VIVA Travel Guides Peru: Exploring Machu Picchu, Cusco, the Inca Trail, Arequipa, Lake Titicaca, Lima and beyond

Viva Travel Guides is the newest entrant in the crowded field of travel guidebooks. As can be said of many youngsters, it has potential but needs discipline and polish. Much of the writing is pedestrian, repetitive, and sloppy; the book is full of typos and bad grammar; and it contains some whoppers of misinformation and tortured geography.
I lived in Cusco for a year a few years ago and know Southern Peru well. I bought this book to see how it measures up to the more established guides. While it is certainly serviceable, and will get you around the country without major mishap, it desperately needs a sharp-eyed editor to tighten and focus the writing, and correct the inaccuracies. The book is published using print-on-demand technology; the text and cover look fine, but the maps are low-resolution and at times indecipherable.
One fault is its repetitiveness. Each section opens with an introduction, then a "Highlights" section, then more specific city listings. This results in needless repetition. For example, in the Arequipa section, the fact that Arequipa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site is mentioned three times in five pages.
Another fault is sloppy writing. The sheer number of nonexistent words shows they didn't run it through a spell checker before going to press. And if you don't know the difference between "its" and "it's," or "lie" and "lay," hire someone who does to edit your manuscript.
More damning---or amusing, depending on your point of view---is the inaccuracies. The book states that the road from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado goes "over the peak of Ausungate." Fortunately, the engineers left the 6,400m (21,000 ft.) peak to the glaciers and ran the road far below. In the Amazon section, the book says, "Most of the hotels and lodges in the Peruvian Amazon are in the cities of Iquitos, Manu and Tambopata." Sorry, but Manu and Tambopata aren't cities. Also in the Amazon, it describes a flight to Boca Manu leading to a stay in a Machiguenga lodge at Pongo de Mainique. In two sentences we are whisked from the Manu River to the Urubamba River, far to the west.
All guidebooks contain errors, but the Viva book is especially egregious. Given the higher-quality alternatives on the market, give this one a pass until they hire copy and content editors to whip it into shape.

Representing: Hip Hop Culture and the Production of Black Cinema Review

Representing: Hip Hop Culture and the Production of Black Cinema

I highly recommend this book. It is very enjoyable and informative reading that is right on target for insight into the Black Urban Culture, the rise of Hip Hop and it's influence on Black produced American film. It was used as a main text for a Rap and Black Cinema university course successfully. Although very sociology based, it was understood by college students of other majors who appreciated the book's honesty of a much maligned topic.

In this engaging and provocative book, S. Craig Watkins examines two of the most important developments in the recent history of black cinema—the ascendancy of Spike Lee and the proliferation of "ghettocentric films." Representing explores a distinct contradiction in American society: at the same time that black youth have become the targets of a fierce racial backlash, their popular expressive cultures have become highly visible and commercially viable."Watkins is at his most sophisticated and persuasive when he explains the surprising success of hyper-talented, entrepreneurial, and energetic black artists."—Archon Fung, Boston Book Review

Lonely Planet USA Review

Lonely Planet USA

Whilst I didn't enjoy this guide as much as some of the other Lonely Planet books I have previously used, this was nonetheless a handy addition to a trip of nearly 3 months covering 9 States.
Whilst I wouldn't recommend it for short trips or 1 state visits for longer trips then I think it is worth the money - even if you just need tips and advice on budget accommodation, motels and restaurants.
Let's face it, trying to cram 50 States worth of information into one publication is not an easy task but in my opinion I feel that this book along with the rest of the Lonely Planet series continue to be the easiest to use and best guide books available.
If you are planning on only visiting a few States or visiting for a short break then my advice would be to either buy an indiviudal guide for the relevant State/City, check the internet for useful information or ask someone else who has been before.
For those of us who cannot lug or afford up to 50 separate books or are on a budget trip of some sort would find this guide useful if not at least for the information regarding local culture and customs.

