Perfectly Prep: Gender Extremes at a New England Prep School (Child Development in Cultural Context) Review

Perfectly Prep: Gender Extremes at a New England Prep School (Child Development in Cultural Context)

Sarah Chase provides a working vocabulary for us to discuss this sector of our society (affluent New England boarding school communities) and, at the same time, offers another arena in which to discuss the ways the stresses and pulls of adolescence affect boys and girls differently. She delivers on her promise to separate, skillfully and fairly, the issues that confront boys and the issues that confront girls with keen perception and careful research. Her prose is smooth and accessible, and she makes her points without judgement or animus. Bravo!
I can't help wondering if the co-authors of RESTLESS VIRGINS wish they could have read PERFECTLY PREP as part of their research on the adolescent behavior that caught their imagination.

Although New England boarding schools have been educating America's elite for four generations, they, along with their privileged students, rarely have been the subject of study. Living in a senior boys' dorm at a co-ed school, Sarah Chase was able to witness the inner workings of student culture and the dynamics of their peer groups. In an environment of ivy-covered buildings, institutional goals of excellence and aspirations to Ivy League colleges, the boys and girls acted extremely masculine or feminine. While girls typically worked themselves into a state of sleep deprivation and despair during exam period, the boys remained seemingly unconcerned and relaxed. As much as the girls felt pressure to be "cute" and "perfect," the boys felt pressure to be "bad ass" and the "best at everything." Tellingly, the boys thought that "it would suck" to be a girl, while over one third of the girls wanted to be male if given the chance. From her vantage point of sitting in the back of the football and field hockey buses, attending prom and senior pranks, and listening to how students described their academic and social pressures, competition, rumors, backstabbing, sex, and partying, Chase discovered that these boys and girls shared similar values, needs and desires despite their highly gendered behavior. The large class, ethnic and individual differences in how the students perform their genders reveal the importance of culture in development and the power of individual agency. This book examines the price of privilege and uncovers how student culture reflects and perpetuates society and institutional power structures and gender ideologies.

The Rise and Fall of the American Teenager Review

The Rise and Fall of the American Teenager
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Today, because of the massive American youth culture, we take the descriptive term "teenager" for granted. Young people enter their teenager years and seem to become part of another world, children no longer, but not full participants in the adult culture of work and responsibility. At one time, teenagers wanted to grow up rapidly, aspiring to take on the trappings of adulthood as quickly as possible, but today millions of young men and women seem dedicated to hanging on to their youth through their thirties and forties. Because of the pervasiveness of the youth culture, we have forgotten that the concept of a teenager is a social development and a relatively recent one. The idea of the teenager only occurred as America began to achieve relative affluence, when parents - whether farmers or shopkeepers - could afford to have their offspring attend school for a longer time. As these young people began to attend secondary school - and it was only in the 1920's when more than half of our children were educated through high school - and to have more leisure time, the term "teenager" was coined. It was this combination of time and affluence that made the teenager a young consumer to be marketed to. In "The Rise and Fall of the American Teenager" Thomas Hine shows the evolution of the concept of the teenager and the history of American youth culture. He is a professional journalist who writes with a strong narrative drive. He has an eye for detail and is particularly adept at choosing interesting subjects for his books and articles. By following young adults throughout American history, he has shown a light on a subject that has not been illuminated in the same way before.

Image Grammar : Using Grammatical Structures to Teach Writing(Bk & Cdrom) Review

Image Grammar : Using Grammatical Structures to Teach Writing(Bk and Cdrom)

There are many, many theories that involve the teaching of grammar within the classroom, however, few are successful when put into practice. I've studied a lot of them and tried some out to no avail. Fortunately, I had the pleasure of hearing Noden speak at a seminar and instantly realized that his ideas were highly conducive to the English teacher motto of "show don't tell." I got ahold of his book as soon as I could. I found out that Image Grammar utilizes authentic works of writing in an effort to model how grammar works within the writing structure; how it manipulates words to communicate one's ideas, tone, mood, description, etc. . . I have found that once your students understand WHY learning grammar is important to them as writers, as communicators, then they want to master grammar. They want to use it to make their writing sing like the professional authors' writing used to model the concepts. Image Grammar offers an authentic approach to grammar instruction that no typical English text book could possibly do. For the last two years, I have used Image Grammar in my classroom and have had more successes with my students collectively and individually. This year, 123 out of 127 of my seventh-graders passed the writing portion of the off-grade proficiency. I am convinced that Image Grammar helped put them over the top. Many of them profess to me that they now have a clearer understanding of grammar when they "see it at work" within a piece of writing.
Image Grammar if a very successful classroom practice. It goes beyond grammar and lends style to your students' writing.

Wrestling isn't just a sport to Bobby Zane and Ivan Korske. It's a way of life. From the midnight runs to the cutting weight to plotting maneuvers in their sleep, wrestling is all they think about during the winter sports season. Both compete in the 129-pound weight class, and both refuse to let anything stand in the way of the state championship title.
Beyond their mutual love of wrestling, however, Bobby and Ivan couldn't be more different. Bobby's school wrestling team is known throughout New Jersey for its winning record. His family, though rich, is troubled by his mother's long working hours and his father's infidelity, and news that Bobby's girlfriend might be pregnant leaves Bobby wondering exactly where his life is headed.
Meanwhile, Ivan and his small-town farming father are grieving his mother, who was a strong influence in both their lives, and Ivan's anger and loss are felt by everyone except for his neighbor Shelley, who encourages Ivan's talents. Ivan's only hope of leaving his backwater town of Lemmings is a scholarship to Western Arizona University, but his father wants him to attend college close to home.
Each chapter alternates a point of view, taking the reader through both Bobby's and Ivan's journeys to the state championship. Alfred C. Martino, a wrestling fan, brings the excitement of their matches into the story. Both characters have depth and devotion to the people they love, even though their commitment to wrestling sometimes eats away at their relationships. Reading this book will make you think twice about the dumb jock stereotype.

Playing With the Boys: Why Separate is Not Equal in Sports Review

Playing With the Boys: Why Separate is Not Equal in Sports

This book takes an in-depth look at the history of sports and womens inequalities and how far women have come. But it really make you realize how far women have to go. It is jam packed with examples of how segregating sports has lead to completely unequal treatment and how this not only effects top athletes but also all women. Women have proven over and over that they are not inferior in other areas - why is the sports arena any different? Let the games begin! I especially liked this book because the facts are so interesting and the authors presents them in a way that makes the book entertaining as well as informative. Anyone interested in gender equality would enjoy this book.

Athletic contests help define what we mean in America by "success." By keeping women from "playing with the boys" on the false assumption that they are inherently inferior, society relegates them to second-class citizens. In this forcefully argued book, Eileen McDonagh and Laura Pappano show in vivid detail how women have been unfairly excluded from participating in sports on an equal footing with men. Using dozens of powerful examples--girls and women breaking through in football, ice hockey, wrestling, and baseball, to name just a few--the authors show that sex differences are not sufficient to warrant exclusion in most sports, that success entails more than brute strength, and that sex segregation in sports does not simply reflect sex differences, but actively constructs and reinforces stereotypes about sex differences. For instance, women's bodies give them a physiological advantage in endurance sports, yet many Olympic events have shorter races for women than men, thereby camouflaging rather than revealing women's strengths.

I am not usually a reader, but I had a hard time putting this book down. Swidey does an excellent job capturing what has been an incredible story in Boston over the past few years. It's about basketball but, it is also about so much more. He describes how the aftermath of school desgregation in Boston has left the public schools in crisis, and how having someone who cares can make such a huge diffrence.
