Bad Sports: How Owners Are Ruining the Games We Love

If you are a sports fan, or a progressive, you can't let this book get by you. I was truly caught flat-footed by Zirin's frozen ropes of insight into why I haven't been as inspired by the games I grew up loving so much--and by his ideas about what it will take to reclaim the game from profit driven owners. As a resident of Seattle, I was impressed how well Zirin tackled the saga of Clay Bennett and his sell out of our city by shipping of our beloved Sonics to Oklahoma. But this book is much more than an expose of rapacious sports team moguls. It is sociological study of sports and its fans that uncovers previously obscured ideas about why people marvel and partake in play. It is a study of urban planning in America and the role of the sports teams and stadiums in the modern metropolis. Moreover, it is a playbook for fans and social activists to make our cities and our teams inspiring once again.

Heroines of Sport: The Politics of Difference and Identity

There are surprisingly few books on women (and queer people) in sport, and of the few I found, this was the one most appropriate for introducing the topic to undergraduate students who are not specifically studying sports sociology. I used it as background reading for a lecture on sports and music in a queer music survey course, and it was just what I needed. The arguments generally are not very novel, and anyone with a background in women's studies or queer studies would not find much very new here, but it is a good resource for introducing many of these standard issues to non-specialist undergrad students, and it is unique in its coverage on women and sport. Overall, I'm glad to have it on my shelf, and have used it several times.

Heroines of Sport looks closely at different groups of women whose stories have been excluded from previous accounts of women's sports and female heroism. It focuses on five specific groups of women from different places in the world South African women; Muslim women from the Middle East; Aboriginal women from Australia and Canada; and lesbian and disabled women from different countries worldwide. It also asks searching questions about colonialism and neo-colonialism in the women's international sport movement.The particular groups of women featured in the book reflect the need to look at specific categories of difference relating to class, culture, disability, ethnicity, race, religion and sexual orientation. In her account, Jennifer Hargreaves reveals how the participation of women in sport across the world is tied to their sense of difference and identity. Based on original research each chapter includes material which relates to significant political and cultural developments.Heroines of Sport will be invaluable reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of sport sociology, and will also be relevant for students working in women's studies and other specialized fields, such as developments development studies or the politics of Aboriginality, disability, Islam, race and sexuality.

Start and Run a Money-Making Bar Review

Just don't look at the cover (the cheeziest cover I think I've ever seen on a book; I literally had to tear mine off to avoid laughing or having any of its "uncoolness" rub off on me).
Anyway, I own a pretty sucessful bar in Santa Barbara California (Indochine on State Street) and bought this book when I was reading up in anticipation of starting a new restaurant (w/ a bar in it).
While the book assumes the reader knows little or nothing about the business, it has a wealth of information for readers of all levels of experience. I was apprised/reminded of numerous aspects of the biz that caused me to tweak my own bar (to largely sucessful result). Quite simply, this book made/saved me significant money.
I highly recommend.

If you're looking for an architectural book that includes drawings such as floor plans, sections and elevations then you're in the right place.
This book offers a lot of pictures for 18 different stadiums including the Wembley Stadium in London.. i would have given it five stars but unfortunately most of the drawings are too small to be read or understood professionally.. i think they should have added a CD just like most architectural books now a days with full size images to help you view it in details.

Leveling the Playing Field: How the Law Can Make Sports Better for Fans Review

Leveling the Playing Field: How the Law Can Make Sports Better for Fans
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many of the major issues of modern professional sports revolve around issues of the law. Harvard's Henry J. Friendly professor of law Paul C. Weiler believes this firmly and "Leveling the Playing Field" is his attempt to explore this subject. Much of this terrain has been pursued in other works, but Weiler's perspective is interesting. Weiler takes the reader through the looking glass world of the sports business, exploring the nature of free agency, the various revenue streams of the major sports franchises, the long history of the shakedown for new sports complexes paid for with public money, the problems of steroids and other methods of cheating, and television and other revenues generated through sports activities. It is a familiar story, and Weiler tells it relatively well. His approach is balanced and his tone is evenhanded, even when the subject does not deserve it.
His solution to the problems of Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, and the National Hockey League boil down to one piece of national legislation. "The only way to avoid a regular replay of the experience of the 1990s is to have Congress pass a law that bars redistribution of middle-American taxpayer dollars into the pockets of wealthy Americans like George Steinbrenner." He adds, "I hope my readers now understand that as fans we would be better off if our favorite sports had the combination of a salary tax and a stadium cap" (p. 345). That might help, although I am opposed to any restraint on the ability of players to receive whatever income they are able to negotiate for their services since they are fundamentally the stars of the show, but I only wish it were that simple! I very much question all the problems of the sports business could be cured in this way, and I must add that the devil would be in the details of any such congressional action and its ramifications might be strikingly different from what was intended. Witness the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act and how it simply changed the rules of the game; it did not appreciably alter the game itself. Additionally, the ability to pass legislation of this type in early twenty-first century America appears virtually nil.
While I found this book quite interesting and worthy of consideration, I was annoyed by the relative lack of academic rigor in the discussion. At no point, for instance, did Weiler offer detailed thoughts on the nature of the legislation that he believes is necessary. Additionally, the book is completely without scholarly apparatus, not even a selected bibliography, and I find this unacceptable in a serious work.