On My Honor: Boy Scouts and the Making of American Youth Review

On My Honor: Boy Scouts and the Making of American Youth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very thoughtful, very provocative look at Scouting -- not only the Boy Scouts of America as an organization, but the experience of being a Scout for one troop of boys and their adult Scout leaders. The book keeps details of this experience in the foreground -- you really get to see what the Scouts do at their summer encampment, hear what they have to say, the kinds of jokes and stories they tell, and so on - but it also examines these details for what they reveal about young boys becoming older boys and older boys becoming men. All this works because the book is a good read, not only as a story (of one troop's summer camping adventure) but also as a meditation on adults and kids, American life in these modern times, and so on.
Some readers and reviewers may try to pigeon-hole the book as a critique of Scouting, or focus only on the policy issues (i.e., how the BSA has handled issues of God, Gays, and Girls), but that's way off base. The author certainly gives some attention to these issues and he is critical of some official BSA positions. But he's also clearly sympathetic towards the Scouting experience, and he's smart about what's going on for kids of Scouting age. A fan of scouting who's taking a close look and asking important questions that go well beyond Scouting in their implications. Highly recommended.

Is It a Date or Just Coffee: The Gay Girl's Guide to Dating, Sex, and Romance

Forty years of heterosexual living did not prepare me for the dilemma of discerning IS IT A DATE OR JUST COFFEE when I started dating women. Well, perhaps dating was too strong a word since it always seems to turn out to be coffee. When straight gals meet straight guys, they know what to expect. With gay-gal dating, they seem to be showering together before reaching a consensus as to whether or not they are friends or something more. Fortunately, Mo Brownsey takes some of the confusion out gay-gal dating with her wonderful book.
From being single, relationships, breakups and mourning, Brownsey covers it all. Need help identifying the dreaded lesbian bed death? Not sure if it's lust or love? Considering multiple partner relationships? Mo supplies the answers along with tongue-in-cheek comedy that will keep you howling with laughter no matter where you are concerning gay-gal relationships. I admit to suffering from STD myself (Sexually Transmitted Denial). For gals like me who find themselves in the midst of redefining their sexuality, and refuse to take the whole dating thing too seriously, Mo Brownsey's book is the definitive answer for the basics of gay-gal dating. Her comedic approach to relationships, breakups, recovery and sex is an indispensable guide for those new to this lifestyle as well as gay-gals who've always know that they weren't straight but love a good laugh. Indeed, straight or lesbian, all women will find themselves in this remarkably astute book. IS IT A DATE OR JUST COFFEE earns the WordWeaving Award for Excellence.

David Busch's Sony Alpha DSLR-A350/A300/A200 Guide Review

David Busch's Sony Alpha DSLR-A350/A300/A200 Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Once again, David Busch has broken away from the pack to provide a comprehensive, yet accessible guide to Sony's entry-level DSLR-A350, A300, and A200 cameras. It's much more thorough than any of the skimpy, "pocket-sized" guides, which are themselves usually nothing more than a rehash of the manual Sony provides (and often inexplicably printed in black and white!) Instead of just repeating the lists of settings, Busch offers advice about what each setting does, and when you should use it. I really like this approach, because it helps readers learn about photography as they master the operation of their cameras.
It's certainly more useful than one of the DVD that are simply canned "demos" for those who think of themselves as "visually oriented." Do you like to learn visually? Check out this book's abundant illustrations of each control, key menu items, and pictures showing the kind of results you get when following the author's advice.
But beyond the clearly presented introduction to the Sony cameras themselves, the author takes you to the next plateau, with chapters that explain how to optimize exposure, choose lenses, and really master techniques like autofocus, slectronic flash, action photography, and close-ups.
I'm always pleased when I receive one of this author's books for review. He really seems to understand the needs of his readers well, and talks to both beginners and more advanced photographers in a friendly, convesational way. I wish all camera guidebooks were this good.

Although not a very big book, I found the information in 'When in Mexico' very accurate and very helpful. It was good to get some inside 'tips' that could save some embarrasment or hurt feelings when traveling in that great country, such as what time to arrive at someone's house for dinner, when it's not ok to haggle over prices, etc. The format of the book was kind of interesting, but it was still an easy read.

