The Psychology of Entertainment Media: Blurring the Lines Between Entertainment and Persuasion (Advertising and Consumer Psychology)
Average Reviews:

For students or professionals in the field of media psychology, this book serves as an essential reference guide providing a wide, yet detailed inspection of entertainment media's effect on unconscious consumers. Although a required text for some courses of study, we found this literature necessary and quite informative.

The Psychology of Entertainment Media provides a cutting-edge look at how entertainment media affects its viewers, both in intended and unintended ways, and the psychological processes that underlie these effects. The collection represents an international, multidisciplinary investigation of an age-old process--persuasion--in a relatively new guise, which includes product placements, brand films, television programs, and sponsorships. The collection covers three broad areas:the potential effects of embedding promotions within entertainment media content;the persuasive power of the entertainment media content itself; andindividual differences in the interplay between media usage and media effects.Contributions focus on a variety of topics, including product placement, subliminal perception, narrative impact, cultivation effects on consumers, and individual differences in media use. Virtually all the chapters speak to the issue of how entertainment media are processed, with the conclusion that media consumers do tend to process entertainment and promotional information differently.Providing a broad perspective on how entertainment media may have an effect that goes largely unnoticed or unattended by consumers, this volume makes a substantial contribution toward creating a more knowledgeable field, as well as a more knowledgeable consumer. With its origins in the 21st Annual Advertising and Consumer Psychology Conference, the volume represents scholarship from prominent and emerging scholars in psychology, marketing, and communications. It is appropriate for advanced students and scholars in marketing, advertising, psychology, and mass communication; for research-focused practitioners working in marketing, advertising, and public policy; and for individuals interested in entertainment studies, consumer behavior, attitudes, persuasion, media studies, and consumer psychology.

Digital Signage Broadcasting: Broadcasting, Content Management, and Distribution Techniques (Focal Press Media Technology Professional Series)
Average Reviews:

Every ad agency or marketing director should have a copy of this book on their shelves. Marketing and graphics design students would also benefit. Digital Signs are becoming pervasive, from airport displays to retail stores to information kiosks, and they provide an excellent new revenue opportunity. This book provides a complete over-view of the current technology and applications for this rapidly evolving new medium, providing examples and applications. The book is logical and thorough. Reading like a series of classes, Mr. Lundstrom not only provides a discussion of the progression of digital signs from simple systems to complex, he makes difficult technical concepts easy for the non-technical person to understand. He frames key design questions and provides the parameters to use for evaluation of the solution right for a particular application: What type of screen to choose? What makes digital signs different from television? What kind of media server will work best? How does one feed multiple locations? At what point does the internet help? At what number of locations should one turn to a satellite broadcast solution? What is an edge server? How can one "stream" video? How can one mix "live" content with pre-recorded materials? What is a playlist and how does scheduling work? What is content management? The majority of the book is devoted to the evolution of a Digital Signage system, network designs and the current state of the art in distribution. Business people will find the Ninth and Tenth chapters most helpful for they focus on the gathering of content, billing concerns and operating considerations. For executives, Chapter Eleven lists a number of the applications currently used in the US and Europe, and discusses the idea of creating an environment to drive the consumer to use in inter-active and static viewing screens. The book does not provide a list of software suppliers, equipment manufacturers and system integrators, although a few are mentioned as examples. The author includes a thorough glossary and addendum outlining some of the more technical aspects of transmission calculations. It is clear he has worked with many of these different types of networks and has established a web site for continuing education and communications. It is full of information, most of which will not become dated so this book can remain a reference for many years.

Always On: Advertising, Marketing, and Media in an Era of Consumer Control (Strategy + Business) Review