When we first heard about this book, some of the guys in the shop were skeptical about how it would turn out. We have all read articles and stories about the work we do and wondered how the writers got it so wrong. Embellishments, mis-quotes, and cheesy bravado injected into stories about Coast Guard swimmers have often left us cold to the idea of a book about the job. But Laguardia-Kotite got it right.....way right.
Her book is meticulously researched, well-organized, and tells the story of Coast Guard rescues without overstepping the facts in exchange for reactions. She simply put to paper the heart of the program through stories of actual men and women engaged in the unique job of aviation rescue crewmembers. Also refreshing was the way she (better than anyone I have ever read) tells the story of the rescue swimmer as part of a team, giving all due credit to the pilots and flight mechanics that make rescue at sea possible.

So Others May Live is the untold story of the U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer. In startlingly clear and exceptional writing, it tells twelve heroic stories of the greatest maritime rescues attempted since the program was started in 1985. These feats, told through the eyes of the hero, reveal an understanding of how and why the rescuer, with flight crew assistance, risks his or her own life to reach out to save a stranger. The book covers diverse environments: oceans, hurricanes, oil rigs, caves, sinking vessels, floods, and even Niagara Falls. It is truly a can't-put-it-down collection.

Very few books have made an impact on me as much as this obscure but genuine gem. I've owned it for years and still check it out often. As a lifelong sports maven- and as a person with a lifelong neurological condition- I have to limit my exposure to sports on TV or live. That ended my lifelong dream of being a sports columnist. Thank God for Kevin Quirk, who was the first guy- and, to this day, the only guy- to identify this condition.
With humor and warmth, Kevin not only tells you how he quit the business cold turkey but how he talked to sports junkies all over the country for their stories. I live in Boston, arguably the most intense sports city of all, and I feel that this book was written for me. Like Kevin, I have dealt with sports junkiedom all my life, not always successfully. He's still there to help.
If you, too, have a sporting obsession and want to put it in the proper perspective, go dig this book up right now. You, too, can deal with it. Again- thank God for Kevin Quirk!

I am the father of an 18 year old daughter with DS and am physician in chief of Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. GIFTS is one of the most inspiring books I have read. And I am not noted for being a warm, fuzzing, sensitive guy; in fact, recently my wife said that I scored quite low on the "sensitivity scale." I have given copies of GIFTS to about 50 new parents of babies with DS at our IDSF (Indiana Down Syndrome) and DADS (Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome) functions and when babies with DS have been admitted to Riley Hospital, usually for open heart surgery. The response from these parents has been one of the most amazing things I have observed. One mother told me that this book is exactly what she needed when she was having such emotional difficulties shortly after the birth of their new baby. I bought another 100 copies of GIFTS and will give a copy to any parent of a baby with DS or who is pregnant with a baby with DS. Rich Schreiner, Indianapolis IN

Some are parenting within a traditional family structure; some are not. Some never considered terminating their pregnancy; some struggled with the decision. Some were calm at the time of diagnosis; some were traumatized. Some write about their pregnancy and the months after giving birth; some reflect on years of experience with their child. Their diverse experiences point to a common truth: The life of a child with Down syndrome is something to celebrate. These women have something to say--not just to other mothers but to all of us.