Fodor's Costa Rica 2009 (Fodor's Gold Guides) Review

Fodor's Costa Rica 2009 (Fodor's Gold Guides)
Average Reviews:

" . . . let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens." -- Genesis 1:20
For years our children, friends, neighbors, students, and acquaintances have extolled the many virtues of traveling to Costa Rica. There was only one problem: Each one described the country so differently that it was hard to imagine that they were describing the same place. Surfing around on the Internet didn't help: The sites seemed to assume that I already knew what I was looking for.
In the past, Fodor's various guides have proven to be invaluable for assessing the best ways to organize trips to places I know well. I often found better ways to travel, more interesting places to stay, new things to do, and great meals at prices I could afford. But I had never thought of Fodor's guides as a resource for a place I didn't know much about.
With that in mind, I picked up Fodor's Costa Rica 2009 to see what I could learn. Wow! Was I glad that I did!!
Although Costa Rica isn't a very big place, getting around can be time-consuming and difficult. Many nature-oriented activities such as bird and turtle watching are better at some times and places than at others. Also, there's a lot off rain in the rain forest. Arrive during the dry season and your visit can be a lot more pleasant.
Beginning with the index to learn about what I wanted to see, I quickly picked up the basic facts. With those helpful bits of information, I was able to go back to the Internet to check out the more interesting alternatives and find the lowest cost ways to explore them. From that research, I became convinced that my original idea of going in November wasn't such a good idea.
Without Fodor's I would have planned the wrong trip at the wrong time of the year. I don't know if I'll ever get to Costa Rica, but if I do it'll be a great trip thanks to this valuable guide.

College Bound: What Christian Parents Need to Know About Helping their Kids Choose a College Review

College Bound: What Christian Parents Need to Know About Helping their Kids Choose a College
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The college search is as much an art as it is a science" (p. 13).
"Your teen's foundation of faith should be a strong consideration when choosing a college. During those undergraduate years, he will learn not only what to think, but how to think. Your student will question many things during college, including his faith. And the questioning of faith is not necessarily a bad thing -- it's a normal part of development. Think of it as an unpacking of faith" (p. 19).
"Many Christian parents naively send their student to a state school because of the affordable cost, without counting the cost of that experience on her spiritual well-being. In ten years, do you want to be asking yourself, "Was the cost really worth the price?" (p. 55).
This slim book does not bash non-Christian schools, but it does send a warning message: your son or daughter will be exposed to other thoughts and beliefs. For me, that is one of the points in SENDING your kid to school. Enough said.
The interesting thing is that Thomas Shaw really has a number of good insights into the college selection process, the admissions process, funding college, and "letting go." These insights are good for all parents helping their students go to college, Christian or not. If you are non-Christian, you will probably tire of the Biblical quotes sprinkled throughout the text (they are italicized and offset, and easy to skip over). If you are Christian, Shaw leads you through instructions from the Bible that are relevant.
The college selection process is complicated! Whether you like this book or not, never depend on one source of information. Read as much as you can, and make sure you visit those potential colleges. College Bound is one step in this journey.

Parents of teenagers in mid to late high school will appreciate this resource as they wade through myriad details concerning college applications, financial aid applications and admissions procedures. Tom helps parents answer questions like:Is college the right choice for my teen?Would my teen thrive best in a secular or Christian environment? What are the differences between private, liberal arts and big state schools? How do I get involved without appearing controlling or overbearing?Written from the perspective of a Christian parent, this book places particular emphasis on the parent's role as nurturer and shepherd of their children's spiritual future. Infinite Jest: A Novel Review

