What is the book about?
"Hurt 2.0' is about getting inside the world of today's teenagers. Chap's purpose is to share how life is different for today's high school students.
What do I think about it?
The research, stories, and candor is fantastic. This book will pop the eyes and open the minds of those who work with teens.
What got me pumped up?
The real-life-hold-nothing-back approach is wonderful . I don't have teenage kids yet but this book has given me tremendous insight into what is combating the way my wife and I want to raise our children.
What was deflating?
I thought there would be more updated material. Yes, there are a couple of new chapters as well as new stories here and there but for the most part this book is paragraph-for-paragraph of the first version.
"So, would you recommend it?"
Of course, you can't go wrong with Chap's research! But if you're expecting a whole lot more than what was included the first edition then you won't get it.

The Ten Paradoxes: The Science of Where's My Zen? Review

The Ten Paradoxes: The Science of Where's My Zen

I was impressed with Chapter 14 No Mind Extreme and it reminded me of `Your Erroneous Zones" by Dr. Dryer. This is about the person living in the moment and free of the hang-ups, prejudices, guilts, worries, and over-thinking that we all do and get stuck in. It's not easy to get out of it, but this book provides one of the first thoroughly researched methods of getting back it and devotes over 140 pages to the techniques, which are detailed in No Mind 301. If you are looking for change, this can help you become more objective and as Master Nomi says, "enjoy the play in life."

The Ten Paradoxes is a landmark program that combines a unique six-part training and educational system for achieving peak performance and enlightenment or what Master Nomi calls Total Mental Fitness®. Using the ancient power of No Mind® which has been clinically proven by top university and medical centers, it actually changes neural pathways to restructure and improve awareness, enabling you to do better and feel better in every aspect of your life. You'll attain peak performance and flow in sports, business, academics, relationships, and stress management, along with health benefits and deeper spiritual understanding. You'll be more playful and tranquil, have greater compassion and a clearer perception of reality, and become a better communicator with your colleagues and loved ones. With continued practice, you can even come to terms with death, the most feared aspect of our humanity. The Ten Paradoxes, through extensive research and case studies, leads you on a journey to the secrets of the ancient masters. First, it reveals the basic functions and mechanisms of the mind, beginning with the way we filter and interpret our perceptions, which then limits and restricts our actions and reactions. Finally, we will see how the mind defensively creates the self that we know; the ego, or personality. This is the ultimate illusion that we all need to come to grips with. And when we do, our intuition and creativity blossom, and we become fully alive and open. The practice of No Mind® will actually un-train your thinking and teach you how to achieve Total Mental Fitness® by transcending the very structure of the mind. As long as we live in a dualistic reality, we keep searching for what we think will complete us: material objects, relationships, achievements, spirituality, etc. But, The Ten Paradoxes program frees you from the limitations of these perceptual and ego defense mechanisms and allows you to control your thoughts and desires. You will respond to a new, open set of categories ultimately learning to act without trying. We therefore act in harmony with our essential nature. And we can truly be in control of our destiny, decisions, and responses, without the troublesome emotions we normally face, such as fear, worry, anxiety, prejudice, and greed. The practice of No Mind® not only brings freedom from our automatic actions, reactions, and perceptions, but the ability to make maximum use of our inner potential through realization that awareness is the only universal constantTM.

Although the edition I have is pretty old and the most recent interviews were taken in the 1970s this book is still a fantastic look at the lifes of many of the 20th centuries top boxers. Each boxers story is told in a single chapter and in their OWN words. Its brilliant reading about how these champions grew up, what led them to boxing and how they have survived. As well as the Jack Dempsey's, Jake LaMotta's many other 'lesser known' boxers are featured but their stories are just, if not more interesting. A great insight into 20th century american life from those whose lifes have often been the hardest.
Great reading!!!

Sarah Reinertsen not only has an incredible story to tell but she's also an amazing person. She had a difficult childhood both physically and emotionally and yet she never let that hold her back from following her passion. Her memoir reveals some of the intimate details in her life and also gives an inside look into "The Amazing Race" as well as what it's like to compete in the Ironman. Her narrative includes very real moments of devastation, which make the triumphs all that much more gratifying. She doesn't hold anything back--and her brutal honesty makes you feel even closer to her and root for her. In today's world, it's so refreshing to read about someone who doesn't think she's entitled but who has real strength and courage and a desire to be her best and help others. She's a real role model for women and young girls everywhere. I can't wait to see what she tackles next!

