NHL 08 Review

NHL 08

I have never before seen a game so perfectly improve on every issue its predecessor had. I'm not going to compare NHL08 with 2K8 because, frankly, most of the time that ends up becoming more a review of the companies than the product. Instead I'm going to compare 08 to 07, both EA games, and show the improvements in this game.
Graphics:
There is little difference between the graphics in 07 and 08, but that's not a bad thing. One of the main strengths of 07 was, in fact, its graphics engine, which looked beautiful, especially when running it in full hi-def. The models in 08 have a little more detail, but not much. One thing you will notice is how smooth 08 feels, though, as it runs at 60 fps instead of 30.
AI:
Here's the first major change. The AI in 07, both on your team and that of your opponent, was dumb. I didn't mind so much that your opponent AI was dumb, since I play most of my games versus a human player, but your teammates were incredibly stupid. You could have a 2-on-0 break and you might as well deke the goalie yourself, because the chances your player would be smart enough to skate with you were slim. In 08, however, the AI, both on your team and that of your opponent, is really good. First, that of your opponent. Defensemen will challenge you often. You may find that at the beginning of the game you can skate into their zone along the boards and setup, but after a bit they'll adapt to your style and make it difficult, which creates a fun (albeit sometimes frustrating) challenge. Your teammate AI is vastly improved, as well. Your teammates will setup at the point, which is my favorite pass to make. You really get the feeling that you can setup in the offensive zone, which, when you pass the puck effectively there, feels REALLY good. Powerplays now actually give you an advantage, since your teammates setup so well. Your teammates no longer run offsides like morons.
Skating:
If they had only improved the AI from 07, I would have been happy. That was my main complaint about the game. When I read the previews about this game and EA said they revamped the skating engine, I said "meh." Didn't seem like such a big deal, but I was completely wrong. You'll notice it as soon as you start to play, the skating is extremely fluid. You have total control of where your player goes, and it's extremely realistic. It makes it easier to avoid someone trying to check you. Since you can skate sideways, it makes it so you can skate around the blue line without accidentally pulling it back behind the line. Checking was revamped, too, and it's now much more difficult to line up a player, however it's realistic about it. If an opposing player is coming in along the boards you can line him up pretty easily; it's the open-ice check that's become difficult. That's a good thing.
Goalies:
One thing I loved about 07 was that the goalies moved realistically. You got the feeling that they actually were on ice and would slide. There were a lot of complaints about the bad goals in 07, and the were extremely frustrating. Most of the bad goals, however, were not from stupid goalies, but an unrealistic physics engine. I play goalie. It's pretty rare that you make a save and the puck just goes two feet straight up into the air, coming down on your back. Those things happen, but rarely. Typically, if you only get a piece of the shot, the puck will deflect AWAY from you. Of in FRONT of you. More often than not it'll go way out of play. In 07, though, the physics weren't quite right, and so those tough deflections when the goalie would just get a piece of it often led to bad goals. In 08, they didn't really play much with the physics engine, they just made the goalies better. And sometimes it's obvious that the goalie cheated so as to not let in a bad goal (the puck will be sitting on the back of his neck and he'll flop down onto his back to tie it up...without it falling into the net...?). The goalies now cover the post, which is an extremely nice touch. Goalie controls are much easier, now, as you're limited in how far you can move. You can only stay within the crease, which makes it much easier to stay in position. Goals that you score can quite literally come from anywhere; you don't have just one or two options in how you score. So a lot of the frustrating aspects of the goalies last year have been fixed; it just would have been nice to see the physics engine tweaked, as well.
Sound:
Gary Thorne and Bill Clement announce again in this year, and they've added a LOT of things for them to say. They still get a bit repetitive, just not nearly so much as last year. They do have great chemistry, and are not a burden to listen to like some other announcers (Madden, anyone?). One thing I noticed which baffled me is that Gary Thorne (he's the commentator, not the play-by-play...unless I got it backwards) sounds muffled in a lot of the things he says. The things from last year that are recycled sound just fine, but a lot of his new lines literally sound as if he phoned them in. It's not a huge complaint, but I just thought I'd mention it.
Online:
There's no lag. There's no lag!!! Finally you have total control over your players when online. There are new modes, one with team play and one with co-op teams, and online leagues have been added, which is a pretty cool feature since it means I can now play with my brother who lives thousands of miles away. One VERY annoying thing, however, is that the game will freeze here and there when connecting to the other player, and you end up having to reset the game. It's not extremely common, however I'd say one out of ten games will do this. After awhile it becomes frustrating.
I've never really gone too deeply into the other modes of sports games. I like to play the dynasty modes but I never really pay much attention to contract negotiations and the like. What's important to me is that the actual game is fun to play; everything else is secondary. All in all, after playing about thirty games of 08, I can honestly say I have very few complaints. The freezing glitch I'm sure will be fixed in a patch. Other than that it's a great game, and incredibly fun to play.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 Review