Infinite Jest: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
David Foster Wallace is a genius, and he knows it. But unlike other geniuses that you might know, he never tries to make you feel dumb. He just wants you to understand the same things that he does, so occasionally you'll feel out of your depth. But he's also a gifted writer, so odds are that you *will* come out understanding him. And what he's saying is brilliant, so you'll feel like a better person for it.
Wallace has been described as ``postmodern", a word that seems to get smacked onto anything written after World War II. I don't see it. To me, postmodernism involves a few things: 1) irony, in liberal doses (e.g., DeLillo's _White Noise_); 2) a continuous awareness that we're *reading a book* and that there's an author talking to us, and that the characters are under his control (e.g., anything by Kurt Vonnegut); 3) self-reference, sometimes to the point of disorienting involution (e.g., Wallace's story ``Westward The Course Of Empire Makes Its Way" from his book _Girl With Curious Hair_ - and that story is, notably, a spoof of postmodernism). This may be an overly conservative definition of postmodernism, but the word's overapplication justifies some conservatism.
_Infinite Jest_ is not postmodern; it's just a great story with beautifully constructed characters. It is a book about a movie that is so addictive that anyone who starts watching it has no choice but to keep watching it forever - foregoing food, water, and sleep, and suffering as much pain as is necessary to keep watching. The movie itself is, to paraphrase a friend, an uber-McGuffin (I'm never sure whether I've spelled that right) - an object that never gets clearly explained, but around which the plot coheres.
The movie itself is not the main point of the book. _Infinite Jest_ is a novel about American addictions: television, drugs, sex, fame, and indeed the American need to be addicted to something. An addiction to addictions. Wallace summarizes the book's mood well when he says,
``There's something particularly sad about it, something that doesn't have very much to do with physical circumstances, or the economy, or any of the stuff that gets talked about in the news. It's more like a stomach-level sadness. I see it in myself and my friends in different ways. It manifests itself as a kind of lostness. Whether it's unique to our generation I really don't know."
(...)
The main sign of Wallace's genius - and yes, I mean that word with all it entails, content in the knowledge that it is overused but that it fits here - is that he can make us feel this gut-level sadness without even appearing to work at it. Heavy use of irony can make you feel that there's some deeper, unseen, lurking gloominess about the world, and for that reason it's the easy way out. Ditto self-reference, which after a while is dizzying and confusing. Wallace is too brilliant a writer to take any of the easy postmodern routes. He's just written a great story with an unpleasant underlying mood. It's been a long time since I've read a book of such masterful subtlety.
It has all the classic aspects of a great novel: characters whom the reader *understands*, a compelling story that edges inexorably toward an uncertain ending, a gut-level mood, and a habit of dispensing brilliant toss-offs so suddenly that the reader can't help but gasp. For instance, see the attached text file containing Wallace's future-retrospective explanation of why videophones failed.
My first inclination was that this book - weighing in at over a thousand pages, including hundreds of footnotes (some of which have their own footnotes) - needed an editor. And it may, at points. But there's very little chaff amongst the wheat: the book's heft serves at least three purposes:
1) To build characters, slowly and methodically. One of Wallace's flaws is that his characters' dialogue - particularly that of his youthful protagonist and tennis prodigy, Hal Incandenza - doesn't sound genuine. It sounds like Wallace talking through 17-year-olds, not 17-year-olds who've been transcribed. I think Wallace realizes this, which is why most of his character development comes through narration.
2) To dump out the contents of Wallace's swirling brain. He has so much to say, and he seems to want to get it all down on paper in this one book. Less profound thoughts from a less talented author might have left me screaming for an editor, but they didn't do so here.
3) To structure the book as a conversation. Reading this book, one feels as though one is talking directly with Wallace. More often than not, his sentences will contain heavy Latinate words like ``epicanthic" just a short distance from the conversational stammerings ``like" and ``and so but". Again, had a lesser writer written these words, I would have edited the book myself, filling the margins with red pen.
The book's length will discourage all but a few readers, but it handsomely rewards the patient.