This is a wonderful book written by Bears of every football era. I've read it many times over and will continue to do so. If you like the Chicago Bears, you will enjoy this book. I can't recommend it high enough. You hear from lots of the guys you'd expect, McMahon, Sayers, Ditka, Butkus, etc., but I also really enjoyed the players who were there in the Bears golden days of the 1940's, guys my dad told me about. And, Doug Buffone's recollection of the day Lions wide receiver Chuck Hughes collapsed on the field and died shortly thereafter is haunting and chilling.
If I could, I'd give the book 6 stars!

Water's Edge: Women Who Push the Limits in Rowing, Kayaking and Canoeing (Adventura Books) Review

Water's Edge: Women Who Push the Limits in Rowing, Kayaking and Canoeing (Adventura Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Books about rowing are rare enough. Books about women rowing or paddling are even rarer. Along with "The Red Rose Crew," "Water's Edge" is a lovely addition to this tiny category. In an unusual and delightful "double funnel" structure, the book begins with the most structured form of rowing, crew, then narrows to individual sports such as racing singles and single kayaking and canoeing, and then widens again to double canoeing and kayaking and finally ends with the "Back River Seven," a group of seven women who canoed one of the most remote rivers in North America, the Back River in the Canadian Arctic. Interestingly, a second layer of structure governs the book, moving from the most controlled settings, regattas, to the wildest, represented by two chapers, one on the Back River Seven and another on Valerie Fons who, with her husband, paddled over 21,000 miles, almost entirely by river, from Canada's Northwest Territories to Cape Horn, at the southern tip of South America.
If it seems I'm overly stressing the structure of the book, it's because it's part of what makes the book so rewarding and fulfilling to read. It covers a wide range of methods of moving boats by hand, and the structure gives the book a lovely cohesiveness and unity. The stories of the women themselves, of course, are stirring and inspiring. In most cases, these are women who have had to fight for recognition in their sports or, in the case of Ernestine Bayer (gnerally acknowledged as the matriarch of U.S. women's rowing) to have a sport at all.
"Water's Edge" really should be read in concert with "The Red Rose Crew." As it happens, I read "The Red Rose Crew" first, and it feels as if that's the proper order. In any case, they make excellent companions. They both describe the efforts of women to reach the heights of excellence in their sports and, along the way, bring to vivid life feats of courage, endurance, and sheer, gut-wrenching tenacity at which we can only marvel. One of the women, for example, explains that she doesn't really like racing because she doesn't like the taste of blood in her mouth afterwards. But perhaps the most epigrammatic quote of all is Valerie Fons's description of what she learned on her epic pole-to-pole canoe trip: "Fear is a door, not a wall. Once you choose courage, you begin practicing it. Then it's all the easier to choose courage again. Overcoming fear is the thing I know about. Some songs you can sing because that's where your voice fits."

Neutral Buoyancy: Adventures in a Liquid World Review

Neutral Buoyancy: Adventures in a Liquid World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's a little hard to imagine that any thinking person who is a diver, or maybe wants to be a diver, would not enjoy and be informed by this book.
I know I learned lot. There is a lot of history of diving, combined with modern diving anecdotes. I would say the history part I found most interesting and informative was the discussion about the bends. Of course all divers today take this knowledge for granted, but if you stop and think about it, the connection between working in a tunnel, for example, and pain in the joints, and sometimes painful death, is not obvious. The author does a good job of telling this medical detective story.
His visit to volcano-ravaged Rabaul is also particularly interesting, and I would have thought the topic of free-diving was of no interest to me, but it turned out his treatment of this subject held my attention completely.
I first got certified to dive in 1967 when PADI and NAUI were both infants. I recently got re-certified, and now dive actively in the Philippines. Diving is a great sport, and this book is a useful and delightful addition to the literature on the subject. I will almost certainly re-read this one.

Pinheads and Patriots: Where You Stand in the Age of Obama
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an actual review from someone who has read the entire book. Seems a bit rare here.
I liked Bold Fresh, it read like O'Reilly talking but included some great stories and insight into Bill. Sadly Pinheads and Patriots is a pretty lazy effort by Bill, especially if you watch his nightly show.
For me the Pinheads and Patriots theme became old in a hurry. While it's unique for a while, it reminds me of the Saturday Night Live skits that are turned into movies. Pinheads and Patriots is a unique bit that Bill does at the end of his show for a few minutes. In small doses it is interesting. As a book, it's repetitive and frankly I wasn't that interested in Bill looking at historical figures as Pinhead or Patriots.
Obviously Obama gets a lot of coverage in the book. Bill is fair with him to a point. Bill lost me in spending a large chapter of the book transcribing his 30 minute interview with Obama in 2008 and then doing a follow-up on what Obama said. Bill covered this interview to death on his show (ditto for Barney Frank). You can take any politician and two years later analyze an interview they did finding all kinds of issues. I am not an Obama fan, but this was lazy by Bill. Put a fresh interview in the book, then you have something.
Early in the book Bill thanks his fans and talks about how he like to give back to them. His reward for me was charging more for the Kindle version than the hardcover. For that Bill you are a Pinhead. (Sorry, I had to)