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay, first things first. The gameplay in Tiger Woods PGA Tour doesn't change all that much from year to year, and the 2008 edition is no exception. Sure, there are some new features and more golfers to choose from, but the improvements in gameplay itself might not be worth upgrading if you've already got Tiger 2007. Where this game does come through, however, is in the online options. The ability to play a match online is great, and Gamernet, which allows you to post challenges for other people to attempt and beat, is a lot of fun.
THE GOOD:
-If you're a fan of the franchise you'll enjoy the gameplay in Tiger 2008
-The inclusion of more LPGA golfers is a nice development for female players
-Gameface, when/if it works (the site seems to be unstable and many people haven't been able to make it work), allows you to use a picture of yourself to customize your golfer's face!
-online options are great, and the Gamernet challenges should appeal to people seeking producer points for posting difficult challenges, and those who want to earn player points by beating or "busting" those challenges.
THE BAD:
-New features are, for the most part, good, but Tiger Woods '08 is still basically the same game. Some more innovation would be nice.
-Gameface doesn't work very well for a lot of people, and I've found Gamernet to be pretty buggy as well. You can only have 3 clips up at a time, and taking down your old challenges so you can post new ones can be frustrating. EA seems to offer little to no support for anything related to the online portion of the game.
-The game is STILL buggy. EA released an update that fixed a bug preventing the Tiger Challenge from being completed, but the game still freezes up at times and some of the animations don't work. I've played entire rounds where my opponent didn't have a ball--he was just swinging at the ground and launching nothing into the air.
Overall, Tiger Woods 2008 is probably worth picking up if you don't own any of the recent titles. If you're thinking of upgrading from '07, however, you might want to rent this one first and see if the new stuff is really worth the price of a new game. Personally, if it weren't for the online aspect of the game I'd recommend buying '07 and saving the money, but if you like to play online this one might be worthwhile.

NCAA Football 11 Review

NCAA Football 11
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, NCAA Football was the reason I bought an XBOX 360 in the first place. I have played every incarnation of college football since Bill Walsh for the Super Nintendo. I've played through a whole season already, and here are my random thoughts.
CONS:
1. The game stutters. By that, i mean, that about every third game or so, right in the middle of the play, it will freeze, except for the sounds, and then start up again, and then freeze again. Really annoying, but it only does it for one or two plays, every third or fourth game.
2. I miss Lee Corso. He might be dumb (not as bad as Dick Vitale) but the commentary is severely lacking w/o him. For some of the commentary, my brain will finish his part, "but he just didn't catch it."
3. I wish there was a way you could control the frequency of the replays. A two yard gain does not warrant an automatic replay.
4. while the espn integration is nice, it gets old after a while, since it is pretty much the same thing, over and over.
5. Poor quality assurance. While explaining the type of offense in the loading screen, it states, "...total and control of team." Also, in the credits, it thanks Frenso State, instead of Fresno State. Adds to the rushed feel of the game.
6. The opponents (CPU) QB will sometime go to hand off the ball to the RB, but not give the ball to him, and the QB will keep running backwards for about 20 more yards.
20 July 2010
A couple of things I forgot to mention. There are also times my defensive coverage is holding up, the qb runs out of the pocket, my end comes up, goes to the line of scrimmage, and just stops. By the time i get control of him, the qb (computer) has already either passed it, or started running. annoying. another pain is the when you are on defense and you change the coverage audible (Y and then left) to blitz. EVERY DARN TIME I DO THIS, Brad Nessler has to pipe up with, "it looks like the defense is bring the blitz." once or twice is realistic, but when I'm playing someone, it's really really irritating as it is giving part of my defense away.
On a positive note, the receiver animation of him toeing the sideline to bring his feet inbounds has been changed for the better. It has better recognition of actually how close the dude is to the sideline, so if he is right on the sideline, he'll drag his foot, and then fall over, but, if he still close, but not that close, he'll drag his foot, and then stumble, but catch his balance. This is especially helpful if no one is around him and then he can take off again for a few more yards.
7. While some of the crowd shots are nice, it seems that some of the developers' girlfriends were used to model as there is a brunette with glasses and a blonde in every shot of the crowd. She will wear your school colors, but, be rooting for the home team when you are away.
PROS:
1. Graphics are awesome. From the stadium turf up to the players' uniforms. The helmets are especially realistic. It does not have the cartoony look of last year's version.
2. I like the no huddle option. Now, when you hold Y down, you actually get the whole play book instead of just running the same play again.
3. they put all the refs back on the field. Granted, you can run thru them, but it's still a nice touch.
4 The Alamo Bowl is finally placed in the Alamodome. The past few years, it was OUTSIDE.
5. a lot of the animations have been improved. Especially, the QB throwing motion.
6. First ncaa football game in a long time that is quite enjoyable to play.
Random thoughts: Right now, School Showdown is offline, and it's not worth it yet to play an online dynasty until EA fixes the servers. EA is aware of the problem. It's fun to also have specific sounds play at kickoffs, turnovers, 3rd and 4th downs. I do miss the ability to create your own fan sign which was in 2003 or 2004. I'm not big into recruiting, nor the road to glory, but I enjoy playing none the less.

