Romancing Your Child's Heart Review

Romancing Your Child's Heart
Average Reviews:

ROMANCING YOUR CHILD'S HEART by Monte Swan is a tremendous book that combines solid advice for raising kids with fascinating stories from the life of a truly unique family. It is rare to find a book of this kind with such great insight, which has been gleaned from the Swan family's lifestyle - part little-house-on-the-prairie, part renaissance home. The pragmatic principles of spiritual child-rearing in RYCH are clearly illustrated by compelling tales of Monte's own upbringing, travels, and family building, all told with refreshing enthusiasm. (Actually, a lot of the adventures themselves are interesting enough even to be read to kids as bedtime stories.) Monte Swan, reflecting his background as a geologist with a keen scientific intellect and a remarkable ability to synthesize a variety of sources, weaves into his book the words and thoughts of a multitude of individuals, some famous great minds and others just successful parents. The material here is super practical, conveyed in a simple, direct way and never preachy. Monte simply allows the truth of his own relationships with God, family, and friends to serve the reader with a banquet of rich ideas and applications. My own three daughters are grown, but I have given them a copy of Monte's book to help them prepare for their own future families. I wish I had had this book in my hands 25 years ago. At least perhaps someday I'll be able to use it in romancing the hearts of my grandkids and developing in them a vision for the divine. In sum, I would highly recommend ROMANCING YOUR CHILD'S HEART for parents, grandparents, and parents-to-be who are serious about leading their children to Christ.

Parents can have awesome relationships with their children, but it is not enough to fill them with Bible facts, verses, and demand of them certain desired behaviors - you must first capture their hearts. When a child is young, parents can impose their will. When the child is older, however, if the parent hasn't won his heart, all the force in the world will only serve to drive him farther and farther away. How can parents win the hearts of their children? It all starts with romance - exactly as God woos us. Not just another parenting book, Monte Swan takes an entirely new approach to reaching the heart of a child . . . the way of romance. Desiring to lead their children to a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, parents will learn the very best approach to open the hearts of their children. Swan teaches parents how they can enter into the world of their children and give them not only what they long for, but what they need . . . an environment of total love and security from which they can conquer the challenges life has to offer. He demonstrates how any parent can turn the tables on the world and romance the hearts of their children to the love of God. With practical advice in real-life parenting situations, Swan equips parents first with the enthusiasm for the challenge ahead and then with concrete ways to win the heart of any child.

Average Reviews:

This book is full of extremely useful advice for any parent, but particularly for parents of adolescents and pre-adolescents with any kind of eating disturbance. If you've noticed your daughter or son eating less, noticed any unusual habits around eating, this book can help you figure out if there's something wrong and what you should do. These authors obviously know what they're talking about and know how to speak to parents on their level, not above or below. They use lots of examples of kids in all sorts of situations, which made their descriptions really easy to follow. This is an easy read, sometimes entertaining but always really informative, and really, really helpful for a worried parent who's at a loss for what to do with their child.

Mothers Who Think: Tales Of Real-life Parenthood

Most of the essays in this slim but powerful book originally appeared in the Mothers Who Think column on Salon.com, including a real winner by Anne Lamott. Although they vary tremendously in tone, subject, angle, and focus, all together they create a powerfully articulate image of what it means to be Mother. And I'm talking Mother in a minute, interior sense, not in the do-goody style of parenting magazines. There's nothing soapy or sappy in any of these essays - so read it.