Always On: Advertising, Marketing, and Media in an Era of Consumer Control (Strategy + Business)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This is one of the volumes in "The Future of Business from Booz & Company" series in which the firm's senior-level executives explain especially significant developments and emerging trends within major sectors of the global marketplace. (Booz & Company is the new name for the commercial side of Booz Allen Hamilton.) In this instance, Christopher Vollmer with Gregory Precourt focus on advertising, marketing, and media during "an era of consumer control." Moreover, that control is pervasive and expanding throughout a world that has become "flat." As Thomas Friedman explains, "It is now possible for more people than ever to collaborate and compete in real time with more people on more different kinds of work from more different corners of the planet and on a more equal footing than at any previous time in the history of the world." That is to say, it is now possible for almost everyone and everything in today's world to be connected in all manner of relationships.
To what does the title refer? According to Vollmer, "As with the Internet that helped to shape it, the new environment is `always on' because the consumer is always present: constantly seeking opportunities and value, taking advantage of the multiplying media around it, and (at the same time) being bombarded with ever more media in ever more forms." What about marketers? They are "'always on' as well: they have no respite or downtime because the rapidly changing nature of their audiences - and the means of connecting with them - requires continual experimentation, innovation, and shifts in strategy."
All of the authors of volumes in this series have the full benefit of a wealth of resources that have been accumulated during the completion of Booz's client assignments throughout the world. The specific observations and recommendations that Vollmer offers are research-driven and based on real-world information. For example:
How the 21st century marketing mix has developed and how marketing initiatives must change to take full advantage of it (Chapter 1)
Why an understanding of the 21st century is "the currency that trumps all others"; also, lessons to be learned from Procter & Gamble, one of the most successful digital age pioneers (Chapter 2)
How several media giants (e.g. ESPN, Time Warner, Vogue magazine, MTV, E.W. Scripps Company, and NBC Universal) have responded effectively to the "post-analog, always-on mandate"(Chapter 3)
How metrics that are both behavior-specific and action-specific (if applied correctly) can create a significant - if not decisive -- competitive advantage after completing a transition from exposure to engagement (Chapter 4)
Why advertising agencies need to understand what marketers now expect, indeed demand: "how much their actual value to marketers has shifted fro `the big creative idea' and `the most efficient media buy' to `the most sophisticated and innovative media planning.'"; also, why and how the agency of the future must be more than an advertising partner - it must be a business builder. (Chapter 5)
Then in Chapter 6, Vollmer reiterates that his book's title was selected because "there is no longer any downtime in advertising, media, or marketing. The pace is so relentless that the expression 24/7 does not do it justice. Think more in terms of 60/60/24/7. Every second a connection is being made with a consumer somewhere. So marketers, media companies, and advertising agencies must be always on." He then shifts his attention to the need for advertising agencies to complete the transition from Proposition 3 (i.e. segmentation of specialized services) to Proposition 4 that says, "We are all in each other's world. The more we know each other, the more helpful, relevant, and entertaining the marketing and advertising of products and services can be." Vollmer also discusses an exemplary agency, AKQA, and the lessons that can be learned from how its people fulfill a vision of being "an idea agency. It's not necessarily creative or media."
In less than 200 pages, Vollmer provides a remarkably comprehensive and cohesive examination of what he envisions as a "60/60/24/7" future for advertising, marketing, and media. In fact, what he has shared with rigor as well as eloquence reminds me of what Peter Drucker said ten years ago when he shared his own perspectives in what lies ahead for managers. "Predictions? No. These are the implications of a future that has already happened."
Additional notes and resources are available at www.businessfuture.com.

Don't Think Pink: What Really Makes Women Buy -- and How to Increase Your Share of This Crucial Market
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Women are the most powerful consumer force in the U.S., but they do not approach buying decisions the way men do. That's intriguing, but it doesn't mean that exhaustive demographic and sales statistics make interesting reading. Authors and marketing consultants Lisa Johnson and Andrea Learned explain how to direct your marketing efforts to women. Each chapter deals with a different subset of women - old, young, black, white, Hispanic, married, single - but the groups are compared along similar lines and the information is sliced the same way in most chapters. The authors liven up their exposition with short illustrative case studies, but the cases often feature products for which marketers have made no concerted, specific effort to attract female buyers. For instance, the decision to sell single servings of food occurred because of other demographics (more people living alone) and was not intended just to attract women buyers. Still, the thesis here is important enough to carry the authors' occasional tendency to twist product features to fit the theme, as well as their branding jargon. Acknowledging the significance of marketing to women, we recommend this information-packed book.

Watch This, Listen Up, Click Here: Inside the 300 Billion Dollar Business Behind the Media You Constantly Consume
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Who would believe that a book about marketing and advertising, subjects usually considered rather academic, mundane, and dull, could be exciting and very informative, as well as interesting to read. Well, here is one and I can recommend it without hesitation.

Now, there is one thing I can say with absolute certainty: the marketing and advertising of goods and services are changing rapidly. And this remarkable book, "Watch This, Listen Up, Click Here" by David Verklin and Bernice Kanner, proves it beyond all doubt. This is not a book just for the marketing and advertising professional; it is a book that will be enjoyed by all readers because virtually all of you out there are consumers of goods and services and most of you are joined, in some way or other and to some extent, to the electronic media matrix that is pervasive in our world today. If you watch television or listen to radio, if you're connected to the Internet, if you own a cellphone or other communication device, and even if you read print publications, you are affected by the world of modern marketing and advertising. There is no escaping it short of becoming a hermit in some unknown, faraway retreat, outside of the normal channels of the human community. There is good reason that the subtitle of this book is "Inside the 300 Billion Dollar Business Behind the Media You Constantly Consume."

I do have a personal interest in what Verklin and Kanner explore in their book. First, way back in the 1980s and for two years, I was the director of advertising for one of the largest destination resorts in the southwestern part of the United States. I worked directly with the marketing department, was privy to all of their selling techniques, and was required to design advertising and deal personally with all the media. Back then, of course, the advertising game was much simpler than today's since our attention was directed mainly to television, radio, and print publications. There was no Internet as it exists today, no cell phones, no IPods, no BlackBerrys, and "globalization" was a term sometimes heard in political discourse but it had not yet evolved into the economic buzzword that captivates the world market as it now does. Secondly, I have managed a website for ten years that depends almost exclusively on advertising in order to survive -- hence, I want to know what the future holds for marketing and advertising. Now that you have my caveats, let's briefly visit some things that Verklin and Kanner have to say.

