Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength Review

Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Body for Life" is an excellent book if you're a fitness beginner who's trying to figure out how to get in shape and stay in shape or, perhaps, someone who's been working out and/or dieting for a while and doesn't seem to be making much headway towards losing weight and getting in shape. Phillips does a good job of explaining the basic building blocks of fitness and of debunking a lot of the more prevalent fitness myths. He covers the proper way to exercise, both aerobics and weight training, proper diet, not some fad diet but rather how to eat real food in a healthy way, and how to motivate yourself and keep yourself motivated to stick to your goals.
There are a few caveats, however.
This is a very basic book. Don't think you're going to read this book and then know everything you need to know about fitness. It gives you a good foundation to build on but it doesn't go much beyond that. In my opinion that's a good thing given the book's target audience of fitness beginners. It gives you enough information to get started but it doesn't overwhelm you with data. Be aware that once you get into the program and have a better feel for your specific needs, you may find yourself seeking other books for more information but with the information you get from "Body for Life", you'll be able to make better selections of what type of books to look for. If you're already in good shape, chances are you already know everything that's in this book and if there is something you don't know, it won't be worth the price to find out.
Phillips owns a company which manufactures nutritional supplements. Not surprisingly he pushes the use of supplements in this book. There's nothing wrong with using supplements but they're expensive and not really necessary. They may accelerate the process but you'll still get into shape following the program without them.
Fitness is a lifelong commitment. Don't look at the title of the book and think you're going to get into perfect shape in only 12 weeks. Phillips' program is about using those 12 weeks to develop a fitness program you can stick to for the rest of your life. Ideally, when you finish one 12 week program you'll immediately begin another 12 week program and so on until it's not a 12 week program but a way of life.
If you're a fitness beginner and not certain where to begin or someone who's been working out for a little while but doesn't seem to be making any headway towards your fitness goals, this is the book for you. It offers good solid information on the basics of fitness and how to set and achieve your goals. I highly recommend this book.

Kurt Brungardt and family have done it again with this excellent source that targets the shoulders and arms. Full of routines and photos, I'd recommend this book to anyone. For men, broad shoulders and muscular arms are the archetype for strength and power. For women, the sagging underarm is one of the most common trouble spots. For both, defined deltoids make the waist appear smaller and separate the arm from the shoulder, creating an athletic and healthy look. Body-concious modern fashions make training the shoulders and arms a priority for everyone. The Complete Book of Shoulders and Arms is the definitive resource to train these muscles safely. Each exercise is illustrated in detail, ranked for difficulty, flagged for lower-back risk and accompanied by explicit instructions and specific training tips to achieve optimal results. The exercise routines are based on the most current research in sports medicine/exercise physiology and were created by top strength coaches, athletes, personal trainers, exercise physiologists, doctors, physical therapists and nutritionists. Programs are designed for everyone from the novice to the advanced enthusiast, for the corporate executive with time-crunched schedules and for the senior concerned with wellness.

Fitness Weight Training - 2nd Edition (Fitness Spectrum Series) Review

Fitness Weight Training - 2nd Edition (Fitness Spectrum Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for a book that would lead me step by step through a program for toning and weight loss. This book has it all. Instructions, starting points for weight on each exercise, suggestions of warm up and cool down, etc. There are three main programs outlined in the book, one for toning, one for strength training and one for body building. There is also a detailed section on how to set up your own weight training program.
I bought this book because I wanted a program to follow without paying for a personal trainer. It works! I was an absolute beginner and have been at it now for about 30 weeks - the results are great.

Now in an updated second edition, Physical Dimensions Of Aging by the team of Waneen W. Spirduso, Karen L. Francis, and Priscilla G. MacRae is a textbook resource and reference especially for students and professionals in need of the latest research concerning the physical process of aging and the practical ramifications for anyone working with the elderly, particularly in the field of health care. Chapters discuss changes physical structure, capacity, and endurance; motor coordination and motor control; psychosocial relationships; what distinguishes "physically elite" older adults; and much more. Charts, graphs, and the results of the most recent studies fill this serious-minded text, which avoids an excess of overly technical medical jargon despite its focus upon professionals and field trainees. Highly recommended.

The physical aging process progresses every day—and so does our understanding of it. Physical Dimensions of Aging, Second Edition, will keep students and professionals up to date on the outcomes of the latest research studies and their implications for the elderly in the real world. Physical aging affects us cognitively, psychologically, socially, and spiritually. The book discusses how people age physically and how this aging affects other dimensions of life.