As a single parent of a fourteen year-old daughter and a seventeen year-old son, I see the tremendous stress that my children and their friends struggle with on a daily basis. They are striving to be strong and independent while trying to balance the pressure to get good grades, deal with peer pressure and friends who are exploring risky behaviors, handle family tensions, and just figuring out to grow up to be the adults they want to be. This MUST HAVE book for all parents provides a realistic and easily understandable method of reconnecting with our teens, and gives us the tools we need to teach them not only how to handle the stresses they face now, but how to grow into resilient adults who will be prepared to face the challenges ahead. In fact, so much of the advice in this book is about raising children of any age to become strong and resilient, that I wish that I had read this book 10 years ago, although as a parent of teens I am finding it incredibly helpful in our everyday lives right now. This book also includes a special section at the end - one for pre-teens and one for teens that they can read themselves, and worksheets they can use to build their own stress reduction plan. My kids actually read this section, and described it as "cool", but I like it because it reinforces the strategies modeled in the book. If you buy only one book on parenting -- BUY THIS BOOK!

Pressured Parents, Stressed-Out Kids: Dealing with Competition While Raising a Successful Child

I've read a number of books on this topic and "Pressured Parents, Stressed-Out Kids" is by far the best. Dr. Grolnick and Ms. Seal sympathize with the pressures we parents are facing and don't seek to blame us the way certain other authors do. They offer real solutions instead of just lecturing us on the evils of overscheduling and competition. I also appreciated their emphasis on balancing autonomy with structure. They aren't in favor of permissiveness, a refreshing attitude for this type of book. Highly recommended!

Speaking of Boys: Answers to the Most-Asked Questions About Raising Sons

Speaking of Boys is delightful to read, by turns funny, poignant, insightful, and informative. Michael Thompson clearly understands boys, but even more importantly, he understands the worries and concerns that parents and educators and therapists have about boys. If you enjoyed Raising Cain, as I did, you will like this book even more, because it is written in such an engaging style. I found myself starting by flipping around to the questions I specifically wanted to know about, and then just decided to read the whole thing, since all the answers were so fun and informative and at times, moving. If you haven't read Michael Thompson's other book on boys, then I'd suggest starting with this one, and moving on to raising Cain if you want more background and theory and in-depth clinical cases.

Raising Money Smart Kids: What They Need to Know about Money and How to Tell Them (Kiplinger's Personal Finance)
Average Reviews:

With each generation the children seem to have more money available to them than their parents. With this should come responsibility and learning how to spend or save wisely. The problem is that most just learn to spend as soon as they get it, get it by begging parents or an allowance with no responsibilities involved or similar. Enter Janet Bodnar, deputy-editor of Kiplinger's Personal Finance, mother of three, and writer of the Money Smart Kids column in Kiplinger Magazine. This is not a collection of hard and fast rules to force good finance habits onto kids but a framework within which parents can use good common sense to handle any situation. The book starts with a quiz to test your money smarts. This quiz is excellent and presents most of the potential situations you are likely to encounter with children and money. The author even includes examples of questions kids ask and how to answer them. One of the insightful sections is one on how kids think about money and how to deal with these concepts from preschool to teenager. Ms. Bodnar even includes a fascinating chapter on questions and answers about money's history, composition, and dozens of other miscellaneous facts. Prepare your children to know how to deal with money when they are grown. Raising Money Smart Kids is highly recommended.

The Happiest Kid on Campus: A Parent's Guide to the Very Best College Experience (for You and Your Child) Review

