(More customer reviews)I purchased this along with Fodor's Las Vegas 2010 and Frommer's Las Vegas 2010. This book has the most pages. They break down everything in terms of a rating, price, etc. for shows they tell you the slowest time of the week for the show, the length of the show, as well as a description. It breaks down the top restaurants and buffets.
This book has information regarding shows, hotels, restaurants, nightlife. There are little tips here and there but none i found that i didn't already really know.
What I don't like is that there are no pictures--and there are very few visual breaks for me so sometimes the pages can be a bit overwhelming. I loved the Fodor's book the best for layout and pictures as well as side trip information.
The difficulty in rating is that there are some things I like about Fodor's better and it gives better information and some things I like about this one better--this one has more information about buffets--which kind of excite me. I'm wondering if the only thing i will be doing is eating!
After looking at Fodors and this book over and over, it really has become more of a tie for me between the two. Frommers on the other hand is clearly not on par with either of these books and provides the least amount of information on everything.
If you are only looking to be in Las Vegas, then this is probably the best book. If however, you are like me and also wanting to do day trips or side trips, I would also purchase Fodor's Guide to Las Vegas 2010 as it has a lot more information about those. (63 pages on side trips--as opposed to 6 pages in this book).
I hope this help you make a decision on which book is best.
I learned from this book about the "M" casino that has an excellent buffet for fairly inexpensive. it is a little south of the strip so a lot of people don't know about. so far, it is our favorite buffet. although we will be going to Wynn soon because they are suppose to have an excellent buffet also.
I highly recommend buying and reading at least 1 of these guides--this or fodor's as there is so much information that you may not find out if you just come.

The premise of Truth and Rumors is as original as it is ambitious: The idea is to collect, in one book, al the persistent rumors surrounding television shows, stars and events, and separate the facts from the fictions.
If the rumors don't make you drop you jaw, or laugh out loud, the answers will. Brioux employs a writing style that is both breezy and authoritative, as evidenced by this very quick setup to one unusual rumor.
"RUMOR: Joanie Loves Chachi was the biggest TV hit ever in South Korea because 'Chachi' is Korean for 'penis.'
"FALSE: Let's get one thing straight. Joanie Loves Chachi was never a hit, in Korea or anywhere else."
That's gold right there, but Brioux keeps going. He informs readers that yes, "jaw-jee" is a Korean slang term for the male genitalia, and no, the Scott Baio sitcom never aired on regular South Korean TV.
So much ground is covered here - and not just covered, but dug up. Did LBJ really call Walter Cronkite to complain about his CBS newscast while Cronkite was in the middle of that very show? Did a local newswoman in Florida commit suicide on live TV, after announcing to viewers she would do so? And did Michael Jackson provide the voice of a character on The Simpsons?
Through direct reporting, Brioux provides the answers: yes, yes, and yes. And answers to a lot more, in delightful chapters with such titles as "The Naked Truth" and "Ward, I'm Worried about the Beaver."

The Encyclopedia of Superstitions Review

(More customer reviews)Richard Webster's "The Encyclopedia of Superstitions" is a collection of superstitions, primarily from the Western world [not including regional superstitions] and are alphabetically listed, from A to Z. However, the author lists not just superstitions associated with particular objects, creatures or people, but also anything associated with the subject, e.g. divination, though not strictly a form of superstition, has associations with the subject and hence the author includes it and even mentions the different forms of divination.
A typical entry reads something like this - "Purse: It is important to place a coin in any purse that you intend to give away as a gift. This ensures that the person who receives the purse will have good luck and will never run out of money. See coin, money"
The list of superstitions is by no means exhaustive as the author himself in the preface mentions the large scope of superstitions of cultures across the globe. Perhaps at some point, there will a compendium of Eastern superstitions.
On the whole, this is an amusing and interesting read for fans of trivia, and may even be helpful for purposes of research. There aren't much illustrations, just random black and white drawings of objects of superstitions. Final verdict: a fun & informative read!

The cd-rom consists of video and audio segments or snippets as they are quite short on the average; it includes voice commentaries, installation videos, teleprompters, and practice media for you to develop your skills.
The book is and entertaining read with chapters on the history of broadcasting, the various types of broadcasting( radio dj, television, cable etc), the great broacasters, interviews, the biology of the human voice mechanism, techniques and the like.
Overall this book is definitely helpful in guiding towards the broadcasting industry and could be useful for students of mass communication and media studies.