I have every one of the last 4 series. Slight improvements. Would recommend if want this, but the NBA rosters changes so much, I'm getting tired of buying one every year. They should have updates or patches so we don't need to buy a brand new game every year.

NBA Live 07 Review

NBA Live 07
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, well, well.
Granted, it's only been a few days since NBA Live '07's release on the PS2 format, so I've only been able to play a bit. But I think I've - we've - all been suckered once again. Now, I absolutely refuse to spit out more of my hard-earned cash and upgrade to a two-thousand dollar home entertainment system and an Xbox360 (or for that matter, spend twenty bucks more for the Xbox version of the same game), so maybe I'm getting what I pay for. I don't know. But here's what I can say so far:
First, the upside --
1. Gameplay - The A.I. is noticeably improved over last years' edition. Players actually get up on each other and play physical 'D'. They push and shove, defensive players run parallel to a driving offensive player, guys automatically dive for loose balls, big men rebound (finally!), and playmakers run plays. The players don't 'skate' nearly as much over the court, it's harder to steal the ball, get open for dunks and layups, etc.
2. Marv and Steve - In last years edition, the commentary by the EA play-by-play guys wasn't exactly dazzling, especially compared to 2K's Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith. The sound-bytes were repetitive, bland, and often sounded like the guys were recorded on worn-out audio tape. Much better this year - they actually sound like they're conversing in real time, Mr. Bland Steve Kerr adds some oomph into his announcing, and the annoyingly repetitive analysis has gone waaay down.
3. The game hasn't crashed on me yet! (As opposed to - seemingly - the loading of each new game with '06)
4. Franchise Mode - Ahh. Simulation. While still not up to the level of 2K's NBA franchise, or EA's own Madden football, there's a heck of a lot more to do here, and they've ironed out some of the bugs.
As a GM, staff hires mean more, you have more money to work with (get the biggest budget you can from your owner - they'll give you different initial budgets if you exit the Mode and restart - and try to hire overlapping coaches with mis-matched high-grade training skills to get the best out of your player development), and the owner will give you more cash to offer for additional staff upgrades if you do a good job.
Team morale and chemistry are issues. Players make statements that as the GM, you'd better listen to. Some guys would rather play in larger markets, some guys whine about playing time, some guys seem perfectly content. Just like real life.
Your assistant coach serves to budget your players time, scheduling team practices, days off, media events, etc. - all of which affect your team and individual players growth. Now your weekly practices affect all of your team's players, and you can still set aside time for your coaching staff to work one-on-one with your guys to really develop their skills.
Draft day has had just a few simple tweaks, but there is one big difference: You can re-run this years draft, and pick the '07 rookies you think should've been on your favorite team. For all those folks in Portland who wanted the Blazers to draft the 'Stache, Adam Morrison, this is good news. But again, get the best scout you can afford, with a high skill evaluation level in each of the main areas (Athletics, Defense, Offense). Don't worry about hiring a scout with a regional specialty. I've not noticed any appreciable increase in info if my scout is a European specialist as opposed to one who is not, so this seems to be a wasted option. I haven't played my franchise past a single season yet, so I don't know if you lose your scouting info during the upcoming draft (like in Live '06). Let's hope not - that was incredibly annoying.
5. The little things in the game -- in-game music, the crowd and their reactions to sweet plays, chanting for defense during crunch-time, player reactions and celebrations, shot (and foul shot) animations, and more, are much more realistic and better integrated than in the past. Marv and Steve actually call some created players by their names, not just by their jersey numbers - about time!
And the cons --
1. For all the hype regarding the additions to the game on EA's website, there wasn't really much of an upgrade. To wit:
2. Graphics. Just like last year, the menu and in-game graphics are still blurry enough to cause migraines. At least on this platform - they might not be if you have HD and an Xbox360 and whatnot, but like I said, I don't, and I don't plan to anytime soon. This is really frustrating, simply because, in the past, this hasn't been a problem, and it shouldn't be an issue now. At all. Refresh rates are slower than ever, making the create-a-player option amazingly irritating. Court and player design is still weak too, although the players don't look nearly as bad as 2K's zombie-hoopsters.