From the very start, in the Preface in fact, Verklin offers the reader a tempting bit of text that's hard to resist. "Thanks for glancing," he begins. "That's really all I need from you. Guys like me will pay you for your glance. What I'm really after, however, is something more -- something we call 'engagement.' I'll reward you bigtime for that...." Glancing? That's all he wants me to do? Well, yes, but not quite. There's a lot more. First, the "glance." Then, of course, the "engagement." What does all this mean? That is what's explained throughout the book, along with an insider view of the multibillion dollar business that confronts most of us each and every day.

The book is divided into three sections: (1) The Lay of Medialand; (2) A Whole New Ball Game; and (3) Tomorrow. This last section contains only one chapter, something I mention now because the title of the chapter is a real teaser: "What's Really Sexy about Porn? (A Peek at What's to Come)." Now I have to confess that after perusing the table of contents, and taking note of that chapter's title, I immediately opened the book to page 201 and began reading (it's amazing how the words "sexy" and "porn" catch someone's attention!). I always suspected that pornography was first in line when it came to utilizing a new medium (e.g., very soon after photography was invented in the 19th century, it was put to use in the sex industry), and the authors confirm this for me. As they say: "If you want to know what media will look like tomorrow, look at what the sex industry is up to today. Even before the get-rich-quick schemers jump in, porn has landed, almost always the first application a new medium gets." This may be a sad commentary on human nature; nevertheless, pornography has been around for millennia and will probably be around forever. This last chapter, however, does look into the future of media and provides some informative speculation.

Now that the last chapter has been noted, let's get back to the book itself. I must congratulate the authors for the very clever chapter titles, most of them beginning with the word "Why," which is always a suggestive "teaser." The titles, in spite of the words used, are merely indicators and do not necessarily reflect the entire subject covered. Let me give you just a few that I thought were particularly provocative: "Why Newspapers Hate Craig and His Infamous 'List'" - Chapter 5; "Why Outdoor Companies Pray for Traffic Jams" - Chapter 6; "Why Wikipedia Ticks Off the Other Media" - Chapter 9; "Why Honda Hates the Internet...and Those Who Haunt It" - Chapter 15. One of my favorites was "Data Mining: Why Your TV May Think You're Gay" - Chapter 13. (I think I actually read this latter chapter right after I read the chapter on porn -- amazing what a teaser-term can do. Fortunately, this book can be read out of sequence.)

Suffice to say there is something in this book that will appeal to most readers. There's a discussion about why TV ratings are overrated, why Legoland is visited by grown men, why the Army's best new recruitment tool is a video game, and "Why the Smart Money Moved Its Chips from Poker to Bulls" - Chapter 22. All of the companies and trade names mentioned by the authors will be familiar to you and you'll learn some of the little "secrets" behind their marketing campaigns. And, finally, both authors are eminently qualified to write about this subject. Verklin is CEO of one of the world's largest ad-buying companies and Kanner (who unfortunately passed away shortly after completion of the manuscript) was a marketing expert and author of several books on advertising.

All in all, "Watch This, Listen Up, Click Here" provides a fascinating look into a world that most of us are not intimate with except on the consumer side. I would venture to say that, once you've finished this book, you'll never look at the TV, cell phone, IPod, Internet, or other media experience quite the same again. Highly recommended!

Media Today: An Introduction to Mass Communication Review

Media Today: An Introduction to Mass Communication
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I teach a course in Mass Media and this is the text we use. Regarding the other review left here for the book.. it is really not meant to be casual or 'easy' reading -- it is meant to be an in depth exploration of (often) complicated issues.
Things I like about the text:
- important vocabulary is pulled out to the margins for easy identification
- the importance of media literacy and cultural implications are explored
- various types of media are addressed *as well as* important tangental issues like conglomerates, advertising, etc.
- modern examples that are easily recognizable to students are used
Things I'd like to see done differently:
- The questions at the end of each chapter/unit could be better. Many of them are purely reading comprehension.. which is fine.. but I'd also like to see questions that require more synthesis or depth of understanding.
- It would be great if there could be some sort cross-reference done within the text.
Overall, I give this book high marks for solid information well presented.

James P. Othmer is one of the funniest writers at work today. Period. His keen eye for the absurdities of the modern world rivals the likes of George Saunders and Sam Lipsyte. You could sharpen knives on Othmer's sentences.
Prior to his 2006 debut novel, The Futurist, Jimbo was honing his mad skills in the advertising racket, as an exec at Young & Rubicam. And though I daresay it was a colossal waste of his talents, I, for one, am glad he endured it, or we wouldn't have Adland, a hilarious and insightful chronicle of the rise and fall of a modern ad man.
