The Billion Dollar BET is a biography that will surely have you reading until the very last page. The author provides a very clear picture of the man Robert Johnson. From the details of his humble beginnings to his educational background and finally into the business world, Brett Pulley provides the recipe of success that led Mr. Johnson to his ultimate goal of being media titan. This book is a must read for all young entrepenuers as it provides several key lessons that must be mastered if one is to dedicate themselves to an emerging business.
Finally the book is done is with great respect for Robert Johnson as the author dives into all topics, he choses to note how the personal challenges affected his business performance and business relationships.
I am certainly looking forward to Mr. Pulley's next book.

Mastering MultiCamera Techniques: From Preproduction to Editing and Deliverables Review

Mastering MultiCamera Techniques: From Preproduction to Editing and Deliverables

This book, MASTERING MULTICAMERA TECHNIQUES, is a thoroughly comprehensive look at cinematography and the digital editing process. This is NOT one of those cheesy how-to-lighting books that seems to be given away with every camera ever made. No! This is cameramen and camerawomen taking you within inches of performers, like Paul McCartney and Elton John, in a live concert setting. This is backstage where gaffers and technicians set up their equipment and do sound check while engineers in the editing room monitor multiple camera angles over David Letterman's studio soundstage. This is part text-book, part insider's information, part university course for interested persons who'd like to work behind the scenes in film, theatre, television or perhaps to have the practical information on creating her/his own production company.
This really is a phenomenal book.
It is essentially a marriage between two departments: the audio/visual and the digital editing departments. Everything that you need, think you need and things you probably wouldn't have thought about are discussed here.
Preproduction. The author, Mitch Jacobson, discusses topics ranging from organizing personnel, the kinds of recording equipment, archiving to post-production facilities and costs.
Production. Types of multi-camera productions, setting up in various venues, studios and stadiums. The logistics of setting up equipment. "On Shoot Day," he discusses the floor plans from what tools to use to power the equipment, the location of the crew, to the art of "camera matching." Beautiful photographs show how various camera angles are fed and synched to the editing room where we see how the production of the David Letterman show is carried out.
* Timecode and Synch Methods
* Computers and Editing Codecs
* Nonlinear Editing Software programs--Apple, Avid, Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas and Grass Valley's Edius. (Edius...didn't see that coming!)
* Preparing the Project For Editing.
* Grouping and Synching Angles.

* Cutting Music and editing with multiple performances
* Sitcoms and Comedy

Most of the 17 Focal Press titles I own are either above average or excellent. A few are so well done that they necessitate purchase because you will find someone, whether yourself or someone who wants to get into the industry and you know that such a publication would be invaluable. So you buy it to support the author for a job well done and you, perhaps, pay-it-forward as a gift to a deserving individual or institution. If you feel this way, then along with Directing the Documentary, Fifth Edition, How to Make Animated Films: Tony White's Complete Masterclass on the Traditional Principals of Animation and The Complete Film Production Handbook, Fourth Edition ...
MASTERING MULTICAMERA TECHNIQUES should be at the top of your list.
Beyond 5 stars.

Producing for TV and New Media, Second Edition: A Real-World Approach for Producers Review

Producing for TV and New Media, Second Edition: A Real-World Approach for Producers

This book has great information and really helped me get a feel for all the different facets of producing a TV show. However, it was most frustrating and aggravating to me that a companion website was referenced everywhere with what looked like would be a great place to see sample forms and documentation, etc. but every time I tried to visit the website it was "Under Construction" and to "check back soon!" Well I have been checking since November 2008 and there is still no website! Focal Press needs to get on the ball if a book is released with companion website information than the website should be released the same day as the book! I have also sent e-mails to there customer service and called with no response as to when the site would be completed.