It has classic TV shows, movies, top 40 music, Fads,
commercials, classic toy's, classic candy bars, great Icons, comics, and much more, popular and not very popular, about stuff from the 1950's to 1990's.
Babyboomers should have fun browsing in this book, but younger and older should like this book also.
The biggest problem with this book, is putting it down.
A book with, The Beatles, Jonny Quest, Coca Cola, Captain Kangaroo, Gilligan's Island, Hot Wheels, Barbie, Mini Skirts, The Flintstones, and much much more in one book can't be all bad.
Almost everything? almost, and almost everybody, should have fun reading this book.

(More customer reviews)The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations by Subject (Oxford Paperback Reference) is a handy, compact resource to have around. I think it is far superior to The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Quotations, which I have been using up until this point.
CONTENT

The entries are arranged alphabetically by subject. Whenever possible, the name of the author, their dates, their significance, the title of the source, and the date of the quotation are given. For example, the fourth quotation under "education" is "Go to the pine if you want to learn about the pine" Matsuo Basho 1644-94 Japanese poet: Nobuyuki Yuasa (ed.) Basho. The Narrow Road to the Deep North (1966) Introduction.
WHY DO I PREFER IT OVER MERRIAM-WEBSTER?

It draws on sources from several traditions (not enough for my taste, but better than most). I think this was a very good choice for an audience that is becoming increasingly familiar with various cultures. In contrast, the content of the Merriam-Webster dictionary is taken almost entirely from the Western one.
It not only gives you the author's name, but enough information to understand roughly when the entry was written, and even the source, so you can actually track down the quotation yourself. Finally, an editor of a general work did not dumb it down and carefully recorded the sources to empower us. Merriam-Webster's only tells you the author and source. If you do not recognize the name, you have no idea when it was written, where, and what the author's significance is.
The content is up to date. Entries in other dictionaries tend to all have come from before I was born. I have found some quotations from as recently as two years ago in this book. Of course, there is nothing at all wrong with old, but I think it is better to have a good mix. Merriam-Webster's dictionary was published nearly two decades ago, and because the editors focused on dead white men, it isn't even useful for quotations from the 80s and 90s.
It is inexpensive (paperback). Although Merriam-Webster's costs even less, I think you get more for your money with this one.
DRAWBACKS

It is somewhat larger than Merriam-Webster's. There is a lot of dead space in the book, and they could have easily printed it smaller if they had wanted to.
The Bible quotations are strangely lacking information. Why only put "Bible: St. Matthew"? Personally, I'd like to know exactly where to find it. Merriam-Webster's provides this.
SUMMARY

This is a very well-edited volume that far exceeded my expectations for a general dictionary of quotations. I highly recommend it.

It is based on extensive oral history interviews, thorough archival research, and the author's keen sensibilities about baseball. I relished reading the book because it filled a significant gap in my knowledge of the game. Marshall is especially strong on the role of free agency and how this manifested itself in the Mexican league of the post-war era. His general knowledge of players, managers, and management is impressive. Finally, this book is well written, without academic jargon. "Baseball's Pivotal Era" merits reading by fans and scholars alike.

My name is Jessie and I wanted to take a moment to write to you to thank you for the inspired poetry and lunacy related to your delicious book about pigeons.

I opted to post an open letter via Amazon because I want the whole world to know about your extraordinary book. I have never read anything as weirdly wonderful as this.
Finding your pigeon was a bit of kismet as it sort of snuck up on me in the book store. I was on my way to the check out counter with a biography of the Red Baron, a history of gunpowder and another book about the men who created alternate and direct currents when I saw a pigeon staring at me from the side.
It looked odd next to the other books whose covers were dull by comparison...when I saw the title next to the bird my inner teenager thought "NO way, Jose"....but sure enough it was exactly what the title implied and then some.
I love love LOVE some of the characters you met in your travels and found myself envying the fun you must have had in meeting such an eclectic group of pigeon enthusiasts and pigeon haters.
Though I must also confess that the revolting chapter related to the gutting and lung-ing of squabs elicited a whole series of voluminous UGHS! and BLECHS! The mental picture you provided was gruesome enough to force me to consider going totally vegan.
The man who wrote his doctoral thesis on spider hearing was intriguing, can you write his biography too?
And you also left me wanting to know more about the man who wrapped himself in tinfoil to keep himself warm. Sally Bananas was fascinating and I was riveted by the chapter devoted to Mike Tyson. Despite never meeting him you captured something NO ONE has ever done before... You showed his subtle and poignant humanity and made me wish the whole world could know him THAT way.
So many great stories in one book...This book really is FOR the birds.
Ahhh yes, the pigeons. After reading your absorbing book, I feel bad that for all these years I never really paid pigeons any mind. Much like my socks I took them for granted. You did for pigeons what Neruda did for socks. Showing the value and beauty of something seemingly mundane and yet utterly transformative and magical.
I missed something truly glorious in these astonishing and surprising creatures. You have a convert in Dallas. Praise be to pigeons everywhere. Next time I see one which is practically every hour, I will think of your book with a smile.

