and how to earn the money to subsidize your fun, usually in some exotic location full of very friendly women. At once a "How To," a "To Do," and a "We Did," Die Happy contains all the ideas, checklists, and insanely funny true stories you'll need to help you have as much fun as possible--while you still can.

This is one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. Neal Karlen was a writer for Rolling Stone, sent to St. Paul, Minnesota to "get the dirt" on Bill Murray, iconoclastic actor and part owner of the St. Paul Saints. The Saints are a minor league baseball team, part of the independent Northern League, and operated by Mike Veeck, son of the legendary Hall of Famer Bill Veeck. (Casual baseball fans will most likely recall the senior Veeck for having sent midget Eddie Gaedel up to bat as a pinch hitter. It was only one of many colorful stunts by the games' most creative promoter ever).
Karlen sticks around for a couple of years; the story for Rolling Stone never materializes, but along the way this book emerges, as much about Karlen's crisis of spirit as it is about the Saints and the zany cast of characters surrounding them. But along the way we meet many of those who have given the Saints and the Northern League their unique cachet: on the field performers like former Mets slugger Darryl Strawberry, who temporarily redeems his life and career during a two-month stay with the Saints; former pitching star Jack Morris, seeking one more taste of glory, but on his terms only; Ila Borders, the first female to play in a professional game; and Wayne "Twig" Terwillliger, player and coach for 50 seasons and quiet representative of so much that's right with the game.
There are also wonderful portraits of Sister Rosalind. the nun who offers massages at games; a blind radio announcer convinced he's on his way to the big leagues; an employee of one of the Saints' rivals who earns the title "Most Beloved Woman in the Northern League" and others who find solace, healing and a chance to keep dreaming dreams in this strange, wacky, wonderful firmamenent. I really hated to come to the end of this one. The empty feeling was almost as bad as the night the World Series ends.

Men Made Easy : How to Get What You Want from Your Man Review

Men Made Easy : How to Get What You Want from Your Man
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is admittedly old, and perhaps a lot has changes culturally since it was published. I am in my early 20's, so that might make a difference.
My first gripe is that about half of each chapter is written as a story, and the other half is straight to the point. The book could have been half as long if the story was left out.
Secret 1: Use feminine grace. Essentially she tells you to dress so you feel pretty, be nice, never be "ugly" (both physically and in behavior). Always wear pretty/sexy underwear. I totally agree with being nice to people in general, and overall have no complaints with this one, except she suggests using kissing as a reward system.
Secret 2:Men need to be understood and accepted for who they are. Basically don't try to change men, don't try to fix them, etc. Good advice
Secret 3: You are his only source of intimacy. This chapter is based on the broad generalization that all women are social creatures with at least one close friends and wide circles of friendships while men have only acquaintances and no close friends. It completely discounts anyone who is outside of this norm. We, as women, must then make ourselves completely available for our men to be their best friend, in all circumstances.
Secret 4: Sex is the only way men know how to be intimate:says to understand that men are socialized to not feel emotions or connect with people, so they can only express intimacy through sex. They can't possibly say and mean "I love you", so they say it through sex. I think this discounts human variation too much, and really doesn't give men enough credit.
Secret 5: Men have high hopes for monogamy. Great news, right? Yeah, until she gets to the point where if a woman looses interest in sex, he has no option but to follow is nature and seek out someone else. It seems to be a recurring theme that it is the woman's job to be very very interested in sex, all the time, to keep her man. Not only interested, but keep the sex exciting and fun for him. SHE should buy fresh undergarments that will arouse him, dress up, push HER boundaries, etc.
Secret 6:For a man, failure is like death. Basically she says it is a woman's job to always make her man feel like a success at home. What if he isn't? What if he doesn't do anything around the house, ignores the kids and you, etc? Reward him for doing little things, like putting his glass in the kitchen, with a sexy long kiss. Explain to the kids how important he is, and how hard he works, and tell them they shouldn't bother him. Accept that he needs his alone time at home. What crap! So he gets a free pass, and the woman (80% of whom also work these days) has to do everything?
Secret 7: If you're not happy, hes a failure. But, don't depend on him for happiness. Nope, be happy all by yourself through feminine grace. Live happy so he can be happy too.
Secret 8: Men show their love through action. If he washes your car, its his way of saying he loves you, because he can't express it in other ways. Again, nothing wrong with this except it doesn't take into account human variation. I am a woman, and I best express my caring through practical actions. I dated a man who was great at romance and poetry and love songs. Its all about the people, not the gender.
Secret 9:Men take risks to survive. But they hate being rejected. Once again, this pretty much boils down to doing what he wants, especially when it comes to sex. She says that unless you have a good reason not to, why in the world would you want to risk hurting him by saying no. SO you should almost always say yes. Oh, and it can't just be "yeah, ok" sex, it has to be fun and exciting for him. If you don't desire him, its your fault and you should take steps to admire him again so you will desire him. If he doesn't desire you, its probably because you have gained weight, let yourself go, and are acting ugly, so you better diet, hit the gym, pretty yourself up, and be nicer. Nice, huh?
Secret 10: Men loose when they commit. By getting married, men have to give up their dreams, make compromises, in order to support their families. Women, however, dream of having a husband and kids, so she gets to live her dream (sound like something out of the 1800's anyone?). Additionally, men want their wives to stay exactly the same as when they marry them. So what do we need to do? Tell him often how much you appreciate how hard he works to support you. Give him his privacy and time alone for his hobbies. Keep yourself beautiful and feminine. And of course, make sure you are offering lots of sex.
Secret 11: To be heard, you must speak his language. This one is actually a good tip. Don't assume he knows what you are thinking or feeling, spell everything out. Have a conversation about communication, listening, etc, and work together to improve your communication.
Secret 12: Men want to be with women who make them feel like men. Ask him to do "manly" stuff like opening jars. Tell him how strong and handsome he is, what a hard worker he is, how much you appreciate him supporting you, etc. Nothing wrong with this either, but I really get the feeling that the author sees a woman's job as her man's "ego booster" and sex object.
Overall, I didn't like the book, and am glad I got it from the library. There are so many books out there that focus on the team aspect of relationships, and how each person must be happy and healthy on their own in order to have a healthy relationship, etc. Pick one of those instead.

