Flow in Sports by Susan A. Jackson is a well written, clear, practical manual that offers well grounded advice to any level athlete. This is the best book I have seen on the topic since the original classic by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi because it delivers the concepts without fanfare. Flow is just another practical took for the modern day athlete, the same as good nutrition and dedicated practice schedules. This tone and the plentiful, flow-accurate blurbs from atheltes in several different sports, make for a fun and exciting read. Every athelete will identify with the concepts and find inspiration to expand on the methods in their own specific sports training.

"
The experience of flow is still one of the least understood phenomena in sport. And yet it is one of the richest, most memorable experiences an athlete will ever know.

Some call it a natural ""high."" Others refer to it as being ""in a zone."" Whatever it's called, flow is an elusive and very sought-after psychological state that athletes, coaches, and sport psychologists have tried to understand, harness, and employ to their benefit since Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi first coined the term back in the early 1970s.

Now, in the first book devoted exclusively to flow in sports, the pioneering legend Csikszentmihalyi and sport psychology researcher Susan Jackson attempt not only to explain the phenomenon but also to identify the key conditions associated with its occurrence.

The book begins with a description of what flow is and is not. Flow is defined as a person's total absorption into an activity. While it is always a peak, satisfying experience, it is not necessarily associated with peak performance on every occasion.

Most of the book delves deeply into the key factors leading up to and accompanying the flow experience. The authors also recommend certain actions on the part of the athlete or coach to optimize the conditions in training and performance that allow flow to occur. The book is full of vivid examples, captivating quotes, and revealing research findings that enhance the authors' clear and insightful text.

The sport setting is rife with opportunities to experience flow-be it in pick-up games or the Olympics. But until now, flow has been an infrequent, accidental, and even mysterious phenomenon to most athletes. With Flow in Sports, this optimal experience becomes both more familiar and more achievable. Get to know flow, and get into it. Find out what you've been missing.

Your body is supposed to enjoy getting and staying fit! The author gives a number of instructions on how to do just that. His argument for nasal breathing, even at top exertion, is alone worth the price of the book. The many testamonials from athletes who've used the author's instructions successfully shows that I'm not the only one it's worked for.

ESPN The Company: The Story and Lessons Behind the Most Fanatical Brand in Sports Review

ESPN The Company: The Story and Lessons Behind the Most Fanatical Brand in Sports
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's hard for your average author to effectively chronicle a company's growth. You have to draw out lessons and patterns from decades of details. You have to put your own biases aside to tell the story as it was. At the same time, you need to make readers understand the importance of how the company handled the challenges inherent to its evolution.
It takes the right combination of mind and skills to pull this kind of thing off. And that's exactly what authors Anthony F. Smith and Keith Hollihan manage to do in "ESPN: The Company."
"ESPN: The Company" pulls you into life at ESPN through vivid character and company descriptions. You learn by vicariously participating.
That's what consultant Anthony F. Smith did during his 20+-year tenure with ESPN, though he experienced the company firsthand. He joined with McKinsey just as ESPN was gaining traction as a startup. He stayed all the way through to its current incarnation as a $30 billion sports media giant.
In those years, he grew intimate with the people, culture, and strategy of ESPN. He and cowriter Keith Hollihan chronicle the highlights of those years: The prominent personalities within the company, the victories and losses, and the lessons learned.
Each of the book's eight chapters covers a guiding principle to ESPN's success. Those guiding principles helped ESPN evolve from idea to empire, but could be applied to any company wanting to stay competitive and creative while ascending competitive ladder.
Individually, each principle can be applied to any company. Taken together, though, they are the unique formula that led to ESPN's success.
Principles include:
*Turn Fanatics into Fans: Make your business all about the customer, and hire fanatics to work for you.
*Think like an incumbent, but act like a challenger: Let your innate insecurities drive your achievement. Believing you are the best while being driven by doubts can be a good thing.
*Find the right leader at the right time: Every stage of an organization demands a different type of leadership. Surround yourself with other leaders who compensate for your weaknesses.
*Expand your brand: Let your mission drive your brand, not vice-versa. Protect the brand more aggressively than you expand it.
While chronicling ESPN's story, Smith also explains how it developed and kept its winning formula. For example, ESPN started up with a hungry, passionate, hardworking culture. Smith explains how they were able to keep it intact even after they grew large.
Smith also details how the company created the markets it now dominates. In another, especially strong chapter, he describes how each of the company's leaders contributed to the right growth at the right time. He also breaks down how ESPN harnessed its employees' and fans' passion to gain business wins.
These are lesson every business should learn.
"ESPN: The Company" rewards readers with company intimacy and wisdom. The authors incorporate tidbits from a variety of sources to add nuance to the story. These include quotes, anecdotes, cable TV industry history, anthropology, and organizational science.
This richness helps you feel like you're participating in ESPN's story. You come out of each chapter having learned through your reading experience. The authors recap lessons in a short summation at the end of each chapter. The book's tone, while deeply respectful of ESPN, doesn't make bones about the contentious aspects of the company's growth.
Conclusion: The book's a winner.
A book is a success when it makes you respect a company you formerly knew little about. It is a success when you feel like you've experienced, rather than read, the story within. Ditto if it makes you want to read more of the authors' work.
ESPN: The Company did all three for me. I highly recommend it.