Trapshooter's Bible - Precision Shooting Review

(More customer reviews)While this book offers many sound trapshooting points, they come amidst a sea of personal opinion, Christian evangelizing, and the marketing of other books. This book is self-published and begs for professional editing. There are countless glowing spelling and grammatical errors. If one were to eliminate the redundancy and material not related to the subject, this rather expensive book would barely reach 100 pages. And, as if the contents were all his original ideas, he offers no bibliographic reference for any of the opinions, facts, or conclusions, even though many are contrary to conventional trapshooting wisdom and instruction. While Russell is quick to point out that the book is only useful if kept constantly on hand during practice and competition, he also sells it as an e-book that cannot be printed. All things considered, I have to seriously question the accuracy of the material and the validity of Mr. Russell's opinions.

(More customer reviews)The "SAS Survival Handbook" is the most comprehensive survival handbook I have ever seen. Most books have some basic advice (the importance of the correct mental attitude, finding water and shelter, etc.), a handful of edible plants, and a couple of ways to start a fire. While this book covers all those areas, it also has sections on camp craft, determining directions, rescue signals, dealing with different climates and terrains, reading clouds for weather prediction, and many others. A good example of the thoroughness of the coverage would be the food section. It covers your energy needs and how they are met from various foods, testing unknown plants in desperate situations, plants to avoid, identification of plants, using animals for food, extensive and detailed trapping mechanisms, fishing, gutting and cleaning, and other advice. The number, types, and detail on the various traps are amazing. I've never seen so many different designs. It includes several that I have not seen anywhere else before. I would consider this the authoritative text on survival skills in the wild and give it the highest recommendation for anyone interested in survival techniques.

Voyaging On A Small Income Review

It describes a philosophy of living very different from that maybe experienced before on a cruising holiday, weekend sailing, or even daily life. It starts from the point of view that long term, live-aboard life is both possible and sustainable, providing certain perspectives are adopted. These include rejecting any item of equipment not capable of extended, reliable, cost-effective performance on board a boat (this for example rules out most modern electronics, for entirely sensible and logical, rather than `back to mother nature' reasons), selecting, buying, storing and preparing food from the point of view of where you are, what's available, and how long you may be at sea, and most importantly, managing your limited finances using the most rigorous criteria possible.
Here, Annie applies the basic principles of sound commercial management to all financial decisions (is this a better buy than that over time? can I buy now and save later?) and demonstrates a complete and intuitive grasp of what in the parlance of modern management theory would be called `Total Cost of Ownership Investment Appraisal' - a valuable object lesson for many senior management in some of the largest corporations. She writes about it in her own unique and forthright style, clearly based on many years of real experience, that demands attention and respect.

I read and passed along to my brothers/Dad who also went through it quickly and enjoyed it. Thanks to the Tacoma News Tribune who mentioned this in one of their sports columns.

Merriam-Webster Children's Dictionary Review

The definitions of most words searched have been easily understood by my nine year old son. Some definitions have necessitated my participation to provide a more simplified explanation. A further noted weakness of the dictionary is that a significant number of words fail to provide an example of its use in a sentence. A more consistent usage of this feature would have resulted in a 5 star rating. These faults, however, are minor and should not deter the reader from purchasing this dictionary. Some noteworthy unexpected strengths of the dictionary was the inclusion of a reference section containing maps of the world and seven continents, illustrations of the flags of the world, a list of the 50 states and their capitals, and a listing of the Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the United States. A recommended companion to the dictionary is The American Heritage Children Thesaurus.