The second edition of Physical Dimensions of Aging has been updated to integrate research findings on physical aging from more than 100 different journals in myriad fields, creating interdisciplinary coverage on the topic. It provides students and professionals with what they need to know about physical aging in order to conduct clinical research and to work with clients and patients. In doing so, it retains its landmark status as the definitive reference on aging.

Moreover, Physical Dimensions of Aging, Second Edition, focuses less on explaining the measurement techniques and research design and more on the outcome of the studies and their practical implications for everyday living. This approach will enable professionals and students to do the following:

-Understand the physical aging process and its effects on other dimensions of life.

-Apply the latest research in working with adults and the elderly.

-Become more effective in their professions. The structure of this new edition is more conducive to learning and features the following:

-Chapter objectives

-Key terms

-Sidebars of capsule research studies

-Testimonials, vignettes, and other tidbits that tie the research information to the real world

-Review questions to assist students in synthesizing and remembering the information

-Short lists of recommended reading for those who want to pursue the topic in more detail

-A glossary at the end of the bookThis second edition is organized into five parts. Part I provides an introduction to aging, to the field of gerontology, and to the research process for studying individual differences. Part II describes the physical changes in structure, capacity, and endurance. Part III overviews the factors related to motor coordination, motor control, and skill learning for older adults. Part IV addresses physical–psychosocial relationships, including health, exercise, and cognitive function as well as health-related expectations of quality of life for older adults. Part V highlights physical performance and achievement especially to showcase the results from consistent effort and hard work of physically elite older adults as inspiration for others.

At a time when many people are telling older adults what they can't do, professionals should be telling them what they can do. Physical Dimensions of Aging, Second Edition, will equip professionals to do so.

Bodybuilding 101 : Everything You Need to Know to Get the Body You Want Review

Bodybuilding 101 : Everything You Need to Know to Get the Body You Want
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I honestly have no idea how this book is getting the glowing 5-star comments of other reviews.
I'm interested in getting started in bodybuilding at home -- I have a set of free weights and was looking for recommended excercises, how to do them, etc. Based on the glowing recommendations of this book, I got it. It's just terrible.
It gives a little bit of weight lifting advice: a list of recommended exercises, with NO DESCRIPTION of what they are. For example, it says to to do a "donkey calf raise" but doesn't describe it.
It does have advice like (literally) "don't spit in the drinking fountain at the gym." I didn't need that particular bit.
It's very repetitive in the little bit of advice it does give -- it says to eat lots of skinless chicken breasts in about 5 different places.
I don't know who would find this book useful. Maybe if you're really into lifting, and want a psych book to help along, you could find it useful. In any case, it is absolutely useless for beginners.

Strength Training for Women Review

Strength Training for Women
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start off by saying that this book is available for free online, which is where I have read it, and I intend to buy it so that I have a reference copy. (I almost appreciate it being available free enough to buy it just because I support that).
I have recently joined a health club, and really wanted to try weight training. I had been feeling very intimidated, and this book has pretty much fixed that. I'm the type of person who likes to have a lot of information and think things through thoroughly, especially when I am a little nervous about them. All the background information about the different types of training and exercises really helped me to feel comfortable, though I can see how it might not seem relevant to those who have already been training for a while, or who are not the information junkies that I am.
The sample training plans and the descriptions and images of each exercise were probably the most helpful part of this book. I was able to read it, practice some of the movements I wasn't sure about at home without weight, and then hit the gym. I'm completely a beginner, and the level of information in this book was just what I was looking for to get me started since I can't really afford to hire a trainer.

Rugby For Dummies (For Dummies (Sports & Hobbies)) Review

Rugby For Dummies (For Dummies (Sports and Hobbies))
Average Reviews:

I received my copy of Rugby for Dummies this past friday, and have learned a great deal already.
I have recently become interested in learning about Rugby, and finding this book was a godsend. The authors talk about the game and equipment in terms that someone with no prior knowledge can easily digest. They resist the over-usage of jargon and where they do use jargon, they explain what they are talking about in a way that doesn't leave the reader sitting there scratching his/her head.
I plan to continue my exploration of the world of Rugby, and Rugby For Dummies has become my chief reference.
Kudos to the authors!

Everlast Pair Ankle Weight (10 pounds) Review

Everlast Pair Ankle Weight (10 pounds)
Average Reviews:

The last thing I wanted to do was pay $30 for ankle weights and I knew there are cheaper versions of ankle weights but you get what you pay for. The metal weights in the Everlast model are easily removable and it's comfortable no matter how many bars are attached.
I'm currently using these ankle weights to rehab my knee back from ACL reconstruction surgery. Each week I increase the weights (up to 5 lbs) max. These Everlast weights are more comfortable than the ankle weights I use when I'm with my physical therapist. Well worth the investment.