Whether single or married, Men Made Easy is filled with information that is so essential, you'll wonder how you survived without it.If you and your girlfriends have ever laughed that you need an "owner's manual" for the men in your life, Men Made Easy is as close as you'll get. Men become a little nervous when they find out how accurately this book explains why they do what they do, what they are thinking, and how to get them to respond to you in ways you've always hoped for. But if you are looking for quick, cute, and snappy ways to manipulate men, this is not the book for you. You're going to be getting much more than a quick fix or clever tricks. You will be looking inside the private world of men, a world they have chosen not to reveal to women and you will find that men become more predictable and sometimes even transparent. You will be much smarter in how you communicate and interact with them. All your relationships with men will begin to improve, especially in the arena of love and romance. To get more love and romance, you need to learn what is really going on with men. After interviewing hundreds of men and studying them for two years, Kara Oh is able to take you into their previously hidden world. Here is just some of what you can expect:* You will discover how to communicate your needs in new ways, ways that will make him want to do things for you (yes, even help around the house) and want to make you happy.* You will learn what it takes to get him to want to commit to you and make you his wife.* You will learn how to get that new man's attention and put him in such a spin that he won't be able to take his mind off of you.* You will have fun "playing with" your feminine grace and watching how easily men respond to the secrets that you will be using. You know that he hides his feelings behind a defensive wall. And you beat against his chest because he won't let you in. But now you are going to be able to actually go behind that wall, find out what he is feeling, what drives him, what he's afraid of, what he won't tell you, why he needs to be successful, what love means to him, and why he wants and needs to marry. Because you are going to make him feel understood and safe for maybe the first time, you will become invaluable to him because you will now have the key to his heart and soul. You will also enjoy a new sense of empowerment that will make you feel like dancing. And even though he won't know what's happening to him, he's going to love what you're doing and realize how very special you are to him. With a higher than 50% divorce rate and at least 80% of dating relationships failing and breaking hearts, it's obvious that there is something terribly wrong with how men and women interact and it's getting worse, not better. Communication is the key but if you are like most women, you've seen his eyes glaze over and most likely heard the phrase, "Can you just get to the point?" Obviously, you need to speak to him in new ways if you are going to see improvements in your relationship because how you have been doing it isn't working very well, is it? Finally, you will know how to speak to him so he really and truly listens to what you have to say.You can finally take charge of your love life. You deserve to be loved, to feel empowered in your relationship and to enjoy happiness. Kara offers the tools you need to finally get what you want: ever-deepening love and respect, romance, and an enduring relationship with a man who makes you feel cherished and adored. Men Made Easy is filled to overflowing with in-depth understanding about what it takes to create the kind of relationship you want. The book is easy to understand and fun to read. And almost immediately, effortlessly, you will be using her secrets like a pro. Some emails that have been sent to the author or to her online advice column, Ask Ms. Magic:Dear Kara,I am soooooo happy! It just dawned on me how much my SO has improved since I read and applied Kara's techniques (3 months or so). He is less moody, doesn't go into those "I need my space" funks for days like he used to (now it's one evening of "I need to watch TV in the other room, ok?" and then back to cuddle time!). He professes his love for me more often and has even said the things I've longed to hear, "you are my destiny, my goddess, you helped me to live again!" When he said those things, I almost cried. This was two days ago and I'm still in shock and on cloud nine! Ladies, I say, read Kara's book a few times over if you need to and live it! My relationship has become something of my dreams that I thought would never come true. If it can happen for me it can happen for you. Also, I want to buy 2 hard copies of your books for my sisters... I've been respectful of your good work and have not forwarded the emailed version, but really want to share your insights. No lipstick, cute shirt or strapped sandal has made me feel as confident; so glad I ran into your book just before dating again. THANK YOU KARA!!!!!This book has me mesmerized! As Beth in the book says, most of it I already know, just not consciously, or especially how to apply it to help the relationship. I am only half way through the book and I have come across MANY things that make me think of this friend, or that friend. Every woman should read this, and I will be telling the women I know! Where else can you find murder, mystery, elite sports, guns, greed, special ops, mafia, and glamour? Dead Ball has it all! The story takes place on the rarefied grounds of AllSport - state-of-the-art facilities that house & train top athletes in numerous sports to compete at the highest levels. Cutthroat tactics abound throughout the book, the players are many, and the high-stakes world of amateur & professional sports makes for a thrilling read. A brazen murder is committed and the list of suspects with plenty of motive and opportunity is long. Then the body count grows. The sports world is one where all kinds of people come to play, not just the athletes, and rules of the game are sometimes subject to dangerous interpretation. Is murder just another form of competition? Is it no more than a price to be paid as a means to an end? Or is it revenge? Dead Ball is full-throttle action from the very first page!