As we mark the 30th anniversary of Title IX of the Education Amendments we take notice of its impact on the number of girls and women now playing team sports. The opportunities for girls and women to compete on the playing fields have increased greatly in the last years. Playing Like a Girl outlines the battles fought to get to this stage and shows how playing team sports gives females the confidence that they can succeed, thus leading to greater strength and self esteem. As a former school librarian I encourage all school libraries to purchase multiple copies of this book....and watch them fly off the shelves !!! Linda Lusskin

Will to Live: Dispatches from the Edge of Survival

I was a a big fan of Les Stroud's Survivorman and Beyond Survival. His way of conveying survival instincts and tactics always appealed to me more than other survivalists in the field and TV.
This book is not just about Les Stroud's survival tactics (though they are sprinkled throughout the book), it mostly showcases and critiques other instances of amazing survival stories. Les offers his analysis and compares it to his own experiences. From the infamous Old Christian Rugby Team plane crash high in the Andes to Yossi Ghinsberg who miraculously survived alone in the Amazon for many days, and several other stories.
Some of the chapters are about his own experiences (some shown on Survivorman). My personal favorite was his trip to the Amazon with the Waorani. The chapter explained much of the background to that Survivorman episode, including his frantic chase with a Jaguar! Some nice full color photos are shown in the middle of Les in various locations when shooting Survivorman.
One of the coolest features in the book are Les's lists of survival necessities for certain situations and lessons to keep you out of harms way. From learning how to survive in quick sand to avoiding snow blindness, and supply lists, I can actually hear Les's voice explaining his thoughts for each of these.
If you are a die hard fan of Les Stroud or just an adventurist or survivalist I highly recommend this book. I read it practically in one night, and plan to re-read it in the next few weeks. There is so much to each story of survival not just about making it out alive, but the strength of the human spirt in hard times.

In a survival situation, a wrong decision could spell the difference between life and death.

No one knows this better than Les Stroud, who has survived everywhere from the sun-scorched sands of the Kalahari to the snake-infested jungles of the Amazon. In Will to Live, Les examines many incredible true life survival stories-explaining what happened and why, and offering valuable perspectives on what went right, what went wrong, and what could have been done differently. The tales in Will to Live include:

Chris McCandless-the subject of the book and movie Into the Wild. Yossi Ghinsberg-who survived alone in the Amazon for twenty-one days.

Douglas Mawson-the Antarctic "superman" who survived three hellish months at the bottom of the planet.

Nando Parrado-who was trapped for two months high in the Andes after a plane crash killed his friends and family.

Plus . . . stories from Les's own experiences, along with practical sidebars with tips on how to escape quicksand, butcher a moose, cross a snow-covered crevasse, and more.

Provocative and entertaining, Will to Live is a compilation of history's most intriguing survival stories from one of the world's foremost experts.

The Hustle: One Team and Ten Lives in Black and White Review

The Hustle: One Team and Ten Lives in Black and White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved it! "The Hustle" is a unique and intelligent book. On one level, it can be read as an intriguing tale about 10 boys - black and white, rich and poor -- who came together at age 14 to play basketball together for a season in Seattle. They won the state championship that year, and then went their separate ways. The book is an effort to find out what happened over the past two decades to these boys - how they grew into men, and whether the team, as an integration experiment, made a difference to each of their lives. The guys themselves are pretty interesting: they include a prosecutor who tried the notorious Green River Killer, a dot-com millionaire-turned hedgefund manager making a killing of Seattle's economic boom, a recovering crack addict, a weed dealer struggling to get out of the trade, a former hustler turned pentacostal minister, and a reclusive wine maker in Oregon. Tragically, one of the star players on the team was brutally murdered, which is a shock that propels the book and makes others on the team ponder their own life chances and luck.
On a deeper level, "The Hustle" can be seen as an exploration of race and class in America over the past 30 years (indeed, longer, as Merlino puts each character in a much larger historical context). Merlino uses the tales of each individual boy on the basketball team -- with all their struggles, their successes, their woes, their joys, their personal histories and families -- to open a window on a different aspect of American life during the past 20 years, all with Seattle as the backdrop: the dotcom boom and the instant millionaires, the crack era and the war on drugs, the challenges of creating a diverse community in elite schools, the struggling public education system, gentrification and its impact, and manhood in a time of economic and cultural uncertainty.
It is at once very personal, and at the same time "big picture" -- looking at the political, economic and cultural changes of the past twenty years, and how this group tries to find and define their own space as men on this shifting canvas. If you are a sports fan or played group sports as a kid, you will relate to the games and the comraderie described in the book. Even if you are not a sports fan (I like sports, but am not a massive fan), the use of the team as a tool to explore larger issues is still highly compelling.
Definitely worth a read.

Awesome. One of the best books on sports I've read in years. Kalb and Weinstein take you through some of the biggest moments in sports that you've always wondered about and manage to introduce you to some conspiracy scenarios that you never knew about before. The writing style is fun, yet authoritative and leaves you thinking, "Wow, could that really have happened that way?" The chapters on the Patriots and UNLV/Duke are particularly outstanding. I highly recommend this to both conspiracy nuts and sports nuts alike. It's also a great read for lovers of truth and non-fiction.

In The 30 Greatest Sports Conspiracy Theories of All Time, long-time TV sports statistician and self-professed skeptic Elliott Kalb examines the most notable conspiracies in sports history, from Major League baseball, the NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA, Olympics, NASCAR, the horse track and the prize ring.
Separating fact from myth, Kalb attempts to determine which of these long-held conspiracy theories hold water, and which ones fall flat under scrutiny. Ranking the conspiracies from 1 to 30 and the likelihood of each conspiracy from 1 to 5, Kalb boldly asks:
Did baseball avoid integration in the 1930s and 1940s with an unwritten agreement?
Was Super Bowl III a fixed game?
Did Sonny Liston throw both of his fights vs. Muhammad Ali?
Was the NBA's first-ever draft lottery fixed?
Why did Michael Jordan really retire from basketball the first time?
Are some NASCAR race outcomes too good to be true?
Did the New England Patriots cheat their way to a dynasty?
What really happened at the 1921 Kentucky Derby?
Why weren't any Japanese players signed to major league contracts from 1965-1995?
And much more!