The Happiest Kid on Campus: A Parent's Guide to the Very Best College Experience (for You and Your Child)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just finished reading The Happiest Kid on Campus: A Parent's Guide to the Very Best College Experience (for you and your child!). It was like taking a trip down memory lane with both my kids and their college experiences. If only this book had been written eight years ago when I sent my daughter off to college, I might have avoided many sleepless nights, worried moments, and confusing dilemmas during those tumultuous four years. My favorite quote from the book: "Life (and college) is 90 percent amazing and 10 percent difficult." It's the 10 percent difficult that Harlan Cohen addresses in his book. And it's that 10 percent difficult that ALL parents need to be prepared to deal with.
This book answers those nagging parental questions:
* Will my child be safe?
* How much should I be involved and where should I draw the line?
* How do I help my child adapt to living away from home and getting along with others?
* Is it OK to ask questions?
* How much contact from home is too much and how do I set boundaries?
* What do I do when they call home with a crisis?
* How do I talk to my child about sex, drugs, alcohol, academics, Greek life, roommates and getting involved?
Harlan uses tips and stories from students and parents to show us real-life college experiences. While doing that, he covers all the topics from the summer before college, to moving day, to the first few months, to parents weekends. He discusses controversial topics like drinking, sex, eating disorders, and even campus safety, offering parents direction and advice on how to discuss and handle them if and when they arise. He gets you up to speed on texting, Facebook and Twitter and discusses how to use them to stay informed and involved in your college student's life without being intrusive.
On a personal note, while I was reading this book I was transported back to the early days of college when my daughter and I experienced so many of the college dilemmas Harlan discussed: overpacking for freshman year; dealing with a disagreeable and annoying roommate; living with her friends and regretting it; hazing during sorority rush; the freshman 15; struggling with certain classes and surviving; wanting to transfer because of a boyfriend; getting involved and finding her place. He addresses EVERY college dilemma with advice from his own experiences, other parents, students and college professionals.
If you're a parent of a college-bound teen, you should pick up a copy of this book BEFORE your teen heads off to college. It will prepare you for their years in college and give you that peace of mind knowing that everything you are faced with is all part of the college experience. You'll worry less, sleep more, and ensure that you and your child have an amazing college experience.

Hi I am Mike Cooper and I'm 13 years old I loved reading Fly Fishing For Sharks. When I first got the book I thought that it was going to be very hard for me to read and take a while, but I finished the book in around a month. It was very interesting becuase I am from San Diego and I have fished at some of the lakes that the author fished at. I also learned a little bit about fishing. I think the most interesting thing about the book was all the interesting people that he would meet on his journey. This is a really good book and it is one of those that you can't put it down you just have to keep reading it. So if you like fishing or just like reading about interesting people this is well worth it and I recomend and buying it today.

The Pressured Child: Freeing Our Kids from Performance Overdrive and Helping Them Find Success in School and Life
Average Reviews:

No matter how involved you are with your child, it can be impossible to truly understand what is going on inside his/her school. This book gives parents a valuable look at what our children are dealing with every day. Mr. Thompson tells individual stories from the kids' viewpoints--extremely helpful. I saw my own child in his example of a boy who is "allergic" to school....and reading about this boy was like looking into the future. If I have any complaint, it is that the author didn't discuss the option of homeschooling as a positive alternative for some children like this. For those of us without many school options (no money, living rurally), his suggestion for finding a "better fit" in other school situations, did not apply. Our "allergic" son is doing great with homeschooling now and after reading "The Pressured Child" I'm even more committed to trying to keep him at home where he can learn to love learning....not dread school. Even if you have a child who has a "school brain" (as Thompson calls it) you should read this book to see how your successful child is actually getting through his/her day. I should note this isn't an "anti-public school" book-- but more of a look inside the schools so you can understand...and decide if your school is a good fit for your particular child. Fascinating reminder for all of us who have been out of school for a long time!!

The Co-Parenting Survival Guide: Letting Go of Conflict after a Difficult Divorce Review

The Co-Parenting Survival Guide: Letting Go of Conflict after a Difficult Divorce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I went through a high-conflict divorce in Connecticut in 2004, complete with restraining orders, police, and the whole 9 yards. As I saw the divorce approaching, I researched a great deal of divorce/parenting literature on my own, hoping to find a framework of something my (soon-to-be) ex and I could agree to work with, and I found this book. I read it and gave a copy to my ex. I also found an divorce/custody attorney who would focus on our children's interests, and his very first recommendation was to get this book and see Dr. Thayer in her practice jointly with my ex.
I'm grateful I had the expertise of Dr. Thayer to help me let go of conflicts I had with my ex. The guiding principle of the book and her joint practice (which is called The Peace Program) is to transform a personal, contentious relationship with an ex into a business-like relationship focused on the children's welfare. In a high-conflict divorce, this is a very difficult objective -- conflict can be blinding and all-consuming -- but it is possible, and the energy is of course better spent on the children. The book outlines suggestions to facilitate parenting business, such as a weekly parenting phone call (a business call) and a dozen Golden Parenting Rules. In the end, after the parents extinguish their fighting, the children get their parents back, and a good deal of their childhood back, because the parents choose to work together as co-parents. Through the 18 months I've been using this book, I find myself living in various chapters of it, depending on the evolution of my divorce. As the children get older, new issues arise, and the book remains on the top shelf of my bookshelf, where my most useful books reside.