A chapter "Ask the Experts" includes tips from others experienced players and recognized names in the field. The All-Pro Diet: Lose Fat, Build Muscle, and Live Like a Champion Review

The All-Pro Diet: Lose Fat, Build Muscle, and Live Like a Champion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tony Gonzalez, 80% Vegan NFL Player
All Pro Tony Gonzolez and the KC Chief's Nutritionist, Mitzi Dulan collaborated on The All-Pro Diet: Lose Fat, Build Muscle, and Live Like a Champion. For years, Gonzalez ate red meat, pizza, fast food, "whatever was plentiful and convenient." Concerned about his health, Gonzolez changed his diet. The book describes his experiments in creating his new life style, and describes how it improved his already sterling record in the NFL.
His diet emphasizes vegetables and grains, and limits animal protein to omega-3 rich fish, grass-fed chicken and meat, omega-3 enriched eggs, and some low-fat dairy. The authors also recommend a number of plant-based protein supplements.
As a successful adopter of the South Beach life style (loss of 40 pounds and greatly improved blood levels over the past six months), I found the book a useful checklist of healthy foods and a source of new suggestions for improving an already good thing. I've discovered that regularly reading books on nutrition keeps my interest in healthy eating alive, and very importantly helps maintain my weight.
A few of the useful ideas I found in Gonzales's book:
The Top 10 Best Foods (in no particular order); my addenda in brackets:
1. Blueberries [and blackberries]
2. Broccoli [and broccoli sprouts]
3. Legumes [and Beano!]
4. Oats [steel cut oatmeal and/or oat bran]
5. Oranges
6. Spinach [kale and especially Swiss chard]
7. Sweet potatoes
8. Tomatoes
9. Walnuts
10. Wild salmon [and lower on the food chain with less mercury, sardines]
[I would replace oranges with chia seeds on this list, a wonderfully healthy food; Chia: Rediscovering a Forgotten Crop of the Aztecs is a useful introduction to this nutritious food. The Cleveland Clinic publishes a similar list of the 40 "Best" foods for heart health.]
All-Pro Snack Ideas
One whole wheat pita with two tablespoons of hummus
1'4 cup walnuts or almonds
Ten baby carrots [or several celery stalks] with three tablespoons of hummus
1'3 cup guacamole with 12 multi-grain or sweet potato tortilla chips
For folks who don't want to make their own snacks, Gonzales recommends several commercial snacks, including:
Raw Revolution
LÄRABAR
CLIF Nectar
YouBar
Gnu Bar
PURE Bar
Prana Bar
Zing Bar
A couple of cautions: energy bars change their ingredients from time to time; it pays to learn how to read the ingredient list on the energy bar on offer and avoid those bars with high levels of simple sugar which will quickly raise your blood sugar levels and make you hungry in a hour or so. And, as a South Beach devotee, I've been shocked at the list of ingredients on the Kraft South Beach energy bars - they are high in fiber but contain a great deal of sugar - none of them are really "permitted" according to the principles laid out in Dr. Agaston's books.
Gonzales is a believer in smoothies, and one of his favorites is a cup of hemp milk with 3'4 of a frozen banana. A fancier example is called Mizi's Berrylicious Smoothie:
1 cup hemp milk or organic 1% cow's milk
1 cup frozen mixed berries
1 scoop protein powder (hemp or whey)
1 large handful fresh baby spinach
Blend well and enjoy!
Per 16 Ounce Serving: 282 calories, 29 g protein, 41 g carbohydrates, 3 g fat
Gonzales credits Dr. T Colin Campbell and his The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health with inspiring his successful change in his diet. The "China Study" is dense and filled with facts, but a very useful read if you want to understand the science underlying the importance of eating vegan: "people who eat mostly plants have fewer deadly diseases than those who eat animals." "The Wall Street Journal" and the excellent Healthy Happy Long Life blog written by a medical librarian [links in the first comment] provide a tremendous amount of additional information.
This book won't make you one of the highest paid players in the NFL, of course, but anyone who has successfully lost weight knows that keeping that weight off is a major challenge. This is an excellent resource for helping one both lose weight and more importantly keeping it off.
Robert C; Ross 2009

A perennial Pro-Bowler, NFL tight end Tony Gonzalez has been an unstoppable force for all of his 12 years in the NFL. But for a long time, he ate like an average American: red meat, pizza, fast food, whatever was plentiful and convenient. Concerned about his long-term, post-career health, Tony decided to change his diet. With the help of Mitzi Dulan, nutritionist for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals, Tony embarked on a revolutionary new clean-eating and exercise regimen that changed his life, elevated his physical and mental performance, and resulted in dramatic, measurable improvements on and off the field. Crossing Boundaries: An International Anthology of Women's Experiences in Sport Review

