(More customer reviews)Long story short: We wrote this book for two reasons: (1)We thought that it would have benefited us as freshman,(2)it was a lot of fun to write.
When we started this book we knew that at one point some sort of Purple Book had existed years before because freshman year one of our friend with an older sibling had one in his possession. I remember looking at it freshman year and being fascinated by it. A relic of Northwestern, a script of the voyage we were just beginning.
At the end of that year I was told that a friend in the year ahead was working on bringing back PURPLE. I was eager to get involved. Over the summer of 2008 I wrote the restaurant reviews for it. As the 2008/2009 school year got started I found out that they had run into troubles with completing the book. I saw it as a tremendous opportunity to get involved. I asked Sean if he was interested, and in the Spring we reached out to the guys who had been working on PURPLE the summer before, and bought it from them.
After a summer of endless correspondence with campus leaders, fraternity and sorority Presidents, athletes, and administrators we had a final product. We were proud of it, but thought we could do better. We brought Drew on as an editor and he helped us consolidate from a 300 page book down to 200 pages of the very best material.
Here is how we see it: if someone with a connection to Northwestern met a student from Northwestern, they'd want to hear about their experience. This book is simply a conversation with more than one hundred students who impacted this book in some way. It is a chance to learn about student life, social life, greek life, and academics at Northwestern.

(More customer reviews)I just finished reading The Happiest Kid on Campus: A Parent's Guide to the Very Best College Experience (for you and your child!). It was like taking a trip down memory lane with both my kids and their college experiences. If only this book had been written eight years ago when I sent my daughter off to college, I might have avoided many sleepless nights, worried moments, and confusing dilemmas during those tumultuous four years. My favorite quote from the book: "Life (and college) is 90 percent amazing and 10 percent difficult." It's the 10 percent difficult that Harlan Cohen addresses in his book. And it's that 10 percent difficult that ALL parents need to be prepared to deal with.
This book answers those nagging parental questions:
* Will my child be safe?
* How much should I be involved and where should I draw the line?
* How do I help my child adapt to living away from home and getting along with others?
* Is it OK to ask questions?
* How much contact from home is too much and how do I set boundaries?
* What do I do when they call home with a crisis?
* How do I talk to my child about sex, drugs, alcohol, academics, Greek life, roommates and getting involved?
Harlan uses tips and stories from students and parents to show us real-life college experiences. While doing that, he covers all the topics from the summer before college, to moving day, to the first few months, to parents weekends. On a personal note, while I was reading this book I was transported back to the early days of college when my daughter and I experienced so many of the college dilemmas Harlan discussed: overpacking for freshman year; dealing with a disagreeable and annoying roommate; living with her friends and regretting it; hazing during sorority rush; the freshman 15; struggling with certain classes and surviving; wanting to transfer because of a boyfriend; getting involved and finding her place. He addresses EVERY college dilemma with advice from his own experiences, other parents, students and college professionals.
If you're a parent of a college-bound teen, you should pick up a copy of this book BEFORE your teen heads off to college. It will prepare you for their years in college and give you that peace of mind knowing that everything you are faced with is all part of the college experience. Frommer's 500 Places Where You Can Make a Difference Review

(More customer reviews)I am not a big fan of Frommer's but the topic of this book intrigued me so I decided to give it a shot. I was a bit skeptical at the start, as a few of the first suggested activities felt more like "eco-tourism" (with the emphasis on TOURISM) than grandiose ways to save the world. Not that there is anything wrong with eco-tourism, but at least as I think of it, I see it as more the avoidance of a negative (i.e. "leave no footprint behind!") rather than the creation of a positive as this book claimed in the introductory notes was its mission. However, as I continued to read, I became more and more interested and amazed by the suggested activities, and convinced that yes indeed, these are places and actions where one really CAN make a difference in the world.
I love travel, but had never thought of doing many of things suggested in this book, largely because I had thought of them requiring a larger time commitment than most of us would consider reasonable. That is, most people can't take a year or two off to save the whales or feed the starving in India without serious negative consequences for their own life or career. As idealistic as many of us are, pragmatic constraints often come to bear. But one of the things the reader will quickly note about this book is that many of the suggested activities have a duration of a week or two, which is often a much more manageable amount of time. Many of the activities cost a good deal of money to engage in ($100+/day), which on the one hand goes to a good cause, but on the other can quickly make a large dent in ones savings given that travel to many of these locales is not cheap in itself. But many are not so expensive, and others are "free" in return for a hard day's work, meaning that one could live for several weeks or several months in an exotic locale for nothing more than the price of a plane ticket.
This book is nicely organized as well: not by location, as one might expect from a travel guide, but by theme (animal welfare, teaching children, etc.) which is helpful. If you are like me, you will find yourself naturally gravitating toward certain types of activities more than others, which means that some chapters will be more engaging that others on a personal level. Of course, this book is only a starting point, but that is the point: to raise awareness and spark the imagination. After reading this book, if you are left thinking "wouldn't it be great to do (activity X) in (country Y)?" chances are you can find a way to do this, through a short look around the internet or at the web sites of the specific organizations mentioned here even if it's not specifically mentioned in the book.
"Making a difference" is a noble cause, but it can sometimes sound too overwhelming to be attainable by the common man or woman without oodles of disposable time or money. Yet, this book provides a large number of specific ways in which making a difference really is possible. And of course, although this book focuses mostly on exotic locales, many ways of making a difference can be done right in one's own community. I went into this book slightly skeptical, but emerged thinking of ways I too could make a difference either through one of the programs mentioned in this book or through other means. Much of travel is done to benefit one's own wants and needs. This book does not criticize that perspective, but points out a way in which travel can help others as well.

This book shows that these same problems were a factor in the development, rise, and fall of one of the pioneer college football programs.
Book gives insight into the history of the University of Chicago football program. Book focuses on the policy behind opponent scheduling, maintaining the eligibility of marginal students, and the issues of money-money-money. Good review of Stagg's career at the school, where he was viewed as the most important figure at the university for most of his tenure. Fine review of the decision to discontinue the sport, the first school from a major conference to do so.

For this first case study of college football by a social historian, Lester has brought life to the story of a university football program that had an unusual beginning, a glorious middle, and a unique and inglorious conclusion. The nation's first tenured coach and the most creative and entrepreneurial of all college coaches from the 1890s to the 1920s, Amos Alonzo Stagg headed a program marked by creation of the letterman's club and by the dominant use of the forward pass, of jersey numbers, and of the collegiate modern T formation. (More customer reviews)50 interviews with people with ALL SORTS of careers at a ballpark--players, clubhouse workers, mascot, landscaping, announcer, ballpark vendors (food, beer, etc.).
My favorite interviews were the ballpark architect, the umpire, the shortstop who goes to art galleries when he travels around the US, and the "from Connecticut" ticket hustler.
I like that I can read one interview at a time or several in a row.
This would be a good gift for any man. I will keep it in mind for the impossible-to-shop-for 15-25 year old. It also strikes me as a good graduation gift because everyone in the book talks about how they came to have that job.
I am female 32 years with limited interest in pro sports...

(More customer reviews)The fact that the subject is baseball is beside the point. The authors have shown skill, humour, and insight in their ability to identify and highlight all the areas that go into making the game what it is. Some of the people are likable, some you even feel sorry for, but the tact, taste, and even the occasional lack of objectivity serve to make this an enjoyable read. (Coming from a family with many anthropoligists, I can say I've never read anything as fun to read as this.)