Sending the National Guard to the Arizona border . . . Cutting back-room deals to pass health-care reform . . . Conducting troop surges in Iraq and Afghanistan . . . Considering trying known terrorists in civilian court . . . Which of these moves have been pinheaded and which have been patriotic?

While the changes that took place in America during President Obama's first eighteen months in office are dizzying to even think about, their real-life impact on the average American is a helluva lot stronger than that. Blood pressures have soared and tempers have reached the boiling point over the shifts in health care, immigration, national security, energy, and the environment-and then there's the economy. The president and his administration have gotten folks riled. But some greedy Wall Streeters, a partisan Congress, and the media have also widened the national divide. Through it all, Bill O'Reilly can be counted on to cut through the rhetoric and tell you what's good and what's bad for you.

O'Reilly sorts it all out with his trademark mix of humor and bluster in his

The World According to Garp (Modern Library) Review

The World According to Garp (Modern Library)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first read THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP in 1982, the year the movie adaptation came out. I was a great fan of Robin Williams (MORK & MINDY still being on television at the time), and because I was far too young to view the film, I decided to read its source novel. Actually, I did an oral report on it, much to the chagrin of my 6th grade teacher. It's hard to do an oral report when the rest of the class is awestruck at the use of the word 'bastard'. I did very well, but the teacher did recommend that I stick to less challenging works, considering my age. Thankfully, I did not listen.
In the many times I have reread GARP since, I have never failed to be struck dumb by the sheer elegance and beauty, not to mention brutality, of John Irving's novel. While Irving's writing have too often been described as 'Dickensian', it is truly an accurate summation. Irving presents a family saga rife with bizarre yet realistic characters, all swirling around what very well may the finest character put to paper in the 20th century, T.S. Garp.
Garp is the bastard son (there's that word again) of Jenny Fields, a sometimes nurse and headmistress, who doesn't believe in anyone but herself, and her son. As Garp matures, finding success as an author, Jenny inadvertently eclipses his fame with her own autobiography, which catapults her to the forefront of the feminist movement.
I won't say more about the plot, because nothing else would suffice. To try and describe it any further might inadvertently gloss over the innumerable circumstances that make up Garp's life. Already, many single scenes come flooding back to memory: Garp, as a child, stranded precariously on the roof of a dormitory, trying to find a pigeon; Garp as a teen, experiencing his first sexual encounter, as well as a more fierce encounter with a large black dog named Bonkers; Garp (in arguably the most haunting moment) turning off his car's engine and quietly gliding up his driveway in the dark, as his son whispers, "It's like a dream!"
Irving's other characters run the gamut, from odorific professors to brain-dead war heroes. There's Roberta Muldoon, a former linebacker-turned-transexual; Ellen James, the tragic and unwanting figurehead of a truly weird cult; and Poo, the sister of one of Garp's first girlfriends. Irving weaves his characters and situations together in a breathtaking dance. And despite the dance's immense complexity, he never once loses his step.
Irving has also become famous (justifiably so) for a story Garp pens within the novel, THE PENSION GRILLPARZER. While this story is terrific, it has overshadowed the rest of Garp's work found within the pages of the novel. Irving performs a neat trick, in that Garp's style of writing, while similar to Irving's, is not exactly the same. Irving writes from Garp's viewpoint, ensuring that Garp has a voice of his own. While GRILLPARZER is famous, an excerpt from one of Garp's later novels is equally memorable. In the story, a young housewife is raped, while a police officer tracks the rapist down. While it feels like an Irving novel, it also doesn't; it is far nastier and more grotesque than anything else Irving has written. It is not Irving's story, it is Garp's, providing a telling glimpse into Garp's anguished soul.
GARP is a tragedy, with funny parts. It is a comedy, with heart-wrenching moments. It is riotously funny, and crushingly moving. It is a story of writers, and insanity, and adultry, and terminal cases. Like the best novels, it displays the entire life of an individual the reader would not otherwise get to know. It presents you with places you want to see, and people you wouldn't mind sharing a beer with. It is Irving's best work, and a landmark in American literature.