When Couples Walk Together: 31 Days to a Closer Connection Review

When Couples Walk Together: 31 Days to a Closer Connection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hugh and Cindi McMenamin have served in ministry for more than 20 years, and over the course of those years have had many opportunities to observe and counsel married couples who feel they are drifting apart and can't really explain why. In WHEN COUPLES WALK TOGETHER, the McMenamins have created a very practical and helpful guide that can serve to draw couples closer together and put some romance back into their marriage.
In addition to a clearly defined Table of Contents, each chapter represents a day of the month in which that chapter is to be shared and discussed. Broken up into sections, the guide allows couples to take turns reading and to pause and reflect on the topic. For example, in the chapter for Day 4, "Praising the Positive," Cindi shares an anecdote to illustrate this step. She tells about being pulled aside by her youth pastor, who told her that Hugh was an awesome guy but was one of the moodiest people ever. Cindi was defensive and said that Hugh was a deep thinker, not an impulsive talker, and that was just what she wanted in a husband. Then she writes, "Now, after 22 years of marriage, instead of appreciating my deep thinker, I find myself, at times, thinking things like Hugh is the moodiest person I know."
There are several ways to handle a situation like this, in which one of the most endearing things about your mate during courtship is now the very thing that drives you up the wall. Not to be outdone, Hugh relates his feelings about how he had always admired Cindi's way with words and her skills as a journalist. But he adds that "after more than 20 years together, there are days when I wish she wasn't quite as verbal, especially when she finds something she thinks is wrong with me. And, she's reciting her thoughts unabridged and I'm looking for the Reader's Digest version." I'm sure that readers can come up with their own annoying characteristics that they have "discovered" in their mates.
How did Cindi and Hugh deal with this issue? They learned the importance of focusing on the positive traits in their spouse. As it says in Philippians 4:8, "Keep you minds on whatever is true, pure, right, holy, friendly, and proper. Don't ever stop thinking about what is truly worthwhile and worth of praise." In order to get past this type of issue, each must "choose" to focus on the positives and minimize the negatives when it comes to their mate.
As in each chapter, the authors offer "Taking the Next Step," which suggests ways to turn negative thoughts into positive ones by reframing. This is followed by an exercise called "Going the Extra Mile" that encourages couples to talk about what attracted them to each other in the first place.
Finally, the last section, "Going the Distance Through Prayer," encourages a joint prayer, asking God to show them how to follow the plan that He inspired through the Bible.
Whether you would like to use this book for a small group study or simply to spark up your own marriage, WHEN COUPLE WALK TOGETHER offers excellent suggestions and clearly stated Biblical principles and confirmations.

The demands of everyday life almost always pull husbands and wives in different directions. And even when they are together, there's very little opportunity to just be a couple. Work, children, and other commitments make it a constant challenge to find quality time alone.Hugh and Cindi McMenamin have put together an innovative devotional about meaningful ways that husbands and wives can draw closer together. Each reading in this 31-day book offers simple, helpful (and fun!) steps a husband and wife can take to nourish closeness and intimacy. Among the topics are
the power of a note
making a memory
extending grace
splurging on love
finding a getaway
lighten the load
flirting again
sharing your heart
Key thoughts from Scripture are interwoven into each devotion, and each ends with 'Points to Ponder Together" as well as a couple's prayer. Especially helpful are the frequent anecdotal tips from a woman's perspective (Cindi) and a man's (Hugh).

Gridiron Leadership: Winning Strategies and Breakthrough Tactics Review

Gridiron Leadership: Winning Strategies and Breakthrough Tactics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gridiron Leadership is an excellent book! In every corporate environment, success or failure boils down to two things, the quality of your plan and, more importantly, your execution of that plan or early recognition of plan change. As in a football game, you can have the best play book, with great plays on offense and great defensive schemes, but if they are continuously executed poorly by unmotivated players, you will not win. If, as a leader/coach, you fail to recognize and make adjustments to your plan in a timely fashion, you will not win. Finally, "attitude is a reflection of leadership", if your team is unwilling to follow you, it doesn't matter how good they are, your likelihood of winning is non-existent. Gridiron Leadership provides the executive reader, fundamentals through vignettes and stories that enforce the lessons learned in this book. These stories discuss sense of purpose, teamwork, trust, communication, moral integrity, giving 110%, not letting your brother down, and playing to win. Effective leaders are always learning and improving. In my opinion, this book is a must read for all aspiring leaders.