Emotionally Healthy Twins: A New Philosophy for Parenting Two Unique Children Review

Emotionally Healthy Twins: A New Philosophy for Parenting Two Unique Children
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I only wish I'd found this book sooner -- it's the one book that's had the greatest positive impact on how I think about raising my identical twin toddler boys. Dr. Friedman hits it right on the head from the start: twins just happen to be born at roughly the same moment in time but need to live life as two unique individuals. And parents can help this process by enabling their children to have truly separate and unique experiences AND relationships that support the development of a healthy sense of self.
Dr. Friedman's discussion early in the book about the "twin mystique" sets the tone for her later observations and parenting suggestions. This "mystique" is a set of faulty ideals about twins that are held in popular culture: they inhabit their own private world that only they hold the map to; they feel lost without each other and want to preserve their twosome status into adulthood; one always knows what the other one needs, therefore twins are "each other's predestined partner and confidant."
I consider myself a thoughtful, educated and empathic person and parent, and never thought I'd fall into the mindset of this mystique, but this book totally challenged many of my beliefs about twins. And I thank the author for that! I don't pretend to know what being a twin is like, but I now know a lot more about the issues surrounding their healthy development. Friedman's personal story about discovering the need for alone time with each twin really struck an instant chord with me. I can't believe (and kick myself hard!) that I hadn't embraced this idea sooner - it's a remarkably simple solution to the overwhelming feeling of not being mom enough for two little ones who need a lot of your constant attention.
I agree, this approach has greatly improved our family relationships and I think it's also relieved our sons of the pressure to be together all the time. Heck, I'd want to kill someone if I spent every waking moment with them, who wouldn't? Our sons now have time just to be themselves without worry of how it's affecting the other - positively or negatively. And their happy little "reunions" after alone time away from each other are so sweet that I know we're doing the right thing for them. I hope this has set the groundwork for less sibling rivalry and fighting in the coming years. And generally happier children.
And that's not all -- the chapter "Fathers and Babies, Fathers and Mothers" is worth the price of the book, and then some. Not to be funny, but I think this book will save more than one twin parent marriage. It can be very stressful to navigate all the mental, physical and emotional needs of twins. Dr. Friedman very respectfully speaks about the care and needs of both mother and father and how each can better understand each other while parenting twin children.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. I have done just that, to every twin parent friend I know -- who are many. I hope you find this book to be just what you need to give yourself a break from guilt and frustration, and to embrace the amazing and loving task of raising two unique, happy and healthy people.

Most parents try to treat their twins as individuals, but most unwittingly undermine their best intentions because they lack a practical set of guidelines for raising emotionally healthy multiples. Drawing on her unique experience as a twin, the mother of twins, and as a psychotherapist, Dr. Joan A. Friedman outlines the seven key concepts for helping twins develop into self-realized, unique individuals and offers parents specific strategies for each stage in their children's growth. From how to set up the nursery to handling playdates and extracurricular activities, from deciding on same or separate classroom education to encouraging grandparents and other family members to think beyond the pair to see individuals, Emotionally Healthy Twins will become the standard reference for parenting twins.