Harvard Boys: A Father and Son's Adventures Playing Minor League Baseball

First off, I would like to say I enjoyed this book tremendously. As a former ballplayer myself, I was a little skeptical about how minor league baseball was going to be portrayed. I was afraid this book was going to be a cheap rip-off of the uber-successful movie Bull Durham. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that as I was reading, I felt as though I was living vicariously through John. It was like I was reliving the struggles and joys of having good and bad days at the plate. I really liked the commentaries comparing and contrasting the minor leagues from yesteryear to today. I thought that was a very original touch. Overall, Harvard Boys is an easy, very enjoyable read for everyone who loves the game of baseball and wants to get a sense of what minor league baseball is all about.

Harvard has a reputation for turning out notable lawyers, doctors, politicians, and scientists—but not exactly for producing professional ballplayers. However, in the mid-1970s Rick Wolff transferred from this major leaguer of academia to baseball's minors, playing for the Detroit Tigers organization. Thirty years later, his son followed in his footsteps: Harvard diploma in hand, he now plays for a minor league affiliate of the New York Mets. Baseball fans will enjoy the duo's parallel adventures in the little-known world of boarding houses, horrible meals, long bus rides, and colorful coaches that make minor league baseball so popular and fascinating.

I wrote my senior thesis on this book at UC Berkeley. The complexities of multiculturalism, borders and the constant movement of today are on display here. It also reminded me of the movie "Crash" but with more depth to the cast of characters. One line from the book sticks with me and appears in my thoughts from time to time: "...progress and other things in which they foolishly believed..." This concept of the "myth of progress" is a central theme of this novel, as it demonstrates how even though we're making strides in so many ways (technology, connecting across borders, knowledge/information), we're digressing in other ways (morals, human contact, wisdom). Although I loathed it while trying to articulate a thesis from it, I now look back with fondness and upon rereading it, have come to appreciate its depth.

This fiercely satirical, semifantastical novel ... features an Asian-American television news executive, Emi, and a Latino newspaper reporter, Gabriel, who are so focused on chasing stories they almost don't notice that the world is falling apart all around them. Where To Ski and Snowboard Worldwide: The Reuters Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Trust me on this one folks. If you have gotten this far, pulled up this ski guide and are reading this review, just save your time and order the book immediately. While on sabbatical from a corporate job last winter I skied in Europe at 28 resorts over 4 months and used this guide exclusively. It was simply invaluable for the complex decision making required when laying out a ski trip especially if you have flexibility in choosing resorts. The layout and design of the book is first rate and gives 1 to 5 star ratings by resort for snow, size, terrain (expert, intermediate, beginner), food, liftlines, scenery, resort charm and off slope activities. The uncannily accurate judgement of the editors on these many points really clinches the value of this book. (Why are you still reading?) The book is about 70% Europe, 20% USA, and 10% rest of the world. There is an enlightening write-up on Europe vs. US ski experience differences. There is a synopsis of the skiing peculiarities of each country. There are useful high level road maps showing the geographical location of each resort. In the front section of the book there is an excellent matrix synthesis of the top 100 or so resorts for a high level view of where you might want to go. There are just enough small but clear trail maps to be useful but not cluttered. There are some accomodation listings with punchy accurate quotes from recent visitors. Because of the high efficient layout and design, all this info is easily accessible and clear.
The book is missing pricing info which is a bit of a gap but everything else is done so well its hardly a complaint. There are some real bargains to be had, especially in Italy and Austria, and less so in Switzerland and France. ... The pricing gap can be resolved by calling the local tourism boards for the resort you are interested in or accessing the local websites. Most of the tourism contact info is in the book also.
The guide is even aesthetically pleasing....very much so.....with nicely placed original small high end (whew!)photographs from some of the resorts giving a pleasant intuitive feel for the area you might be choosing. If you are planning a ski trip in N. America or Europe, buy this guide. Highly Recommended

I own 6 of the most popular books on avalanche safety; this is by far the best. The core information needed to assess avalanche risk is given in some detail but the explanations are presented in "everyday" terms and are quite easy to understand. None-the-less,Tremper never talks down to his readers and the full level of complexity inherent in the subject matter is maintained. This is simply a very well written book by an author who appearantly is able to write well naturally. He would probably do very well writing about any subject.

Winter recreation in the backcountry has increased steadily over the years and so has the number of deaths and injuries caused by avalanches. As search and rescue teams are increasingly strapped for funding, self-education has become a larger necessity for snow-sport enthusiasts. The new edition of Bruce Tremper's seminal book is organized according to the structure of American Avalanche Association classes and all chapters have been updated and reviewed by peer experts.