Managing and Organizations: An Introduction to Theory and Practice Review

Managing and Organizations: An Introduction to Theory and Practice

So as to respond to the exigencies of globalization, the world of managing, managers and management has substantially changed in the last two decades or so. While some say that management discourse is to be viewed from the post-modernist perspective; others argue that we are reverting back to basics of management. Market, competition, competencies, capacity building, culture, diversity, empowerment, teams, lean organizations are some of the buzz words in general management literature today. Managers' commitment in the new era is being tested not on the touchstone of loyalty to the owner or the organization, but on performance and sensitivity to the needs of the organization and other stakeholders. In the era of globalization, the general topics in the discipline of management are also changing. But not all general management textbooks have shifted their focus adequately from traditional functions to the contemporary ones. The book under review meets this demand of the subject quite well.
Some of the salient features of this interesting text are as follows: The coverage of topics is quite comprehensive and updated, including issues like organizational politics, cultures, knowledge and learning, innovation and change, managing strategy and managing globalization. Each chapter provides overview of theories involved in succinct and lucid manner including the contemporary developments in the subject concerned. The theories involved have been traced in terms of their historical development. Each chapter prescribes suggested additional readings, most of which are path-breaking works. A good bit of additional material is also available in the form of maps, images, charts, and boxes as tools for learning and examining the material. Above all, this text meets requirements of a well-written text. The reader finds the narration in a tremendous flow. The text is also supported by an instructor's manual and an interactive website that provides additional material for teachers and students, including more cases, quick quizzes, short movies from experts introducing students to main themes, as well as a free online reader of important journal articles that relate to the topics discussed.
Writing inspiring textbook is an art. Throughout the book the authors are aware of what is happening in various areas of management today. The authors rightly call it "a realist guide to management". They have also succeeded well at several places questioning the supposedly unquestionable; quite a postmodernist venture. Coherence is remarkable; rarely does the reader encounter patches of disinterest in the concepts being elaborated.

John Donne - The Major Works: including Songs and Sonnets and sermons (Oxford World's Classics) Review

John Donne - The Major Works: including Songs and Sonnets and sermons (Oxford World's Classics)
Average Reviews:

John Donne wrote some of the most beautiful, intelligent, and passionate poetry in the English language! With some poets you get 1 or 2 of these qualities: with Donne you get all 3, and so I highly recommend his poetry to all lovers of poetry and English literature. The language is archaic and at times difficult, but that's also some of its beauty and charm. What's more noteworthy but less noticed than the oldness of the language is how fresh and alive it still seems and must have seemed in centuries past! While I love Donne's poetry especially because of his intelligent and beautiful passion for God, even those without religious faith will appreciate the brilliance and glory of Donne's poetry.
If you're able to keep up with Donne's poetry, you'll discover startling phrases and juxtapositions which were frowned upon in ages past but which I find helps invigorate the modern reader. Whether your primary way of apprehending poetry is religious, intellectual, or aesthetic, Donne will be a delight to you as it does me. Donne's poetry also has a very personal association with me: when I was courting my wife and in the early years of my marriage, I would read her the poetry of Donne and George Herbert. She not only loved the poetry but loved me more for having read it to her!
This Oxford World's Classics edition is not only affordable but authoritative. It includes not only Donne's poetry but also his prose, such as his sermons and letters. Introduction, textual notes, bibliography, chronology, and explanatory notes. Along with the Norton edition, it is the most definitive collection of Donne's works, although the Norton edition has more critical apparatuses.
Highly recommended!

The Life You Imagine: Life Lessons for Achieving Your Dreams

A true inspirational and motivational book. Once I began reading, I found it difficult to put down. A true tribute to how determination, dedication, love, support and a positive attitude can help anyone achieve whatever dreams they desire. Derek Jeter's journey from a childhood dream to the steps and scarifices he took in accomplishing his goal is a life lesson for anyone, whether you're 9 or 99. An intimate look at his family, his thoughts, his fears, his struggles, his triumphs...I found myself laughing, crying and reflecting on my own life as I related his experiences to my own. This book teaches you about Derek Jeter, but mostly, it teaches you about life. A+++++