50 interviews with people with ALL SORTS of careers at a ballpark--players, clubhouse workers, mascot, landscaping, announcer, ballpark vendors (food, beer, etc.).
My favorite interviews were the ballpark architect, the umpire, the shortstop who goes to art galleries when he travels around the US, and the "from Connecticut" ticket hustler.
I like that I can read one interview at a time or several in a row.
This would be a good gift for any man. I will keep it in mind for the impossible-to-shop-for 15-25 year old. It also strikes me as a good graduation gift because everyone in the book talks about how they came to have that job.
I am female 32 years with limited interest in pro sports...

The fact that the subject is baseball is beside the point. The authors have shown skill, humour, and insight in their ability to identify and highlight all the areas that go into making the game what it is. Some of the people are likable, some you even feel sorry for, but the tact, taste, and even the occasional lack of objectivity serve to make this an enjoyable read. (Coming from a family with many anthropoligists, I can say I've never read anything as fun to read as this.)

NBA 2K8 Review

NBA 2K8
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
NBA 2K7 was arguably the greatest basketball game ever created. The gameplay was simply no match for NBA Live's gameplay, which was downright horrible. Well, just when I though 2K Sports couldn't make a better basketball game than last years, this game came out. One of the big problems with NBA 2K7 was the graphics. A lot of the players didn't really resemble their real life counterpart. Well, that is no longer the case. 2K8's graphics are the best I've seen yet, and all the players look so realistic that you actually believe that you're out there with them sweating on the court.
Of course, graphics aren't everything, right? Well, 2K8 has even better gameplay than last years. The shot stick still rocks the house, but there are also a lot of new additions to each game you play. After each game, you can watch the top three plays of the game. But that's not the coolest part. After each game, you can watch a highlight real of any player during the game. If you're playing as Kobe Bryant and you score 50 points against your opponent, then after the game you can watch each amazing play made by Kobe during the game. Sweet, right?
Well, this game also has a very fun and very realistic Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. This should keep you busy for hours, and it isn't even a part of the main game. If you're not good a dunking, there is a dunk school that can teach you how to emulate LeBron on his jams. There is also a really cool 3-Point Shootout.
So, if you're debating whether or not you should go with the hoops king 2K8, or try NBA Live 08, then I would HIGHLY suggest you get 2K8. Even though Live 08 is greatly improved upon, it still has a ways to go to catch up with 2K Sports and their basketball genius.

well I am here to say this game definately does more justice than a 1 star!! With all the capabilities that is offered in the game, how could it be? I enjoyed the game, and actually was suprised by the game play on the PSP, the graphics are more enjoyable than the PS2 version, but I would say the realism it not... in the PSP version, I don't like the fact that it is so easy to make shots, players go to the hole anytime they wish, and it's extremely hard to steal in the game... but like I said, it really is enjoyable to have all those options at the palm of your hand; shot out is added which I have never played before, and it seemed I was stuck on that challenge even before I experienced playing a real game... bottom line is the game is good, damn good for PSP, I just hope EA can make some slight adjustments towards next years edition.