Personality Plus for Parents: Understanding What Makes Your Child Tick Review

Personality Plus for Parents: Understanding What Makes Your Child Tick
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is EXCELLENT. Every parent needs to read it.
I have 5 children and this book has helped me so much to see
what makes my children different, and has enabled me to accept
them just as they are. Just one example-my third son has always seemed to be lazy. He is just not motivated to work. I used to worry that I was raising a lazy adult but this book showed me that he is a phlegmatic, and phlegmatics tend to be that way! They find the shortest way to do things and are unmotivated to get their work done. I now understand my little guy and why he is like he is-I can accept him as living according to his temperament. I could give several other examples.
This book is practical in that it lists the strengths and weaknesses of each temperament and gives ideas for parents on how to raise their children according to how they are. I loved that it pairs up the different combinations of parents and children.
I could go on and on but suffice it to say that I read the book in just a couple of days and learned so much that it's changed the way I relate to my children. I even learned much about me and also about my husband.
It's a fascinating, practical, life-changing book. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Now I'm off to read her book for adults, "Personality Plus". :)

Raising a Gifted Child: A Parenting Success Handbook Review

Raising a Gifted Child: A Parenting Success Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Raising a Gifted Child-A Parenting Success Handbook is a new release from Prufrock Press. Author Carol Fertig writes a popular blog on gifted children at the Prufrock press website, and has many years of experience as a classroom teacher and gifted education specialist.
In the introduction, Fertig states, "There is no one way to define giftedness and no 'correct' prescription for working with highly able individuals. Instead of giving you 'magic' solutions, in this book, I have provided a large menu of strategies, organizations, and web sites to help you help your child learn and develop." She follows through on her promise with an open view of giftedness and myriad ways to encourage learning and personal growth.
I won't run through every chapter here, but I will offer some of the highlights. Chapter One, "Who Is This Kid Anyway?" discusses reasons to test. The author also advises parents not to get hung up on labels or test scores, but to pay attention to strengths and challenges instead.
Chapter Two, "Understanding Gifted Kids" has a useful chart of concomitant characteristics of giftedness. Verbal proficiency, for instance, can be positive when it means a child is articulate, but also negative in cases when the verbal child dominates conversation. A goal oriented individual may get tasks done, but also may be seen as stubborn and inflexible. Recognizing particular tendencies and proclivities will help children to learn to focus on the positive aspects of their strengths. Significant time in this chapter is also devoted to perfectionism, and social skills, asynchrony, and the extrovert/introvert scale are covered as well.
Fertig is a former teacher and parent to two gifted children. In chapter Four, "Parental Responsibilities", she encourages parents to work on improving school situations and not just complaining about them. In her words, "To be effective, parents of bright children have the responsibility to learn as much as they can about gifted education, to work with schools and districts in constructive ways, and to offer enrichment and other learning opportunities outside of school."
Chapter Seven, "Specific Subjects" is full of many suggestions and links for parents and children to explore. Various programs, competitions, print resources and clubs are mentioned, and all are categorized by subject and described by the author. This section in itself is a good reason to buy this book. There are also further resources listed in the back of the guide.
Carol Fertig sees gifted children as unique individuals and her message is clear. She wants parents to know their kids, know their options, and be proactive about providing educational challenges.

The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy, Confident Kids Review

I have a ten month old daughter. I want nothing more for this beautiful little girl, than to be happy and confident. Kids are cruel, school can be brutal, and I'm hoping to get her off on the right foot with some self esteem. This book didn't really provide great advice on how to help her achieve that.
This book is more of a comprehensive guide to parenting. Much of the content is things I would have done anyway, sort of common sense parenting to those of us who care enough to read a parenting book. Many of the topics, while relavent to parenting, fail to relate back to the confidence issue I was looking for.
Having said that, there are a few good nuggets. My opinion is that this is a book that would best be checked out from a library, and not necessarily purchased for ones frequent reference.

This is a great book for parents who want to be involved in their kid's activities. The advice is practical and time-tested. The stories are fun and heart-warming. This book is an honest look at the challenges and rewards of raising responsible children.