Crossing Boundaries: An International Anthology of Women's Experiences in Sport
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The jacket description of this remarkable collection is exactly on target, "the first anthology of its kind, international in scope, cross-cultural in context, and uniquely female in content." While the subject is women in sport and all the contributiors women, the book is as much for men as for women. One group in particular who would be well served by the experience and insight shared in this book is fathers of daughters increasingly involved in sports and play at practically every age.Women in sports are here to stay and the numbers will grow in spite of the popularity of the male "monster sports," football, baseball, and basketball which, as forms of entertainment and business, increasingly exhibit the shadow side of sport formerly monopolized by professional wrestling. Women in sport is a different story, a story of grace and beauty, courage and honor, disappointment and hope, pretty much what William Faulkner called the old verities which explains perhaps why the subject has attracted some of the best writers and poets of our time, represented here in abundance, Diane Ackerman, Margaret Atwood, Maxine Kumin, Denise Levertov, Beryl Markham, Carson McCullers, Joyce Carol Oates, Sharon Olds, Marge Piercy, Sylvia Plath, Adrienne Rich, May Sarton, Anne Sexton, Jean Rhys, among others. One could look a long time to find a book of any kind on any subject with as many all-star contributors. The boundaries crossed in this book are cultural and national but more importantly the main boundary crossed is that of our misperceptions of women in the world of sport. Like all good writing, this book makes us see, that is, makes us more conscious, in this case more conscious of the sense of joy and discovery that sport can still bring.

Crossing Boundaries: An Anthology of Women's Experiences in Sport will help you discover, understand, and appreciate the depth and complexity of the female experience in sport. This is a journey to the center of feminine identity, a survey of past and present voices that lead you into the minds, hearts, and souls of women in sport. The largest literary compilation of writings on and by women in sports, Crossing Boundaries serves as a chronology of attitudes and a catalog of experiences. International in scope, some of these pieces have been translated into English for the first time, thus expanding the sports canon.

All genres are represented-poems, short stories, prose memoirs, journalistic accounts, plays, and novels-to illustrate the broad reach of the literature written by women from a variety of historical and cultural perspectives. This is the female story in and out of sport, one told by outsiders, insiders, spectators, recreational athletes, and transnational sports heroes.

Crossing Boundaries starts with an important historical perspective dating back to Cynisca, the first female victor in the ancient Olympic Games. The book goes on to examine themes which have long been included in women's writings yet have been long overlooked by both feminists and literary critics. These themes include:-the significance and centrality of the body;

-the impact of exclusion and the female reaction to it;

-the role of the female spectator as an outsider;

-the female identification, connection, and ultimate merger with nature;

-the connections women make with others in and through sport;

-the athlete's identity; and

-the metaphorical uses of sport.Because women had for so long been excluded from official sports, relegated for centuries to the role of passive spectator, you will find literature about play, dance, movement, games, and exercise-activities often considered ancillary to and preparatory for the more important activity of sport. Similarly, since the editors extended their search to other countries to expand the limits of the contemporary Western perceptions of sport, you can widen your understanding of the female sporting experience.

The young women who took advantage of the passing of Title IX by the NCAA in 1972 to take part in high school and college sports have now become mothers, and their daughters are following in their footsteps. A new atmosphere of acceptance and encouragement for female athletes of all ages means more and more women are experiencing the joy of sports participation. This book connects generations of women and girls with a vivid, compelling sporting heritage.

This book talks about not only the sports fanatics themselves, but the effect that sports can have on a person as well as that person's relationship. This book doesnt JUST hit on a spouse or significant other in relationships...but their friends, family, and co-workers as well. It even talks about how some people can become ADDICTED to sports, and how this effects those around them. Dont get me wrong, the sports fanatic is not a "bad guy" but is many times misunderstood for his "LOVE AND PASSION FOR HIS TEAM." Craig hits on this perfectly, and explains why some fans act as crazy as they do! That's why they are called FANATICS! This book is great for both the sports fan, BUT ALSO FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT SPORTS FANS! It's helped my fiance' understand immensely why people become such fanatics, and how the HISTORY of their teams....winning and losing big games and championships...and how this has a lot to do with the "sports fanatic behavior." She has now become a Laker and NY Giants fan with me, and watches EVERY GAME since reading this book, and we have fun doing it! This book outlines these items/issues perfectly and is a MUST READ!!! This is Craig Bender's first book, and I am looking forward to seeing many, many more. I have read many sports books, and this one tops them all! I highly recommend you get yourself a copy TODAY!