3. If you hate to micro-manage, this isn't the game for you. The upgraded GM responsibilities are more annoying than fun. Here's another area where EA struggles, when franchises like 2K and Madden basically have the whole thing figured out. I want to create my players and staff exactly the way I want, all the way down to the itty-bitty details. I want to pick how my players and coach and GM look and act, right down to differing attitudes and shoe design, and then let the game run. I want to be able to create new players and add them into each years draft, set player attributes if I want to, and see my created and drafted players faces in their scorecard/statline photos.
4. Gameplay. Although better than last year, it's still not great. The 'Turbo' option is non-existent (you can't blow by anybody, even if you're a wide-open superstar - but the A.I. doesn't seem to have that problem), and guys look (and feel) like they're playing under water. The new 'X-Factor' inclusion is a nice idea, but really, how often is a second string point guard going to be unstoppable, especially with two bigger defenders draped all over him? Apparently every game. Why hasn't EA incorporated player tie-ups or the jumpball? Shot control is getting more and more difficult, yet after playing a couple games, I can still blow out a great team by 50, time-after-time. And the 'big' new features - setting practices, media events, days off, et al? Well, you don't actually get to see or play any of it. You only get a little teensy-tiny icon on your calendar indicating which type of feature your assistant has assigned the team, and the computer just sims right through them. Wow. I know the simulation of these options has an affect on the players attitudes and fatigue and all that, but again, if you're gonna give me a feature, make it worth my while. Give me some animation, or cut-shots, or something, and let me toggle the option on-and-off if I want.
5. Quality control - 95% of the computer generated players (via the draft) are whack. When did 6'2" slow, brick-laying shooting guards and 6'7" power forwards become the norm in the NBA? (besides with the Phoenix Suns, I mean) Here's another thing - I know things like player rosters and most of the photos used in the game are chosen or set before the real NBA's regular season starts. But why are there loading shots of Ben Wallace as a Piston? Didn't he sign with the Bulls right after the playoffs last year? And Al Harrington (unlike a statement from another reviewer here) is still listed as a free agent, and not on the Pacers roster. These are minor complaints, I know, but as cool as Big Ben is, how hard to find another shot blocker to use in the loads, eh? Or have the rosters right? Maybe the release day for the games should be pushed back a month, closer to the NBA's opening night...?
6. And here's a few odds-and-ends. Why can't I save my game DURING a freakin' game? Jeeez! This is such a simple and necessary option to have, that to not is incredibly frustrating. Locked items/NBA store - obnoxious and competely unnecessary. Give me everything I need to create my franchise right at the beginning of the season. Give me more body art options, and bring back the Thorns, dangit!
So there it is, so far anyway. I'll add some other bits and pieces as I play, but right now? Once again, EA's basically given us the same game as last year, but five dollars cheaper and with only a few bare-bones tweaks -- and a lot of the changes may really be more annoying than innovative.
How does it stack up to the unnoffical king of hoop games, 2K's NBA 2K7, or last years biggest NBA sim flop, NBA The Life? Well, I hated 'The Life' so much, I'm not even going to rent it this year, and as for 2K (also on PS2)... I'm playing it now, so I'll address that in the next few weeks. But judging from my own experience and the mixed reviews posted on Amazon so far, my advice is don't believe the hype, and rent before you buy.

Just purchased this game and it seems fun. Its alot like earlier versions, nothing really new or fancy. But its been a while since I played the earlier versions so its been fun thus far.
OK must know to play NHL 07. If you experience a problem with the menu not showing up when you activate the game, but yet the music starts, this is how you fix it:
Go to you graphics card settings, advanced 3D settings. Make sure that vsynch is enabled or turned on. If not, you will not be able to see a menu. Took me a little while to find this on the web. The EA support website sent me off on a different wild goose change. I set it and this worked. Sorry if you all know this already..just thought I would share.
